People shouting 'it's November!' just look like twats.

I don't have a tree up yet, or outdoor lights, but probably will put them up next weekend.

People getting cross with others for doing the above or buying stuff for Christmas or making plans by stating the month we're currently in, though... I'm sure we are aware of the date. Just let them crack on.

Google 'when to put tree up' and notice pretty much every response (UK and USA) says the START of Advent in November.

No idea where people are pulling crap about new years eve.

Google / the internet is skewed heavily to US and the last five minutes tbh. It pays to realise this in general I think.
It was very normal growing up to put your domestic tree and decorations up on Christmas Eve. (Or just the week before maybe if you were a crazy novelty seeker!Wink)
Advent was for the anticipation.

Well in my entire life (and I'm hardly young) no one I have known has put up their Xmas tree on Xmas eve (my stepdad always threatened it but it was because he HATED Xmas, not tradition, he would say 'only up for 24 hours' only so he didn't have to face it for longer but he always did put it up normally lol).

It's great that pages upon pages of widely varying sources on google from multiple countries backing me up are 'wrong' though just because a few Mumsnet's can't accept that the whole world doesn't do what they did or that their way is not technically the 'correct' way.

People can put their tree up whenever they want, if that Xmas eve fine but they don't get to tell others they are wrong especially not when the other's point is heavily backed up and easily checkable.

The OP did not call people who don't put up decorations in November twats. She called the people who criticise others for doing so twats.

Not true. She called people who claim it's November twats.

I'm one of the people the OP refers to. I don't give a shit what anyone else does, but if people try to get me to do Christmas things or expect me to wear a Christmas jumper to work in November (a serious request for a meeting this week) then I explain to them that November is too soon for me to be celebrating Christmas. It would be nice if we could just all respect each other's boundaries.

@lazylinguist

Thank you!! Competitive cynicism is annoying all year round.

But lots of the 'It's November!' people aren't cynics at all. Like me, they love Christmas, and that's precisely why they don't want it to be diluted and dragged out over literally months.

Early Christmassing makes it bloody tedious instead of exciting. Obviously people can do what they like in their own homes, but Christmassy stuff being everywhere from September/October is just forcing it on those of us who want to save it for actual Christmas time! I want to enjoy it, not be sick of the whole thing by mid December. I wouldn't actually criticise people irl for it though, because it doesn't change anything and because I'm not a twat.

YES. 100% this. I love Christmas, just not for 2 whole months.

Festive period for me starts around stir up Sunday so this weekend just gone :) That's when I start to sense the magic building in the air!

TheFairPrincess · 23/11/2021 15:28

Though saying that we don't put the decs up til December. I try to do it on the first along with the kids advent calendars but I usually am a little late. I aim to at least get the tree up that day though :)
