Tree lights- how many?!

This year is our second Christmas in our new house, and we've had to get a bigger tree due to the high ceilings dwarfing our old one last year!

So for those with a 9ft tree- how many lights do you have on yours? Google is telling me anything from 1000 to 3000

@TheHappiestChristmasTree hint: test the lights OFF the tree before just in case. Of course if your lights are LED it won't matter as much as if they are traditional bulb types (yes we still have them)

mondaytosunday · 13/11/2022 12:13

I agree with pp about 2000.

@ChickinMarango

Where are your star lamps from please?

2023istheyear · 13/11/2022 12:15

100 lights on a 6 foot tree won't give you any depth and that is the point of lights for me, when lights are wrapped around each branch it means that all of the tree is lit up and it makes it much more beautiful. A few lights on the peripheral is nice and will be cheering to see, but lights that change depending on which angle your looking at, that you put decorations next to and the lights give them more sparkle.... It really is lovely. It is more expensive for the initial purchase but LEDs are cheap to run and if you take care of them they run for years.

@kittensinthekitchen they’re from ikea years ago. They still do variations of them every year. 😁

Last year it probably took nearly two hours to just put the tree up & lights on, but that was because it was a new tree & lights and I put on and took off the lights about three times as they kept coming up too short. The decorations probably take about an hour.
This year the lights will probably take an hour as they will be new again, so just working out how much for each layer.
@AppleandSpice I wish I could do the same, but just don't have the space. I look forward to hearing how well it works for you this year🎄

I’ll be sure to let you know!
Am hoping it’ll be Ok but my tree is in 3 parts and am not sure how well it’ll hold together with the shrink wrap, as we had to take the stand off to lay it on the shelf.
Knowing my luck it’ll all go tits up and will take me twice as long to sort it out!

IME the main reasons people are unhappy with the appearance of their (artificial ) tree are

  1. they didn’t take enough time to fluff it properly
  2. they put all the lights and decorations on the end of the branches so the tree doesn’t have enough depth.

In my not very humble opinion, it looks much better If you put tiny lights towards the middle of the tree trunk and larger ones eg clusters / candles / ball lights on the middle of the branches.

Then hang most of your decorations on the smaller side shoots off each branch and fewer on the ends.

This happens naturally with a real tree because the branches are more spaced out up and down the trunk so you can see through them. And it’s impossible to hang baubles right on the end of the branch tips because they are too soft.

I have a lot of tree decorating opinions, don’t get me started …….. 😁

I need to know more about tree decorating?! Light depth?! Wrapping around the branches?! Please tell me more!! Photos if possible.

Swampthing55 · 27/11/2022 16:40

We have about 6000 three sets of 2000 and then other sets of differing tapes reindeers candles etc. It takes so long getting them on but looks amazing

GrumpyPanda · 27/11/2022 16:45

Around 30 or so but that's actual candles 😁

For obvious reasons they need careful spacing especially with regard to what's above them.

J0CASTA · 27/11/2022 19:41

@TheHappiestChristmasTree oh thats lovely, excellent tree 🌲 I love all your felt / handcrafted decorations , esp the polar bear heart and the Christmas jumper one.

crazeecatladee · 30/11/2022 11:39

Lovely tree. We've just finished ours (always aim to get it done by the end of November as we can enjoy it for longer. The month goes so quickly!) In our yoof we travelled a lot more and where ever we went it was my mission to buy a tree dec or two (or more.....) So putting up our tree is a magical trip around the world. I will try to add a photo if possible (technophobe!)

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 30/11/2022 11:42

I have 3500 cluster lights on my 6 foot tree. I would probably do about 6000 on a nine foot tree as they are so wide.
