Camping

Our UK Camping forum has all the information you need on finding the right equipment for your tent or caravan.

I wonder if the camping topic should be expanded?

To include outdoorsy stuff too, like walking, proper walking with walking boots on and an OS map in your extremely goretex coat that has an OS map pocket. Maybe climbing too (not that I'm a climber) and other outside activities and kit that don't quite fit into sport and exercise or a holiday as such.

See I want to ask about proper walking sandals, you know with hearty straps and anti fungal properties. I can't ask in style and beauty, or in sport, the dog people were helpful on the wellies front but I,m not sure sandals comes under the jurisdiction of dogs.

Products makes me think of micro fibre mops.

It could make this topic could be a bit more exciting and happening through the winter months when it gets a bit sad and quiet. We could discuss circular walks in the lake district and dry stone walls.

What do you think?

SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 15:49

How would you progress from walking to hiking?

Hiking is a bit more full on grr [pec clench].

SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 15:52

Engelbert I think if you are merely walking, whether it be up a hill or not then you are walking. Hiking is MORE than walking. There is a vibe about a hiker, get outta my way I've got to make it by nightfall, thing going on.

OP posts:
SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 15:57

Not hiking that should be

Am confusing myself now.

Shall we talk about rambling?

OP posts:
SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 15:58

Oh God,

Just forget the last post I am talking shite.

OP posts:
SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 16:00

And there is trekking too.

Walking
Hill walking
Rambling
Trekking
Ambling
Wombling

According to Muriel Gray you have Ramblers, Scramblers and Danglers. I'm not sure where the mountain biking types fit in though!

Fennel · 02/03/2011 16:10

I like the New Zealand word, Tramping.

Hill walking is a bit archaic, it's what Topsy and Tim did back in the 60s.

DuplicitousBitch · 02/03/2011 16:18

maybe i like archaic!

rambling makes me think of janet street porter, which is never a good thing

SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 16:23

Lol Engelbert. You need to get yourself into a hiking/walking group. Loads of them round here all led by earnest types waving their arms about and pointing at sandstone ridges.

Tramping is an excellent word and the Kiwis do it so well

What the chuff is a dangle? (sounds rude)

OP posts:
SlubberKongWubba · 02/03/2011 16:24

Dangler ?

OP posts:
notwavingjustironing · 02/03/2011 16:26

we need gaiters and suchlike.

I pondered gaitors, but figured that reptiles would struggle to amble/ramble/womble or even dangle.

See I'm a high heels and make up kinda gal in real life, but I completely embrace the flat sandal/kagoul look when camping which my mates find completely baffling.

This nice weather is making my wanderlust rise.

I have no gaiters. I have muddy cords (brown) instead that I don everyday for the dog walk. Fake uggs are a TERRIBLE footwear choice. So impractical and sponge like.

notwaving yesterday was just lovely, so sunny and spring is coming. Tra laaaaaa. today not so much.

I have Merrell Chamaeleons- they are completely non-stinky, but I haven't walked that far in them yet.

The best outdoors forum is Outdoors Magic- it's great, funny, and quite a lot of women on there too- was there for years before I discovered mn!

Engelbert-have you tried a Farming supply shop/riding shop like Mole Valley Farmers for shoes? Lots of pull on shoes with loops etc that are hard wearing and waterproof but again, S and B would have a fit!! I'm trying to think of brands-if you can bear it CRocs do some great boots lots of my vet friends have.

I love this topic so wouldn't want it ruined-it's my safe haven Grin

Danglers- are they climbers? I've certainly done more dangling than climbing when ever I try it :)

You are all very funny here. I would like an expanded outdoors topic: I can't join Camping threads because you would all intimidate me with your Proper Equipment. When we go camping we look like a refugee family and I always expect UN humanitarian teams to turn up. I bought a cheap marquee extension to our tent that blew away whilst we were on a walk. Some of the proper campers had to lash it down to save their equipment from being crushed.
