What a horrible, article to write in National Breastfeeding Awareness week.

And using the case of that suicidal woman in the US to have a pop at breastfeeding advocates in the UK.

'It's possible that if she had sought help earlier, the tragedy might have been avoided - she was a first-time mother living in a foreign city, clearly needing all the support she could get - but my suspicion is that the lactation counsellor might only have made things worse.' FGS what rubbish.

I really don't understand the arguement that advocating what is best for baby and trying to support women by helping them successfully bf is somehow getting at women who ff.

This obsession with breastfeeding trivialises the issue IMO. I think that if she did jump, rather than fall from the tower block there is a wider issue regarding the detection of mental illness in the postnatal period, and the care and support offered to women who are unwell (suicide is the leading cause of maternal morbidity in the UK). But so much easier to write some lazy articles about breastfeeding instead...

This woman clearly has her own issues and unfortunately gets to present them as journalism.

and lack of sleep is a feature of new motherhood weather you bf or bottlefeed. My sister-in -law carried her crying babies around at night for hours waiting for the time she was due a feed. At least mine never cried as they always had my breasts in their mouth. Bottlefeeding is not the solution to sleepnessness.

It's also horrible that she purports to have insight into the poor dead mother's head at the time of her fall.

They are aiming for the 50+ age bracket and a lot of them were told not to BF. She is giving the readership what they want.

Also (and I know I'm preaching to the converted) I found bf in the long term much, much easier than if I had ff. Yet I have never seen an article saying how, once your baby gets the hang of it bfing is really easy and convienent. You'd think it was the hardest thing in the world and that we are all total mayrters to the cause wouldn't you.

Breast is best, yet another urban myth. Unless a woman is in rude health, breast is not best as babies can become starved of vital nutrients. Women should stop listening to these breast feeding fanatics and do what they think best and are most comfortable with. Formula milk will gaurantee your baby will get the nutrients it needs whereas breast feeding will not, and is dependant on the health of the mother.

You may like to ask WHO is the fanatics here. Also agree that BF is much easier in the long-run.

Daisy Goodwin has real issues about breastfeeding.

She produced the programme 'Bringing up baby' with the vile Claire Verity and protrayed an uneducated bullying charlaton as a guru who got the baby sleeping through the night on day one due to bottlefeeding!

She has never read, or if has ignores, any proper research about infant nutrition or care which just illustrates how the Media has power without responsibility and is probably the reason our country is in the mess it is in.

Ditsy, yes they do! Although to be fair I don't think most people believe it to that extent, but I have heard a lot of people say things like if a woman smokes or her diet is full of rubbish that she would be better off formula feeding. I was told by HVs that my milk wouldn't be good enough if I wasn't eating properly (I have a tendency to skip breakfast.. and lunch. I don't mean to, I just forget to eat ) Luckily I had MN to put me right and he is huge now - but I know I need to put some weight on for my own sake.
