I don't have a tree up yet, or outdoor lights, but probably will put them up next weekend.

People getting cross with others for doing the above or buying stuff for Christmas or making plans by stating the month we're currently in, though... I'm sure we are aware of the date. Just let them crack on.

I understand that retailers get a bit deosperate, but I think public decorations before Remembrance Sunday is wrong. I think before Advent Sunday is premature, but nit wrong.

Unless there are early January birthdays in the household (and you want the house clear of Christmas so the two celebrations don't blur into one) I think it's rather joyless to cut short the 12 days of Christmas

But I don't go round shouting it at people.

lightisnotwhite · 21/11/2021 09:38

@Bagelsandbrie

I’m one of the “it’s November” people.

I don’t really care what people do in the grand scheme of things but personally I think it makes the whole thing feel like it goes on forever, and there’s a lot of pressure to buy more and more and more and the kids all get super excited super early when there’s weeks to go! But you all crack on…..

Me too.

I dislike the attitude that it doesn’t affect anyone else. If as a society it becomes the norm to start in November ( which it clearly has ) then of course it does.

I had a lovely time in Barcelona a few years back, the week before Christmas ( I know they do it on the 6th) . Lights up, shops decorated but no one was going mad. People cheerily going round as normal.
Compare that to here where the shops are rammed every weekend, queues, shortages and panic buying . It’s just a massive consumer fest in an attempt to the obtain very peace and goodwill that’s been removed.

Bluntness100 · 21/11/2021 09:39

Gosh, I have never witnessed anyone shouting it’s November. Where is this occuring? In the shops? Your home? On the street?

LoveGoldberg · 21/11/2021 09:39

I wouldn’t put mine up yet but I would maybe next week - but I feel in any because DD has a birthday just before Christmas and I’m conscious of not taking away from her birthday so I put it up the day after

EvilGoldfish · 21/11/2021 09:45

Confused I had no idea taking down the decorations the day after Boxing Day was so frowned upon.

We put ours up on the 1st December, it feels right to me with the dc starting to get excited as the advents calendars get dragged out (love seeing others twinkly lights whatever the date though, cheers me right up on a dark night!)

But I do like to get them all cleared away the day after Boxing Day. It feels nice starting the new year with all the clean up already done. My mum used to leave them up for ages after new year and it always felt a bit sad to me for some reason.

FingersofFish · 21/11/2021 09:46

@MrsLargeEmbodied

i saw a tree in someone's bay window on @ 12th November
May be you drove past my house? Trees started going up last week and decorating them this weekend.
maya71 · 21/11/2021 09:46

It's still very much Autumn atm so I find it odd that anyone would be putting up Christms decorations- it's a midwinter festival. I also find it very sad when people take their decorations down on Boxing Day as if its all over. I love the week between Christmas and New Year.

I do like lights up outside whilst it's so dark though and think it would be nice if they stayed up throughout January as well.

toomuchlaundry · 21/11/2021 09:46

When I was a child I don’t remember Christmas starting so early. Shops now seem to have Christmas stuff in even before Halloween is over.

toomuchlaundry · 21/11/2021 09:49

@EvilGoldfish did your mum follow the 12 days of Christmas so took decorations down by 6th January.

Maybe people followed the religious traditions more and now it is totally consumerism

Cattenberg · 21/11/2021 09:54

Yes to starting your Christmas shopping early.

No to putting up your decorations in November. For me, there are 12 days of Christmas, starting on 25 December. If you put your decorations up nearly two months beforehand, Christmas doesn’t feel as special when it does arrive.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/11/2021 09:54

I don’t put any decorations up until at least December*, but I don’t care whether anyone else does. I rather like seeing trees in other people’s windows.

I don’t understand those people who put decs up so early, though, and then tear them all down on Boxing Day. I love the week between Christmas and N Year - it still feels Christmassy to me - but relatively very relaxing - hardly any shopping, and not much cooking (lots of lovely leftovers to eat up.)

As for people who say they hate Christmas because it’s so commercialised, well, it is, now, but who forces you to buy into it? You can keep it fairly simple if you want to.

*Though I have to confess that next weekend I will be putting the Father Christmas duvet set on the double bed little Gdcs will be sharing next Saturday night. Sunday 28th is the beginning of Advent after all, so that makes it all right. 🙂

OhMyCrump · 21/11/2021 09:55

For me the days after Christmas are most enjoyable because all the work is done. Its still a long old slog through dark nights and cold weather so I like to leave mine up the whole 12 days.
They go up early December.
I have started to adopt a winter festival frame of mind instead of Christmas per se.
So I don't start clearing out, diets, new years resolutions until spring, which feels more naturally like the start of a new year to me.
I keep some lights up and cosy candles etc throughout winter.
Otherwise Jan/Feb is just too bleak to me!

Nyxly · 21/11/2021 09:55

Ah so people can't do things on their own house, just incase it becomes the norm and some people don't like it?
🙄

sageandbasil · 21/11/2021 09:55

I'm due with my first on the 1st Dec so we're putting our tree up next weekend. It still feels so so early but itl be nice having it up. I like seeing peoples decorations but it does feel too early! I'd never say anything tho, each to their own and all that

NamechangeApril21 · 21/11/2021 09:55

Im one of those "its November" people, but dont really care if other people want to crack on in November, I just hate them calling me a Grinch or saying I hate Christmas! No, I love Christmas, I just don't want to be sick of it by the time it actually comes!

leafygarden42 · 21/11/2021 09:56

I say 'YAY' - the earlier the better Xmas Smile Xmas Grin

Crack on all ye November twats

OhMyCrump · 21/11/2021 09:58

You're right, but the pressure is there and sort of seeps into you. I think I'm quite a suggestible person and feel external pressures and it takes quite a lot of effort to ignore it!
Last few years I've dramatically scaled back though so I do agree.

Xtraincome · 21/11/2021 10:04

I love seeing trees and decorations up early!
We do ours 2nd week of December and leave it up until DH birthday on 9th January.
I think people who are super critical and unkind in their responses are feeling a way about the festive season. It's not all warm memories and festive cheer for everyone so I think we should just leave them be.
But, then there's a few who just act like grumpy gits as they are just grumpy anyway and like to moan about something. Either way, they can please themselves.

I bloody love Christmas too!!!

HesperusWreck · 21/11/2021 10:05

I am going to keep them up until 12th night though.

SnowyPetals · 21/11/2021 10:09

Some people just love the competitive downplaying of Christmas : "I put out one small Scandinavian reindeer ornament made from sustainable sources on Christmas Eve, we all buy each other one book, which we exchange on Christmas Day after our lunch of soup and bread." All the while screaming in their head "And this makes me a far superior person to everyone else"!

ThisBear · 21/11/2021 10:09

I love being able to choose Christmas things early in the shops. We spend a lot of December seeing family and friends, so I like the chance to look around in the run up to it. And plenty of the seasonal items are wintry not just Christmassy, after all.

PenguinIce · 21/11/2021 10:10

I am all for starting Christmas early but it is so annoying when everyone wants it done and dusted by Boxing Day or even earlier! Especially the shops, the shop assistant in Tesco laughed at me and said ‘I had left it too late’ to buy mince pies when I tried to get them the week before Christmas last year! Isn’t the week before Christmas when you should be able to buy mince pies!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 21/11/2021 10:14

I'm in the "it's November" gang. It's less about wanting an ascetic Christmas, and more about not wanting to be rushed on from the delights of Autumn. We're off out for a walk in the gloriously crunchy leaves, and I have the lushest, most warming Autumnal playlist to listen to while I make an apple crumble later. I also love carols and mince pies, but don't rush me Grin.

Tiredalwaystired · 21/11/2021 10:16

Ooh lovely. Was just thinking that we’ve only got leave or remain Tory and Labour, mask or mask less, vaccinated or unvaccinated and climate emergency or denial to use as ammunition again someone who doesn’t share our views. I’m SO glad we can now form a tribe with either pre or post Dec 1 and call THEM twats too

FFS. CHILDREN, LETS JUST PLAY NICE!

Sprostongreen21 · 21/11/2021 10:16

@TopTabby won’t let me quote your post.

I’m hardly knocking on doors saying ‘it’s onlyNovember take your tree down for gods sake!’

But if I’m having a conversation with someone I’m going to say ‘oh no my tree isn’t up it’s only November!’ My decorations are up in December through to January. And it does bug me when people do Christmas too early and then complain about it dragging on! Sorry.

it’s a free world I can have my own thoughts and opinions and air them. Just the same as someone who puts their decorations up in November! Grin it’s lighthearted.
