Rearfacing Car Seats for 9 months to 4 years- Please read and spread the word

Please please spread the word about rear facing car seats for 9 months to 4 years.

?In Sweden between July 2006 and November 2007 not one child under the age of six was killed in a car crash. Children in Sweden sit rear facing until the age of four.

205 children under 5 are seriously injured in the UK every year and a further 21 are killed, while in cars (the AA).

Two thirds of child fatalities in the under?four age group in the UK occur in cars (the AA).?

Rear facing car seats for this age group have now been proven to be 5 TIMES SAFER than forward facing.

If this isn't enough have a look at these:

The other day I walked past a mum having her car fitted outside a well known retailer, and I felt so sad for her that the staff would be giving her the standard "no seat is safer than any other", when that is total rubbish There is a vast vast difference in the safety of these seats.

I just really want to spread the word to other mums and let them see the facts for themselves. (The government and retailers are of the view that UK parents don't want to buy these seats - and therefore don't tell us about them - incidentally there are places across the country now starting to stock them...)

I've done the research, and there is no way in this world I would now get a forward facing car seat. Yes they can be slightly more pricey- but generally about the same price as the higher end forward facing ones- and to be honest, I'm of the view that if you can possibly afford it, safety is the one thing you should skimp on

Anyway, if anyone wants more info, please just give me a shout, also there is loads of great info on: www.rearfacing.co.uk

happy car seat hunting

My almost 3 year old is rear-facing too.

It's bordering on criminal that Halfords, Mothercare, John Lewis etc don't stock the RF seats and don't publicise them. The manufacturers, who already stock in the UK, should also get their acts together. Thanks heavens they are becoming much easier to get in this country.

john lewis do stock a rear facing group 1 seat

Ahhh, that's good news. They never used to. I see they have the Recaro Polaric which is a start.

They sell lots of Maxi Cosi car seats, but I see not the Mobi which is the rearwards facing to 55lbs seat they do.

Hi, I'm feeling very confused as most companies seem to sell rear facing car seats until 13 kgs, where can I get a reasonably priced & fitted rear facing car seat that will last my nine month old daughter until she is 4 or 5 years old?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

aswellasyou · 13/07/2011 22:47

scats, you might be better off asking in a new thread. If you can't stretch to £200+, Volvo sell the Britax Multi Tech rebranded as a Volvo seat for £130. You'd need to go to a Volvo dealership to get one. If you can afford £200, this is a very popular one. It goes up to 25kg from 9kg and can face both ways. It's one of only a few seats with a 5 point harness to 25kg.

The Volvo seat goes up to 25kg too, I just checked.

I love rearfacing car seats. My 2 year old is rearfacing in a britax two way elite and will be reafacing till he is 4 and then forward facing and harnessed until he outgrows the seat which will be along time as he is only a titch ;-) I love the seat so much that we bought 3 of them! one for my car, one for my mums car and one for DH's mums car.

I would never set a foot there. They are crap at the whole rearfacing & forwardfacing thing unless they have changed staff.
