Here ye, here ye!

Day one of my Christmas Quiz Smile

All welcome, sadly no prizes - except a smug smile and a pat on your own back Grin

I'll post one question per day until Christmas Eve.

So, grab yourself a festive drink and snack of your choice and keep away from Google!

Bets of luck Xmas Smile

Society columnist and movie trailer maker?
I love the film

FindHungrySamurai · 12/12/2020 10:37

I’ve just got a free trial of BritBox and it has Middlemarch on it! I definitely need to rewatch because....I’m a big fan of George Elliot’s mature and thought provoking novels? Yes that’s definitely it.

PassataQueenofBritain · 12/12/2020 15:56

She made commercials! (Adverts)

AdaColeman · 12/12/2020 16:52

I must admit that I've not seen the film, but on looking it up, I noticed that Diaz & Law had been nominated for the Meilleur Baiser award!

PassataQueenofBritain · 12/12/2020 17:35

It's actually quite a good film! I watched it last January when dh was still working away and I had the television to myself Grin
Ok, it's not deep philosophy, but as froth goes it was lovely.

InTheCludgie · 12/12/2020 20:29

I really want to watch the holiday now! Might save it for Xmas eve when DH is working. No clue about the answer to todays question - I've only watched it once and have a piss poor memory

elQuintoConyo · 13/12/2020 13:43

Woh time has flown! Helping small person with a science project for Wednesday, damn loo roll windmills are surprisingly tricky!

In The Holiday, Kate Winslet is a wedding and society columnist for The Telegraph, Cameron Diaz is a movie trailer producer. Sounds random - sounds fun!

Today I'll treat you to more than one question, to make up for my tardiness Xmas Blush

Question:
13A:
What year was The Snowman first shown?

13B:
Brandy is made from distilling what?

13C:
Which carol contains the line "star with royal beauty bright"?

13D:
Christmas Island is a territory of which country?

13E:
How many times has Do They Know It's Christmas been number 1 in the UK charts?

Happy head-scratching Sunday Xmas Grin

OP posts:
AdaColeman · 13/12/2020 14:14

13B Brandy is distilled from wine (fermented grape). Wine Wine Wine

13C That line comes from "We three kings of Orient are..."

!3D Christmas Island was named by the British East India Company IIRC, is it an Australian territory now? I know it's been in the news recently.

No idea on the music question, or The Snowman, but I'm sure we had the book in the 1970s so it must be later than that as the book appeared first.

How's your supply of sticky backed plastic and wire coat hangers doing? If only we could always say "Here's one I prepared earlier"!

Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

elQuintoConyo · 14/12/2020 09:55

Happy Monday!

This is an easy one:

OP posts:
LunaNorth · 14/12/2020 10:00

203 including 50 bonus for seven letters?

PassataQueenofBritain · 15/12/2020 13:02

Won't it differ according to the placement, because of the double letter squares? As you'd need two letters to already be on the board, it's not possible to determine which double-letter tiles have been used first?
Plain placement, I'd say 195.

PassataQueenofBritain · 15/12/2020 13:03

It would be possible to place the word across two triple word squares, which would obviously give you squillions of points, and you'd go down in our family history forever!

AdaColeman · 15/12/2020 13:18

Surely it's not possible to give a definitive answer, as it would depend on how it was placed on the board?

TrickyD · 15/12/2020 14:00

But, Ada, doesn't Quinto mean the theoretical maximum? If you start on a corner triple word you can reach the next one so you multiply your basic letter score by three then three again then add the bonus. Which is what Passata said.
Even in an actual game it would work if by some amazing chance two words had been placed so two of their tiles were in the stretch between two triple word squares and you had the seven other Christmas tiles.

AdaColeman · 15/12/2020 14:28

Yes, I can see how you got your answer Tricky! It's years since I've played Scrabble, and I've forgotten some of the finer points of the scoring.

PassataQueenofBritain · 15/12/2020 14:43

I think I get 576 allowing for going across two triple word scores, but not getting a point for two letters worth one that you have crossed. Hope that makes sense (I've forgotten, you don't count the points on tiles already laid, no?)
