Unexpected hit presents

What random presents have you given or received this yeah that have gone down really well? I got DH a beanie hat with an LED torch on the front for going into the loft as we don’t have a light up there, and he can never find his torch (and when he does it’s out of charge, and he ends up using the torch on his phone). It was super cheap and a bit of a last minute random thing, but he loves it! It’s really bright, and we’ve already both used it loads for going out into the garden to get things from the garage fridge. I especially love it as I used to hate going into the garage when it was dark and groping around for the light switch....

Anyone else got something similar?

I got my ds18 this, I needed to get him one small thing and saw it on Amazon. Wasn't expecting him to think anything of it. He was using it all day yesterday and has got quite good at it. Kept him off he's phone most of the day.

For my teenage DDs the Oodies were a big hit. DDs spent all day in them and have slunk downstairs this morning still dressed in them.

Onedropbeat · 26/12/2020 11:50

It’s integrated ao has a wooden door stuck to it unfortunately Sad

Limpshade · 26/12/2020 11:52

Yo-yos were the big hit for both DD4 and DD2. As a child of the 80s, I am not-so-secretly thrilled Grin

Shinyletsbebadguys · 26/12/2020 11:57

This year everything was about expected in terms of hit level but I still smile because 2 years ago I bought my DP some reindeer socks as a joke , he struggles with Christmas due to his upbringing so isn't into Christmas fun bits except for the DC (when in all fairness she participates cheerfully and happily for them) but blow me second year running they appeared on the 1st of december and stay as often as possible throughout.

Makes me smile now every time I see them. For a man who genuinely has good reason to struggle with xmas , he flipping loves the reindeer socks Xmas Grin

Theres something endearing about a hulking manly bloke with Rudolph peeking out form under his trousers Grin

DS15 and DD11 absolutely loved their tiny 'Among Us' plushes-bought as a stocking filler!! I didn't realise how big that game was! i-pads were a close second!!!!

MarmiteWine · 26/12/2020 11:59

The tin of smoked paprika I bought for my sister! I now also need to buy one for my mum.

And if anyone can suggest any other foodstuffs that come in fantastic tins and readily available in bricks and mortar shops then I'm all ears.

Credit to MN, the perfect bag for my tween that S&B helped me find. It’s a practical present (she needs it for the commute to school) but she’s so pleased and clearly thought that I’d either ignored her hints or would have got one that was all wrong and embarrassing.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 26/12/2020 12:23

I got my DS4 down magnetic letters to replace the ones he broke. He took the box to bed with him 😂

TheCrow · 26/12/2020 12:26

DP bought Dcat a flopping fish toy, I think that was DDs favourite thing this year, she played with it more than some of her carefully thought out presents from me 😂 As an extra this year I got DB and his girlfriend a voucher for an 11 course tasting menu at a Lebanese restaurant using the buyagift discount code. They're in tier 4 currently and usually eat out a lot so they said they're very much looking forward to being able to use it so that was an unexpected hit 🙂

stanski · 26/12/2020 12:31

I received A device to turn negatives into digital photos, which I'm super chuffed about as have so many negatives from my grandparents' times I can bring back to life and access.

Fizbosshoes · 26/12/2020 12:32

A whoopee cushion. It’s the best thing ever apparently

You cant beat a whoopee cushion! GrinDS chose to get that as his present to DH ...I think me and DS are the only ones who find it hilarious!

UndertheCedartree · 26/12/2020 12:33

I bought my DS a 'pick your path' book called 'Oregon Trail'. I was a bit disappointed when it arrived as it wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting a thick novel type book. Anyway turns out it is based on an old text based computer game and he loves retro things like that so he was thrilled with it!

Inastatus · 26/12/2020 12:34

@TheCrow - we bought our cats the flopping fish too. Our male cat is a bit freaked out by it though.
My teen DS’s favourite present is his William’s F1 racing rubber duck 😅

UndertheCedartree · 26/12/2020 12:42

@Onedropbeat - you can get kid's easels with othe side chalkboard and one side white board that is also magnectic. I always used that for magnetic things as didn't like the idea of continually having to take the magnets off the fridge to clean it!

Mommabear20 · 26/12/2020 12:44

A friend got our DD a toy that has a (plastic) snow glove on top, if you press a button the snowman in the glove spins around and has lights and plays music! Don't know who likes it more, our 6month old DD or my DH 😂

MissMogwai · 26/12/2020 12:45

A big box of Japanese sweets/savoury bits for 16yo DD. Lots of different snacks and a guide telling us what they are.

She loved it and spent most of the afternoon tormenting her older siblings with the more odd ones. Ground fish sweets anyone? 😷

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 26/12/2020 13:31

It wasn’t a surprise that my DD loved her fake oodie, she’s one of those teens that’s always in giant hoodies and wrapped up in blankets so a combination of the two with a cute print was a sure success. What was a surprise was my family’s reaction to the photo of her in it I put on our WhatsApp group. They’d never seen or heard of oodies before, but now they all want one. So basically that’s everyone’s birthday present for the next year sorted.

mummyof2boys30 · 26/12/2020 13:48

Both got a ps5 each. Favourite present was the 7. 50 rc car for one, and uno minecraft the other lol

santasmincepie · 26/12/2020 13:51

DS(1) absolutely loved a flashing spiky ball. Cost all of £1.50. My mum also got him some socks with reindeer rattles on them. Usually he takes all socks off, but he's refused to part with them!

He actually really enjoyed his stocking. I wasn't sure how he'd react but he was interested in everything. The age old "they're only interested in the wrapping paper" wasn't true in my house!

sociallydistained · 26/12/2020 14:06

@CarlottaValdez

6 year old DS is hilariously thrilled with a beige hoody from his great aunt. I mean I’m not knocking it, it’s a lovely and practical present I’m just tickled it’s got such a big reaction. I think he thinks it’s very grown up maybe.
This is so cute Grin
Longbarn5 · 26/12/2020 14:28

Persian - That is the loveliest post I have ever seen, how cute 😁 what a sweetie

Whatayear1234 · 26/12/2020 15:24

Love this thread!

@CuddlyDudley71 just looked up Among Us plush for DD. She played the game on her new nintendo switch yesterday. It amused me because the game was so cheap (literally a few pounds) whereas the other game she got was expensive. Guess which one is her favourite?! Grin

SunsetBeetch · 26/12/2020 15:33

This is a lovely thread. Love all the children being over the moon with the simpler gifts.

My brother was chuffed with the huge box of Yorkshire Tea teabags I got him. And the cat has had a whale of a time with all the empty bags and boxes (she totally ignored her new catnip toy).
