Would Jesus have known who he was as a baby?

FloralGums · 01/01/2025 21:52

I was pondering this following a sermon at Midnight Mass.
Was he a totally human baby or do you think he was more than that? Was he sentient?
I was thinking of the visit of the shepherd and Magi, and the flight from Herod and if he was aware.
When do you think he became aware of his true self?
I was hoping there might be someone knowledgeable or with some insights from clerical training or something.

For clarity (incase this comes up in Active) I am posting this on Christian Mumsnetters, which is primarily intended for the use of Christians. Yes I am aware it the internet and anyone can post etc etc but I am not interested in atheists posting about sky fairies or flying spaghetti monsters so won’t be responding to those posts. Feel free to start your own discussion on Philosophy/Religion.

But scriptures are papers written by men.
Jesus is just another more modern version of similar deities that exit all over the world... all based on the astrological movements of the sun.
Why don't you actually read into it? It's fascinating to see the historical links over the thousands of years between the stories/myths of different cultures from around the world years ago.
I agree that the 'son of god' is very important but in the real world, this is the sun.

I'd argue not - what other deity has resurrected from the dead? Only one - Jesus Christ.

drivinmecrazy · 02/01/2025 10:08

Not a practicing Christian but I'm really enjoying reading this thread.

Certainly gives food for thought.

I greatly respect and even envy those that believe without question.

I see no need to come on and post things determined to undermine that belief.

Every day is a learning day and I'm all the better for learning from those to whom the bible is their truth.

Fascinating!

tellmesomethingtrue · 02/01/2025 10:25

Yeah, sure there are. Here are 5 other deities with similar stories to Jesus:

Dionysus (Indian)

Attis (Greek)

Osiris (Egyptian)

Mithra (Europe)

Adonis (Syrian)

tellmesomethingtrue · 02/01/2025 10:26

@AlteredStater - that list is for you.

"I thought Jesus did exist and that is agreed"

No. The historiography of Jesus is still a subject for debate.

If you’re seeking a theological debate there is another board better suited for that purpose.

I was simply responding to a poster who was saying she thought that the historical existence of Jesus was fact. Not a theological debate-just a correction of a point of fact.

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 02/01/2025 10:32

To my Christian sisters and brothers on this thread, I have reported the disrespect and disruption thus far to @MNHQ … just take heart and strength from the fact that our GOD sees the secrets of all minds and hearts and His Judgement is true. 🙏

The historicity of the existence of Jesus of Nazareth is not in dispute by any respectable academics, nor has it been for many decades. If you wish to raise this as a matter for debate please use the appropriate forum, as below.

I just wanted to offer my support to the Christians on this board. I am so sorry that some people have taken this thread as an opportunity to mock and question your religion. I have my own beliefs but they are irrelevant to this board as the purpose of it is for Christian MN to support and chat with one another.

Tagging in MNHQ apparently doesn't do anything though. You either need to report the thread/post or post in Site Stuff.

I hope MNHQ do take action though and that you all can continue your conversation undisturbed.

@Nessastats
Please go and read some proper theology...the existence of Jesus as the incarnation is up for debate; the existence of a Jewish prophet called Jesus is not.
He is not a made up character, there is substantial evidence of his physical existence e.g Tacitus & Flavius Josephus. At the very least the evidence of the effect of the ethical teaching which led to the proto- Christian church is obvious.
Can I suggest looking at the work of Alister McGrath, John Drane, and Peter Vardy? My GCSE and A-Level students can easily access this material so I shouldn't think it would be a problem for you.
And before you lay into me for echo chambers etc, I am an atheist RS teacher with a specialism in the study of religions & non religious belief systems. I have no agenda apart from trying to educate people to a level of better understanding.

balloonsintrees · 02/01/2025 10:49

@FloralGums

In response to the OP, some of the 'forgotten' gospels that were left out of the canon may be of interest.
Look for the infancy narrative of James and the childhood stories of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas. A fascinating insight particularly when considered in light of why they were disregarded from the making of the Bible in the 4th & 5th centuries.

I reported every disrespectful comment as it appeared, which seemed to be ineffective, hence the tags.

Very glad to have your support.
Thanks again xx

It's so disappointing that people haven't followed the statement at the top of this forum.

You sound really interesting. My sons’ RS teacher was also atheist but expert, it made for a very balanced and interesting course.

You should do an AMA.

There’s nothing respectful about coming to a Christian board and asserting that our Lord was “mentally ill” and that His mother had “mental health issues.”

Please use the Philosophy/Religion board if you wish to discuss these theories.

How can you absolutely know that jesus, his mother or his father didn't didn't have psychological or mental isdues though? You can't.

CurlewKate · 02/01/2025 11:06

@LeaningOnTheEverlastingArms "The historicity of the existence of Jesus of Nazareth is not in dispute by any respectable academics, nor has it been for many decades."

I won't continue the discussion- but this statement is not true. There are good scholarly arguments for both sides- but no certainty either way.

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 02/01/2025 09:40

@ueberlin2030 You are being disruptive and disrespectful to this board and its Christian participants. I am sure you are getting off on it in some way. Again, please see the guidance at the top of this board. In case you do not know or are being wilfully ignorant, I suggest you look up the definition of Christian : on this board Christ’s divinity is not up for debate. Please take your posturing and desire for argument to a relevant board. Thank you. You can stamp your foot and claim entitlement to say what you want, where you want … carry on with your puerile antics from your keyboard if that is what pleases you. GOD knows your heart.

I'm not the one foot stamping.

ramonaquimby · 01/01/2025 22:44

But aren't you creating your own echo chamber?

Take it up with Mumsnet HQ.

here’s their guidance
“This board exists primarily for the use of Christian Mumsnetters. Others are welcome to post but please be respectful. For theological debates, please visit our Philosophy/religion forum.

This board is for Christians- and others- to respectfully converse.

As you can clearly see today it’s been used to deliberately antagonise us and to criticise our beliefs in very disrespectful ways. Other religions have their boards too, where such behaviour is not permitted, nor should it be.

Based on some of the 'accounts' of jesus and mary I'd not be surprised. The point is that we just do not know.
