I don't have a tree up yet, or outdoor lights, but probably will put them up next weekend.

People getting cross with others for doing the above or buying stuff for Christmas or making plans by stating the month we're currently in, though... I'm sure we are aware of the date. Just let them crack on.

To the 'it's November' people, WHY do you feel the need to comment that though? People know what month it is. Why can't you just mind your own business? It's not harming you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@EvilGoldfish

Confused I had no idea taking down the decorations the day after Boxing Day was so frowned upon.

We put ours up on the 1st December, it feels right to me with the dc starting to get excited as the advents calendars get dragged out (love seeing others twinkly lights whatever the date though, cheers me right up on a dark night!)

But I do like to get them all cleared away the day after Boxing Day. It feels nice starting the new year with all the clean up already done. My mum used to leave them up for ages after new year and it always felt a bit sad to me for some reason.

I grew up with 12th night thing ( not religious) so Boxing Day feels wrong as it’s still Christmas, also as an adult my celebrations carry on past the day as I work the festive period so for have to fit the fun in when I can. Ours comes down new year tho or just after depending on work shifts.
Squirrelblanket · 21/11/2021 10:22

For example, I went to a Christmas market last weekend. My BIL commented on Facebook 'in November?!' I mean, really what is the need?

Stompythedinosaur · 21/11/2021 10:22

People who come on to threads on the Christmas board to criticise others for thinking and talking about Christmas definitely look like twats, I would say. I don't understand why people do it. Do they also complain about discussions about dogs on the dog board? It makes no sense.

FitAt50 · 21/11/2021 10:25

I grew up on a rather rough council estate and my mother always said there was a difference between being poor and being common, "Common people put up their Christmas Trees in November".

PeanutButterJamming · 21/11/2021 10:25

Each to their own. I don’t mind seeing decorations up early and mince pies in the shops in November.

I don’t personally ‘start’ Christmas until we’ll into December, but it’s no harm if others want to get into the spirit earlier.

Waahingwashingwashing · 21/11/2021 10:26

My decorations go up the first Sunday in December and come down the day before I go back to work

I would only say it’s November if someone asked me why they weren’t up yet and I’d say I put them up the first Sunday in December.

grafittiartist · 21/11/2021 10:26

But it is November.

I think it’s probably because someone has just labelled them offensively and it’s on the mumsnet home page for all to see even if they don’t routinely look at Christmas pages.
Tiredalwaystired · 21/11/2021 10:39

Oops. Replied to wrong comment. Meant to comment on the one that said why are they commenting on a Christmas thread anyway

Told you I’m always tired.

Waahingwashingwashing · 21/11/2021 10:41

I didn’t notice where this thread is. I use active threads

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/11/2021 10:41

I can’t say I mind Christmas music in shops. They never play the sort I like, so I don’t get a chance to get sick of it.

I’m not at all religious, but my favourite Christmas music is largely traditional carols, sung by proper choirs, not ‘popular’ versions sung in a breathy voice with extra twiddly bits and added ‘expression’. 🤮

I don’t play any proper carols at home until 1st Dec, or at least the first Advent Sunday. Which is next Sunday this year - ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’ will be the first I’m looking for on YouTube. 🎄
Probably with the first mince pies - I save those for the proper season, too.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/11/2021 10:53

They are just expressing their (often lighthearted) opinion OP, they aren’t expecting people to take their decorations down…

Chill out

Moonface123 · 21/11/2021 10:56

My little fairy twinkle lights are up all year round in the front and back garden, l wrap them around my plants and shrubs, they are a soft warm gold , then l add a couple more bits this time of year. l have a little four foot scarecrow l decorate to match the seasons so soon she will be wearing a santa hat, complete with a stocking.
My teenage sons have turned downstairs into a gym like area so not alot l can do with that for now, but l will decorate my bedroom.
l do tend to leave my gift and food shopping quite late though as not very organised but it still kind of works out.

Squirrelblanket · 21/11/2021 10:57

But the OP is just expressing her opinion too. That they are twats. Grin

The "It's November" types pale into insignificance to the Is this A THING ones when someone asks about Christmas Eve Hampers (I do a Dec 1st Box as mne are adults)
More tat" they scorn . Why d'you need more presents, isn't Christmas Day enough ? Whatever next ?Boxing Day Baskets^ ? (Chuckle Chuckle I'm so funny and superior , care about the planet , you;re all just feeding off the commercialism of it) Xmas Hmm

CEH/D1stB are things mine need - underwear , loungewear , pyjamas , some toiletries . Add some sweets , pens, a book.

The Is this A THING type , I can see the look of mock horror , the arched raised eyebrows and the 0 shaped mouth/ CatsBum Mouth .

No , i's not A THING , no-one is forcing anyone , no-one is holding a gun to your head . It doesn't have to be plastic tat and it hasn't turned my DC into greedy little shits by having a pretty box to open.

Or maybe "Yes it is A Thing. It's the law now . Didn't you get the memo" ?

lollipoprainbow · 21/11/2021 11:07

I personally don't know why people feel the need to rush from one celebration to the next, when Halloween ends I like to wait a while before putting my Christmas tree up usually second week of December.

NewlySingle2021 · 21/11/2021 11:11

@lollipoprainbow maybe because they feel it's nice to have the next thing to look forward to? It's been a bleak couple of years for so many people, I certainly feel like it's good for me to celebrate as many occasions as possible. Personally it keeps my spirits up having the next goal, and Christmas is such a big one. Although I agree it would be good to have at least a week in shops between Halloween stuff and Christmas stuff. My local supermarket had both out for weeks since end of Sept which was a bit bonkers! No doubt next week they'll have the Easter eggs out Grin

@Squirrelblanket

I'll stop reminding people that Christmas is in December (and the later part of it) when they stop telling me I'm a "miserable bitch", "a grinch" or "boring" because my tree isn't up yet. Or because I don't cover my house in lights. Or tell me I'm stingy because I have a budget and stick to it. Or that they just "love Christmas" so much like it makes them morally superior.

All comments my brother and sister in law have directed at me this weekend by the way.

equuscaballus · 21/11/2021 11:29

I feel really strongly about this.

If people want to put up xmas decorations in November that's fine, it doesn't encroach upon me.

However, I hate, hate, hate that xmas is becoming a 4 month season instead of a special event.

I'm on a low budget and I begin spreading the costs and shopping in September to cope.

But Xmas to me is special because of the narrow window it occupies. To recapture that childlike magical christmas feeling, it has to be that way, so I try to guard myself from all xmas things until it really is xmas. Its a losing battle and its depressing for me.

Xmas songs started in shops in October.

My neighbours play loud Xmas songs nearly every day and they started on the 1st September.

It makes me sad that people are so focussed on one short holiday, essentially wishing months of their lives away and not living lives to their fullest.

I think the way I can't avoid this (Xmas music) in any way if fuelling what is probably an unreasonable attitude on my part!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/11/2021 11:32

Well I'm currently sitting in a service station car park waiting to meet my brother to transfer the Christmas presents from my parents to my children as they are nervous after last year... when they got delivered at Easter.

I got the November comments one year when we had our tree up etc at this this time... completely missing the reason behind it of DH having his two weeks leave from Afghanistan and wanting to celebrate Christmas with our then toddler... who frankly didn't know we did it a month early and had a brilliant time.

lollipoprainbow · 21/11/2021 11:34

@equuscaballus exactly this! It feels like People are wishing their lives away going from one thing to the next so quickly without taking time to stop and relax for a while!

gogohm · 21/11/2021 11:39

I'm in the it's still November camp. We may put them up next Sunday, advent Sunday though

gogohm · 21/11/2021 11:42

@LagerthaofKattegat

Of course we don't have the funds to buy everything from November's salary, we save up... some of us can put money aside, I don't want presents lying around for months. I will order online around the 10 December and go to the shops that weekend for things that I can't order. I save money monthly for annual expenses

Europilgrim · 21/11/2021 11:43

I love twelfth night so it annoys me when people say they're fed up by Boxing day! Christmas has only just started.
