Tree lights- how many?!

This year is our second Christmas in our new house, and we've had to get a bigger tree due to the high ceilings dwarfing our old one last year!

So for those with a 9ft tree- how many lights do you have on yours? Google is telling me anything from 1000 to 3000

That's lovely and sparkly @ChickinMarango 🥰

We have 1000 for our main tree, but we can only buy a 6ft one (low ceilings).

For those of you with 1000 or 2000 lights, are they all on one circuit? Where do you buy them from?

@BastardtheCat UK Christmas World is good for lights. I bought some one Sunday recently; they were picked that day, shipped an hour later and delivered on Monday. I was very pleased!

@Frazzled2207 That's not remotely enough, you'll be disappointed with only 120 as it won't decorate more than a sixth of your tree.

Frazzled2207 · 11/11/2022 19:29

@TheNoodlesIncident
I don’t necessarily agree as they are quite spread out on the “rope” and not tiny.
but point taken.

So a wide variation of answers! I think I'll try 2000 and then I can always add more if need be. Thanks everyone. Thinking I'll have to get the tree up soon to test the lights Grin

Well it’d be pointless to put it them away only to drag it all back out in a few weeks so may as well just get it up now! 😀

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 12/11/2022 08:54

I'd want 3000 on that but I love a lot of lights

longtompot · 12/11/2022 13:47

I have just bought these with an extra 15% off and free delivery. The lit length is double what I currently have now so I may not need to have the big light on at all this Christmas 😉 I don't know if they are any good but they seem as ok as the previous ones I bought for the same price but for only 600 lights

We have 10,000 lights on our 6 foot tree!

I wrap them around every branch rather than just spiralled around the tree and it looks so good 😍

SeasonsHeatings · 12/11/2022 14:28

1000 not 10,000. That would be seen from space 🤣

Haha! You deffo wouldn't need your big light on. Or any lights for that matter!

I start at the trunk and weave the string of lights up and down the branches until I reach the tip, and then weave again back towards the trunk. I then move across to the next branch and do the same. I do this all the way up the tree until it's the single stem branches nearer the top where I go round and round, pushing them into the foliage until I reach the top. I make sure there are some there so when my fairy is on the top her skirt is all lit up

@SeasonsHeatings
I managed to get 2,500 lights on a five foot tree!
100 per foot - bah humbug!

Margo34 · 12/11/2022 15:47

You can never have too many lights on a Christmas tree, but you can definitely have not enough.

Get more than you think! 100 per foot of tree as a minimum 😊

Well done OP. Photo?

I’ve got 2000 cluster lights on a 7.5ft tree. It looks nice, but I think 3000 would be better 😆

had this conversation the other day. I naively thought box of 120 lights would be enough for a 6 ft (real) tree. I don't want to be absolutely dazzled though. AIBU?

I have approx 100 on a 5 ft tree and don't feel hard done by.

BastardtheCat · 13/11/2022 07:31

@longtompot how long does it take you to decorate your tree?

That’s the way I did my lights last year and they looked so much better, took forever to do but really worth the effort. Didn’t fancy having to redo the lights this year so wrapped my tree with the lights still in place with shrink wrap and put in the garage!

Have no idea what it’ll be like when I drag it out again but hopefully it’ll save me a few hours work!

@longtompot how long does it take you to decorate your tree?

Last year i did the lights in the same way it took me approx 7- 8 hours in total (yes you read that right!) to erect, fully light and decorate the tree. The lights alone took 3-4 hours had to split it over 2 days!

Have seen sets of 1000, continuous string in both Aldi and B&M for £25-30 which is a really good price. Can confirm The B&M ever ready lights are good I’ve had them for several years now. Can’t vouch for the Aldi ones though.

BastardtheCat · 13/11/2022 07:31

@longtompot how long does it take you to decorate your tree?

Last year it probably took nearly two hours to just put the tree up & lights on, but that was because it was a new tree & lights and I put on and took off the lights about three times as they kept coming up too short. The decorations probably take about an hour.
This year the lights will probably take an hour as they will be new again, so just working out how much for each layer.
@AppleandSpice I wish I could do the same, but just don't have the space. I look forward to hearing how well it works for you this year🎄

I think you can get away with less lights on a real tree. One year we had a little tree, 3 ft I think, and just used two of my battery powered fairy lights on it, so possibly 40 lights? It was our favourite tree

Frazzled2207 · 13/11/2022 12:04

@longtompot
i think people’s expectations have massively changed reading answers on here.

i am fairly sure I have never had more than about 100 lights on a six foot tree before. They were quite spread out though, def not the cluster variety you get these days.
