Which toddler books do you loathe?

I asked for books for DD2 for Christmas and got some lovely ones that she enjoys but there’s one I absolutely hate - Dear Zoo. I know it’s one of the more well known ones but the fact that the ungrateful little kid sends back all the animals back and gets a perfect puppy at the end grinds my gears 😂

Are there any other books to stay clear of? This is a light hearted thread btw

I hate how all the animals are male in Dear Zoo, I change them. In fact whenever the animal characters are just automatically male I change them at least half the time.

The Smartest Giant in Town irritates me because scarf and giraffe don’t rhyme in my accent - that’s been done to death on here so I know I’m not alone.

I can’t stand the ones based on TV characters like the Peppa Pig and Bing ones, however DD loves them and would chose them every time if I didn’t hide them redirect her. It’s not because I’m particularly precious about TV, it’s just that they’re usually crap stories and badly written.

Haha same!

for me it’s the Julia Donaldson books, DD is allowed to choose her bedtime story and they just seem to go on forever. When she chooses one my heart sinks a bit!

Yika · 24/01/2023 19:08

Really can’t stand dr Seuss.

also found Mog the Forgetful Cat mind-numbing.

Love Julia Donaldson though!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 24/01/2023 19:08

I hate the Paddington books and have hidden them. There are other books that I have said are a daddy book and I refuse to read - they are mainly old sexist books about bears.

justwantobeamum · 24/01/2023 19:11

Yes to smartest giant in town, do they rhyme in any accent? I’m sure there’s something similar in the snail on the whale one too!!

Marcipex · 24/01/2023 19:11

I can’t stand Thomas the bloody tank engine. I always hid them.

SunsetBlue · 24/01/2023 19:11

I loathe Dear zoo for the same reasons as a PP - all the characters are male! I change them to female. I also change loads of characters to girls if there aren't enough in a story.

Don't like the Mr Men books - I received the whole gift set for my kids birthday and after an acceptable amount of time gave them to charity. Again, because all the characters are male, apart from the helper or the cleaner etc.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/01/2023 19:13

Going on a bear hunt- I detest having to make swooshing noises, it should have a note “only for nursery settings” on it.
finally got rid of our copy and then a dear friend bought it for my youngest at Christmas

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/01/2023 19:14

I love Julia Donaldson but cannot figure out the rhyme in Tatty McTatt- impossible to read

MissFlimpkin · 24/01/2023 19:14

Thomas the tank engine. The mr men books. Anything with super hero's these days - horrible, boring.
Love Julia Donaldson, Roald Dahl, Charlie and his stinky socks- I forget the author. Anything silly like 101 bums, great fun, nothing rude but a bit silly to giggle too.

Prinnny · 24/01/2023 19:15

Snail and the whale…controversial but I think it’s shit!

Mrschocolatepie · 24/01/2023 19:15

Scarf and giraffe do rhyme in my London accent 😂 What doesn’t rhyme is in Oi Frog or one of those books, when elephants sit on smelly pants.

Thesearmsofmine · 24/01/2023 19:16

Guess how much I love you. The dad constantly competing with his child, really annoys me.

scrivette · 24/01/2023 19:16

Scarf and giraffe rhyme for me (London).

I don't like the Mr Men books as I think they are badly written and whilst I don't mind reading Peppa some of them are badly written, actually most tv to book stories are very badly written.

I have high expectations though, I compare them to Shirley Hughes books which I LOVE reading.

stayathomer · 24/01/2023 19:17

Uh oh- I love Dear Zoo AND The Smartest Giant In Town!! Personally I don’t get the hype of we’re going on a bear hunt or the tiger who came to tea and was gutted we bought both without checking them out properly first!!

scrivette · 24/01/2023 19:17

I agree, I have hidden the book as it really annoys me!

notacooldad · 24/01/2023 19:17

All of them.
Seriously hated them.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 24/01/2023 19:19

The rainbow fish- and it's on so many best books for under 5's. Possibly American though.

whattodo2019 · 24/01/2023 19:19

Thomas the Tank Engine- i gave all of them away...
Rainbow Fairies were also banned...
Loved Julia Donaldson books, Dr Seuss, Each Peach Pear Plum, Dear Zoo, Burglar Bill, The Tiger that came
to Tea, loved Peppa Pig...
Oh bring back those days .....

Omg yes! It doesn’t flow but I feel under pressure to get it right! Same with bloody Tiddler

Omgosh I always thought that! Like why are you flexing on a child like that mr nutbrown hare?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/01/2023 19:21

Oh my son just got the tiger who came to tea for Xmas and both he and enjoy it. We also like monkey puzzle by Julia Donaldson.

I don't like ones with not much story like fireman Sam or another one we have about building a scy scraper. It's all "this is a cement mixer, this is a bulldozer" etc etc zzzzz

Krustykrabpizza · 24/01/2023 19:21

Dear zoo is crap. It's just not how zoos work.
DD has quite a few crap ones we've accumulated over the years.clara the cookie fairy is a particular load of shite

Krustykrabpizza · 24/01/2023 19:22

Oh I agree about mr men books, badly written and don't flow well at all

pastapestoparmesan · 24/01/2023 19:22

The rainbow fish - if you want people to like you, you have to give them your cool stuff. What a crap message to give to kids!
