Here ye, here ye!

Day one of my Christmas Quiz Smile

All welcome, sadly no prizes - except a smug smile and a pat on your own back Grin

I'll post one question per day until Christmas Eve.

So, grab yourself a festive drink and snack of your choice and keep away from Google!

Bets of luck Xmas Smile

Jingle Bells was the first song to be broadcast from space, in a prank by Gemini 6 crewmen on 16th December 1965.

< hopes for an elf star Star >

For people who like a Christmassy challenge, which I assume includes everyone on this thread, I highly recommend this Twitter thread from Richard Osman who apparently has way too much time on his hands.

Yes Miss Fanny Bright and Welsh.

I didn't know the details of the song in space Ada but I knew it happened.

I shall be checking out that Twitter thingy thanks Hungry .

IAWL is my very favourite film.....Bedford Falls and Pottersville.

TrickyD · 22/12/2020 18:29

Thank God it's Christmas, Queen

One of the towns was Bedford Falls (we live in the ordinary Bedford)

elQuintoConyo · 22/12/2020 18:35

Ordinary Bedford! I remember watching an episode of the Likely Lads and Bob said "went to Bedford, but it was shut" Xmas Grin

I'm too familiar with Luton than I'd like to be, Bedford was a breathe of fresh air!

OP posts:
TrickyD · 22/12/2020 18:50

It's even more shut now. 🙁

InTheCludgie · 22/12/2020 20:41

O.M.G. final countdown to Christmas dinner!

Question 23:
In what country is it said that finding a spider web on Christmas morning brings good luck, and so Christmas trees are decorated with artificial spider webs?

Sounds awesome, looks beautiful. I may make a bead spider for my tree next year.

For a bonus just because...
In A Charlie Brown Christmas, who plays the dusty inkeeper in their Christmas play?

Enjoy. I'm off to make gingerbread men and stuffing Xmas Smile

Spider web Christmas tree decorations are popular in Poland and in Ukraine. In Poland it's linked to the story of spiders weaving a blanket for the Baby Jesus in the manger, so spiders are a symbol of good luck at Christmastide.
Poland has some lovely Christmas traditions, strands of hay under the tablecloth during Christmas Eve dinner for example.

FindHungrySamurai · 23/12/2020 12:42

Linus must be the innkeeper.
But I have no idea about the spiders webs. It’s no country I’ve ever been to so I’m going to guess Montenegro.

TrickyD · 23/12/2020 13:25

Ukraine main centre for lucky spiders’ webs, but also Germany and a Poland.

elQuintoConyo · 23/12/2020 21:18

Ukraine, but yes other countries with slightly different rereasons.

Pigpen was the 'dusty' innkeeper Xmas Grin

The last time I had a real Christmas tree about a thousand baby spiders emerged from it and bungeed up and down from the ceiling for bloody hours.

I swept them all up very gently but they did have to go outside into the garden.

elQuintoConyo · 24/12/2020 16:43

JamieLeesCurains that's both horrifying and bloody hilarious in equal measures! Xmas Grin
