Would Jesus have known who he was as a baby?

FloralGums · 01/01/2025 21:52

I was pondering this following a sermon at Midnight Mass.
Was he a totally human baby or do you think he was more than that? Was he sentient?
I was thinking of the visit of the shepherd and Magi, and the flight from Herod and if he was aware.
When do you think he became aware of his true self?
I was hoping there might be someone knowledgeable or with some insights from clerical training or something.

For clarity (incase this comes up in Active) I am posting this on Christian Mumsnetters, which is primarily intended for the use of Christians. Yes I am aware it the internet and anyone can post etc etc but I am not interested in atheists posting about sky fairies or flying spaghetti monsters so won’t be responding to those posts. Feel free to start your own discussion on Philosophy/Religion.

if he did exist....

Of course He existed, what year is it? 2025 AD. AD = Anno Domini. The Year of Our Lord. Now who could that possibly be? Not Elon Musk. It's Jesus Christ. Why do you think that is? Because He truly existed. Whether you believe He's the Son of God or not is another matter, but He absolutely did exist. Why have a calendar that separates before and after Christ if he simply didn't exist at all?

I stand by my comment.
Also, it's possible that the 'jesus' we hear so much about wasn't even one person.

Optigan · 02/01/2025 09:06

I hope you don't mind if I join to 'lurk' on this thread - this is a really interesting question.

"I thought Jesus did exist and that is agreed"

No. The historiography of Jesus is still a subject for debate.

🙄 Not on this board it isn’t.

All religions teach a false jesus concept though. It's ridiculous for anyone to assume their particular interpretation is the correct and only valid one.

Indeed.
Speaking of love but only when it's the correct kind of love. Many christians reject that nowadays, thankfully.

LetThemEatFake · 02/01/2025 08:48

I assume you're joking because if Jesus existed he would say it's the year 5785. Also, as there's no year 0, was Jesus was born a year after Jesus's birth?

Absolutely not joking. Your date would be wrong anyway as Jesus existed with the Father before Creation so it's impossible to pin any date on that.

There's no 0 year because of the Calendar system that was developed at that time, when there wasn't a concept of zero. The years go directly from 1 B.C. to 1 A.D.

I’m no longer a Christian but it is an interesting question.

The pushing of boundaries and low level “naughtiness” that is a normal part of development particularly in toddlerhood - can that have sat alongside being divine and free of sin? Maybe he was just an uncommonly “angelic” baby and toddler. But then his actions when he was 12 in the temple do show a sort of defiance.

The account shows that He submitted to Joseph and Mary following His 3 day absence in the Temple.

I think “defiance” is an inappropriate description of His behaviour.

By all means have a faith, but do not assume the right to call it absolute. Faith can never be absolute.

I don't think there's an entry requirement for the board, as long as discussion is respectful anyone can join in.

The disparaging and inaccurate comment about our holy scriptures was not respectful.

🙄🙄 I am sure it gives you a sense of self-worth to speak such unBiblical nonsense about our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus. Try saying the same on the Muslim Mumsnetters forum, not that I would encourage you to take such disrespectful comments to there.

Edited

I don't think it's unbiblical. I do often think Jesus was bipolar. Many of the best people are!
It would explain his strength, empathy and quick thinking. I doubt he had ASD.
I hope you don't think these things are negatives. That is pretty bad in this day and age. And not what Jesus would have thought. He was open minded and warm hearted.

Again, there is no proof that the christian concept of god or jesus is any more accurate than the muslim one. I thought most christians knew and accepted that - faith isn't based on proof.

To the other Christians on here please do not suggest in any way that other posts that relate to Islam are treated better and that there is a safe space in Muslim MNetters. They also deal with a lot of hatred and it isn’t all taken down immediately or sometimes not removed at all.

Fink · 02/01/2025 09:24

The traditional Catholic understanding is that Jesus had both human and divine knowledge, this is necessary if we're not going to fall into any heresies about what it means to be fully human and fully divine. His human knowledge includes what all humans know instinctively, what he could learn through experience and teaching, and prophetic knowledge. In these, he wasn't born with an adult understanding of his own person and mission. His divine knowledge is that of God himself and has all the attributes of divine knowledge (omniscience, for a start), but isn't always able to fit into limited human terms, which is why he can say that he didn't know the day or the hour, because he knows them only as God. We believe that he must know who he is from eternity, but that in his human nature he was capable of gradually learning more about this.
