Haha wow if that's not unanimous! Hadn't even considered that, will do some research! Is there anything I need to consider security-wise (ie can she accidentally access any material that she shouldn't?)? I am totally in the dark about things like this old!

Dolceandgabbana14 · 08/09/2018 22:05

My kids tell Alexa to play Justin bloody Fletcher all the body time Confused

My DD wants an Echo for for her bedroom but we only have one Prime subscription and I don't know if one Prime account could cope with more than one Dot?

WhirlwindHugs · 08/09/2018 22:34

I didn't want alexa (they listen in all the time and record quite a lot in order to be responsive, which either creeps you out or doesn't!)

So DD has a CD player. It actually works great for us. But not very techy!

An ipod and some kind of Dock or wireless speaker is another alternative option.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 08/09/2018 22:35

Another one here that can't recommend the echo dot enough for kids bedrooms (although I also am fed up with Ed Sheeran, Katie perry etc etc !)
Also great for asking questions - some of the answers are hilarious, using as an alarm etc
We upgraded our Spotify to a family membership so 5 people (might even be 6?) can use it on separate devices. Works brilliantly.
Today I was listening to music on the radio on one echo dot , my husband was listening to the cricket in another and the girls were in one of the bedrooms alternating between asking Alexa to tell jokes and play various songs.
Got 3 of them for around £30 each at Amazon (they are the smaller dots) and they are brilliant
Bought my parents one for Christmas and as well as music etc they use theirs to turn the lights on and off when they are away overnight as well as controlling the heating
Scary what technology can do nowadays!!

LittleMousewithcloggson · 08/09/2018 22:37

When my kids were younger though they had a cd karaoke machine - around £40 - which was also great if you don't want kids to have Alexa just yet

LittleMousewithcloggson · 08/09/2018 22:37

An iPod is another good idea

Singingitoverandoverandover · 08/09/2018 22:38

Seen this playmobil bus online reduced to a tenner in Tescos store so went for a look and my local large store had them too, in the yellow special offers basket. (Seems to be a new thing) but worth a look if you fancy a bus!
Also fortnite monopoly due to be released in October, be a good gift for gaming kids and teens.

Thanks singing! I've had that playmobil bus in my Amazon wish list for a while! I'll pop to a Tescos asap!

louise5754 · 08/09/2018 22:41

Hi. Sorry to ask but what else do you need with the Alexa? I've seen comments about prime and Spotify. How does it work? My brother has one and my kids love it x

Polkapjs · 08/09/2018 22:42

Can someone tell me how an echo/ dot works? Thanks

BoBro · 08/09/2018 22:43

My 11yr old and 14 yr old have Amazon dots in their rooms and we have a bigger one in the kitchen.
The kitchen one is linked to HD's spotifty, while the bedroom ones are currently just used for playing the radio and setting morning wake up alarms.
I am thinking about getting one for the 7 yr old too.

BoBro · 08/09/2018 22:44

Dh not hd!

BoBro · 08/09/2018 22:46

Dolce - we don't have any prime accounts, but do have 3 'Alexas' and they all work perfectly. We should upgrade our Spotify for more people, but they are great for just playing the radio too.

nickdrakeslovechild · 08/09/2018 22:53

We have an alexa dot and the big one and the google one, all linked to a family spotify account, at any one time dd can be listening to crap in her bedroom, me the radio in the kitchen and OH on the onther in the bedroom. I think they work best with a good wifi and spotify as that has the most music, but if you just want radio, sounds like sleep sounds or ask alexa just good wifi is ok. We love our alexas in this house and my DD asks it to tell her a joke nearly every day. It has also solved so many rows, like what year was this song (being played) released or you can also ask it the name of the song if you are listening to the radio.

Singingitoverandoverandover · 08/09/2018 22:56

Toys for a pound website have a few new things that I think are good value.

How much is family Spotify access? I'm paying £14.99 per month for Amazon unlimited, is spotify cheaper?

whatwillicallmyself · 08/09/2018 23:21

Can I ask with regards to the alexa what do you mean they listen in and record ?

thaegumathteth · 08/09/2018 23:26

Dd would adore a DOT but the listening in thing definitely puts me off. She has an iPhone 5 without a SIM card. I am totally and utterly technophobic - can I buy a speaker and play music from Spotify through the phone? (If I subscribe)

thaegumathteth · 08/09/2018 23:29

@whatwillicallmyself this explains it

here

Singingitoverandoverandover · 08/09/2018 23:30

Have a quick google about the Alexa things and information being recorded.. I wouldn’t have one!
