Is that enough do you think?

Rachyandmeg · 20/11/2010 04:34

I suppose if its not on the credit card and you can really afford it then i guess its upto the parent how much is spent. I do think sometimes kids can get bratty from getting everything they ask for all the time. I think that more time spent with children though is more important than material things and teaching them values, helping others etc
Hi reformed character I read your posts and I think keep asking your son what he wants isn't going to do the situation any good. It seems to me he either just isn't the type to get excited about christmas, maybe some kids don't. Did he used to get excited in the past? Or if its not the case it sounds like he's maybe unhappy in some way maybe its the situation with the dad being depressed. Kids pick up vibes. Only thing he needs in tht case is love and quality time not material things.

ragged · 20/11/2010 06:43

I am also a bit Shock at the quantity of things people are buying -- I guess I just hate the idea of having to keep so much of it tidy afterwards! And I prefer single expensive gifts to so many little things. I don't give gifts year around, but I think we are fairly generous with pocket money (not according to DC, of course Wink.

I am slightly panicking that our Christmas will be a damp squib because I don't want or expect to buy much, aside from the big box for DS3's tractor, the pile under the tree will be teeny. My friends spend under a tenner for each child, though; we are profligate compared to them.

DS11: cash (his choice)

DD9: Getting ears pierced, Animal Alive toy from her brothers, cash that goes straight for music lessons (her choice).

DS6: Uno Star Wars... says he wants Star Wars Lego but he needs DS11's help to built it, so am not sure. Lots of cash, too (his choice).

DS2 (nearly 3): Ride on pedal Tractor (joint birthday present)

In Stockings they will have socks, a pen and notebook, chocolate, maybe a book. The three boys are getting The Clone Wars Season 2 from their sister, too.

Me: I want stuff out of the OxFam charity gifts catalog (train a teacher, etc). I suggested to DH a few household items that his relatives could buy (they like to give real things). I'd like a pressure washer, but I think we'll just buy that, I can't quite stomach asking for one as a Christmas present Grin.

DH: wants an ipod Docking station

becaroo · 20/11/2010 09:40

ragged my ds1 (7) asks for money for his birthday to spend on days out etc. (When he is older he may well ask for money for xmas too and I have no problem with that.) We went to center parcs this year for his birthday and he wants to go to Paris on eurostar next year!!!! I would rather spend money on that than on a party for 18/20 kids - ds1 isnt really bothered about parties.

I have bought far too much for my dc this year and do you know what??? I dont care!!

Grin

If people only want to spend £10 on their dc thats fine. When I was a child there were some christmases when we each had a selection box and thats it BUT we spent time together and had enough to eat.

I hope you and all your dc have a lovely xmas x

abgirl · 21/11/2010 08:15

DD (5.6)

Desk (not really Xmas present but being called that)
Dumbo DVD
Set of Rainbow Fairies books (v cheap from Costco)
Dolls bath set (Santa)
Toy Story DVD (Santa)
Stocking will be bell for her bike, bobbles, purse
Hairdryer (from GPs)
CD player (From aunt/uncle)
Will get some clothes, books etc from neighbours and friends

DS (almost 2)

Balance bike (from GPs)
Cycle helmet
Book
Ikea soft farm (Santa)
Stocking will be little car, book, soft toy
ELC My First Workbench (aunt/uncle)
As with DD will get clothes, books etc from others

We could probably afford to spend more but I really don't want to spoil them and am resisting getting on the DSi etc bandwagon as long as possible, and TBH DD hasn't asked for anything like that - all she wanted was 'stuff for her dolls' and new bobbles. DS loves playing with the toy kitchen, cleaning set etc that we got for DD so he doesn't need much - and its his birthday in January which will probably end up being lots of clothes for presents.

Kellunga · 22/11/2010 12:41

Goodness me, lots of presents going on here. I love it!! Stockings are the best bit, founds loads of great stuff for the stockings on www.lovelygifts.co.uk and Charlie & Lola breakfast set for DS1.

DD's(12) main present is an ICE watch, I admire the marketing team at ICE who have made a plastic watch seem worth £65... Hmm

Oldjolyon · 22/11/2010 19:21

DD1 (7) Is getting:
Second hand ipod touch (cost us £50)
Hannah Montana dressing up outfit,
Make your own lip balm,
Cheerleading wii game.

plus stocking bits

DD2 (4) is getting:
Wooden barbie dolls house
Furniture for dolls house
DS game

Plus stocking bits.

All DD1 asked for this year was the puppy training school and some nail polish.

Reformed - Have read your threads, and when my DD wants something really expensive like that, we make her save up for it. Why not offer to give some money for ipad for birthday / christmas, offer to help them do a car boot sale of old toys to get money and so on? My DD wanted a new computer last year (she had a really old one in her playroom, and it was too slow) so we said yes, but she had to save up for it. And she did (she got a little netbook). I think it helps them to respect their things too if they have to save for them.

alaskacoby · 23/11/2010 12:37

My teenage kids all have Ipods, bought for Christmas the year before last. At the time I felt quite guilty as they cost so much, but they have had so much use. They use them daily on the bus to and from school,on every journey (we are busy off somewhere most weekends), at home a great deal, for parties.... the list is endless. So although the initial outlay was a lot they are possibly the most used present we have ever bought.

Nickimiz · 27/11/2010 11:20

HELP ! I have a 12 year old boy who is just a nightmare to buy for - I've offered so far a BMX, laptop, Wii for his bedroom and all I get is no ! it's not that he's bratty or spoilt, he just really doesn't know what he wants and I need some ideas please. He's sport orientated - football especially but has all the kit etc for that, always outside not one to be sat inside in front of the telly.
So any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thankyou x

My dds will be getting next to nothing this year!

I don't feel too guilty though, I'm making the most of it whilst they are still young enough not to care (5 and 3). I'm sure by the time they get to KS2/secondary school they will be demanding Uggs, GHDs and iPads with the best of them!
