Made mine! Chuffed wi masel!

goose1964 · 24/10/2017 13:29

Did start soaking the fruit, I send the last of the cinnamon brandy we brought back from Greece years ago. The mixture really smells like Christmas. If any one fancies making their own cinnamon brandy, it's just cinnamon sticks in brandy left to infuse

GherkinSnatch · 24/10/2017 14:27

Ah you used last years brandy @goose1964 ? That gives me more confidence in using my last years brandy. At least for soaking the fruit in...

AethelflaedsWhiteGoose · 24/10/2017 14:34

Loving your work/cakes! I always make mine the weekend after Halloween. Usually a Delia recipe but I'm tempted to ring the changes and try a Mary Berry one.

warmfirescoldnights · 24/10/2017 14:42

@drinkswineoutofamug Your cake looks exactly how I want mine to! Please could you share your recipe?

montymum · 24/10/2017 14:53

I am making mine in Thursday. Fruit currently soaking in brandy. The recipe I use is my grandma's recipe which was given to her (well her mum) by an army major during the second world war. Can't wait for the smell of it baking although we moved house this year do it is the first time I have baked it in an electric oven so hope it comes out ok.

gillybeanz · 24/10/2017 15:00

I'm doing mine next week when dd goes back to school.
before then I'll have to gut the kitchen as it's minging atm.
Cake likely to be put back until the end of next week.

@warmfirescoldnights

It’s a Mrs beetons

See if this works

Sorry about the biro on it, had this boom for 19 years!

I used ginger powder this year and buy a bag of mixed fruit and peel , it adds up to about 625g of fruit. Halve the cherries and break the walnuts in to big chunky bits

Not yet I’ll soak the fruit next weekend but I wait till after my birthday.

Stir up Sundays not till the 26th of November though so you’re all earlybirds Grin

Honeydragon · 24/10/2017 16:39

I’ve got one left from last year begging to eaten with some cheese as it’s uniced

clary · 24/10/2017 17:00

Stir up Sunday is for Christmas pudding, not cake! :)

Honeydragon · 24/10/2017 17:40

Damnit! That argument happened a few years ago and I was overuled and told it was cake. I bloody knew they were all lying Shock

drinkswineoutofamug · 24/10/2017 17:49

I’m actually late honeydragon it’s normally drowning in brandy by now.

GherkinSnatch · 24/10/2017 18:15

We could start a thread for you honeydragon and put all the people who say it's for cake right Grin

And then laugh while we have our lovely rich, well seasoned, Christmas cakes while getting drunk off the fumes.

Honeydragon · 24/10/2017 20:15

Please please don’t ....I nearly started World War III over the correct way to assemble the Christmas Trifle and whether or not jelly is allowed Blush

Youreadthebabybooks · 24/10/2017 20:27

Has anyone got a suggestion for alternative to marzipan ... nut allergies mean marzipan is a no no ....... anyone have an alternative ?

Honeydragon · 24/10/2017 20:37

GherkinSnatch · 24/10/2017 20:58

drinkswineoutofamug · 24/10/2017 21:30

Jelly goes in a trifle! It’s the law!

First it’s the brandy soaked sponge fingers , then a tin of fruit, jelly, custard , whipped cream and sprinkles on top.

warmfirescoldnights · 24/10/2017 22:24

@drinkswineoutofamug thank you! So do you leave the cake like that and then add alcohol to it until Christmas? Or are you meant to soak the fruit for ages before you bake the cake? Smile Wine

drinkswineoutofamug · 24/10/2017 22:27

Yes , I’ve got it wrapped up in tin foil in an air tight container. Each week I will give it a drink.
I didn’t soak my fruit just bunged it all in.
