What is dishwasher vodka and, is it a good gift?

I've seen it come up on here before but I can't work out what it is. Can you get away with using the cheap stuff?

I have absolutely no idea, i thought from reading your title it was extra good at getting rid of the grease build up or something
until you mentioned a gift.

Intrigued to know what it actually is!!!

i use lemon juice to degrease my dishwasher - no way i'd waste perfectly good booze!

I really dont know what it is but, Im sure Ive read about it on a Christmas gift thread. And, I think we have to start making it now like the Christmas Cake

1 ltr bottle of Vodka - remove about 1/4.
Fill with chosen sweets (boiled sweets are best, if you use skittles or chews you will need to skim off 'scum' afterwards)
Give larger sweets a good bashing, when I did Rhubard and Custard I'd smashed them into almost powder.
If using chocolate use about a 500g bar

Put lid back on and twist some cling film around it (just in case)

Put bottle in the top of the dishwasher and run a 70 degree daily cycle.

Take out and let it cool naturally

Bingo!!

(If you then put it in the freezer it wont go solid but will go v v thick like a liquer)"

This is how flavoured vodkas have been made for many, many moons. If you have ever been to Vodka Revolution Bar and had a test tube rack of their flavoured vodkas most of them are made this way

Now I need to know what flavours work best, nothing too common like bubblegum or my friends will suss me. Where to you get nice cheap bottles from to decant it into and, what standard of vodka does one use? will the four quid Polish fire water work?

What flavours have you had success with...and which are a really bad idea? Just thinking about Christmas present for diffiuclt to buy for sister in law...

Pear drops work well. So do jelly babies. I think someone has already said rhubarb and custards. Sherbert lemons and chocolate limes are also good. Oh, and so is Turkish delight.

Use any vodka you like, the label will soak off in the dishwasher and you can make your own one to put on so no one need know you used TescoValue

these flavours though are you able to use mixers or do you drink it like a shot? because, if thats the case they wont be suitable for anyone over 24!!

Skittles work just lovely but separate each colour first, get those Kilner-lidded type bottles, the little ones, and make a rainbow selection. We are pretty sure after extensive testing that the red ones made it stronger.

We never ran it through the dishwasher, just kept it in a cupboard for a while til the sweeties dissolved - as you can probably tell, we were students and didn't have a dishwasher!

Most will be good with lemonade or some with coke.

They are quite thick, more like a liqueur than a straight spirit really. You could drink them with lemonade or tonic I suppose.

But I've always felt that flavoured vodka was designed for irresponsible drinking.

Lighthouse, the general point is to get a 'sipping' vodka like a good Polish or Russian one - its kept in the freezer and you have a port-sized glass and sip it. If it is flavored well and cold enough it is gorgeous. You might need a halfway decent vodka, not the cleaning-your-walls basics but nothing fancy, and a spoonful of sugar helps all ills.

Lemonade or soda will go with pretty much all flavours as a mixer.

do you have to put it through a sieve?

Are there any sophisicated flavours? what about shoving a box of After Eights in?

Never heard of this but sounds most excellent. I expect it would be a nice addition to a vodka watermelon:
Take a watermelon, 'core' a section of flesh and skin, chop some of the flesh and keep the skin as a 'plug'. Every day for a minimum of 10 days and something up to a month, fill the hole with vodka. Keep it on a plate in the fridge for the duration. Following this process for a good couple of weeks will work well. When ready, cut up and scoff. Dead nice.
(We used one as a 'guess the weight' prize competition for a school fete - very popular but adults only!

I don't have a dishwasher atm I just crush the sweets up, and give the bottle a good shake twice a day. You can filter it through a clean tea towel just as well.

I'm going to make Parma Violet Vodka next.

Forgot to put, I made mine with fruit sherberts - separated out the different flavours, they were divine.

I've made some and it's very nice.

Would it be irresponsible to give my little brother a bottle of it for Xmas? He is 21 but a typical student, don't want him binge drinking it all and his mum coming after me!

You don't even need to put in the dishwasher if you have a little patience, just stick it in a kiln jar, and give it a shake each day, done in a few weeks.

So, yes, OP, you can make it with After Eights.

Werthers Original vodka is scrummy but tends to separate quite a bit. Few good shakes will sort it though.

I've just made 2 types - Worthers and liquorice. I didn't use the dishwasher, just divided a 1 litre bottle of cheap vodka between 2 empty water bottles. Added the sweets and then left for a week - shaking the bottles a few times a day when I passed.

I had to use my hand held blender with the liquorice. It's turned out quite syrupy but it's delicious.

I make Christmassy plum vodka. Loads of plums, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Delicious.

I pick my times to lay off the drink, all the fruity ones sound delish! I havn't got a dishwasher (I'm it) but if I did make it( by hand ) how long would I be able to keep it for just it's my birthday new years day and we are having a few people over on new years eve, would they keep till them or would I be better off making them nearer the time?
