Thanks for the last thread @MissCherryCakeyBun and thread title @OneMorePieceOfCheese and @room4onemore

Hoping someone can give me some advice. I'm contemplating asking my husband for an Ancestry subscription for Christmas but trying to work out realistically if it's in budget.

I can see you can get £14 off the £69 6 month UK & Ireland subscription, and can possibly go through a cash back site? But I'm wondering if there is likely to be any Black Friday deals instead.

Has anyone bought an Ancestry subscription as a gift and for bargain?!

Famousthehero · 04/10/2021 13:36

For those buying metal detectors, we’ve had one for a while now and they’re great fun. I would advise checking the graph when it beeps for how deep down the object actually is before you start digging, and getting a decent shovel to go with it as it’s often hard work…

Vebrithien · 04/10/2021 13:39

These were the best bits I found from B&M.

An afternoon tea set/hamper for £5 (ideal for my Great Aunt, who doesn't eat chocolate).

Tiny, £1 gingerbread houses (will go into Dad's advent calendar).

Set of 4 sweet scented girls perfumes, £5. These will be perfect for DD's first scents (she's 5, but keeps wanting to have my perfume on, she's getting expensive to run!)

We have this shovel and it’s great at slicing through tough ground but I would say not suitable for younger children as it’s sharp. Oh and consider what you will do with your dirty shovel after the hunt!

Vebrithien · 04/10/2021 13:45

And from Matalan, there were some nice, interesting toys available.

A carry case, with a toy pizza oven inside (ideal for DGodson, who loves pretending to be his Daddy) £8

A wooden smoothy maker (£10) for DNiece.

I also got a voucher for 20% off, next time I am in store.

Has anyone spotted a naked marshmallow discount code? I can’t find one, I would be overjoyed with free postage Xmas Blush

Lurleene · 04/10/2021 13:50

@TummyTurtle my library is currently offering members online access from home to Ancestry for free until at least the end of the year. Might be worth finding out if your local council offers the same so you can see if you get on with it?

psuedocream3 · 04/10/2021 14:05

Sorry to hear everyone's perfume and aftershave orders were cancelled, mine too, although I am glad I haven't had to chase anyone for a refund.

@TummyTurtle My husband enjoys ancestry, he just logs on on the free days they often do to see if any new leads etc have popped up. They do a half price offer on the ancestry DNA kit on Black Friday, worth every penny

friskybivalves · 04/10/2021 14:07

Just spotted that my new Sparks offers included a free bag of Percy Pigs! First half decent thing I've had in yonks. Might be worth others checking.

Couple of bits from the Tesco toy sale today for the present box.

Colour in unicorn bag £5
Paint your own plant pot £2.25 - thought this would make a sweet little gift with a packet of seeds

@clpsmum

Nice little set for £10 with free bag
Thanks so much for this, just ordered to go with my sisters present!
MrsS92 · 04/10/2021 14:23

I thought this was a good price for Davidoff Cool Water Femme on Amazon. Only £12.

hoolahoola22 · 04/10/2021 14:23

@TheGirlWhoLived so hard to buy for them

clpsmum · 04/10/2021 14:25

@Alwaysroomforcake you're welcome I thought it was a lovely little gift

DoucheCanoe · 04/10/2021 14:27

Day off work today so I hit the charity shops. Ended up with a mini haul for the 9yo, the puzzle is on her Christmas list any way but Screwball scramble is for my enjoyment mostly Xmas Grin All this for £11!

Worth looking as they had some very reasonably priced new Christmas stock (the kind that's stocked nationwide) - the socks were £1.49 for 2 pairs and perfect for stockings!

Quick question! A couple of weeks ago M&S had some gorgeous snow dome glass Hogwarts baubles. Put one in my basket for DD and they had sold out by the time I got to checkout! Anyone seen these in stores at all? I don’t want to go all the way into town if there aren’t any in store….the only one I can find on eBay is some chancer flogging them for over £30 each 😬

hoolahoola22 · 04/10/2021 14:28

@thaegumathteth @Dolphintrainer @PhantomErik thank you for ideas

@letsplaybamboozled is your dairy milk chocolate house accessible or hidden? Wondering if it's gluten free, we can't do the normal gingerbread houses as I'm gluten free

BestofLuck · 04/10/2021 14:53

@TummyTurtle I agree that its worth hanging on for an Ancestry deal. I’ve had subscriptions before and sometimes wait for an offer. They also do offers on gift purchases of the DNA text as others have said.

RevolvingPivot · 04/10/2021 14:54

@Vebrithien I got the gingerbread houses too
