Nestle and the way they operate on Bangladesh. From today's Guardian

Goodness me, I fear what someone would have to do to make tiktok go bonkers. You keep your cool long past the point where I would be shaking someone by their (virtual) lapels.

(Hmmm, was it perhaps some sort of 'BFC' person?)

tiktok · 15/05/2007 23:33

It was someone talking about breastfeeding, NQC, and she knew f* all about it, not that that stopped her doling out advice about it or parading her stoopid opinins on it.

Then she took it to another site (not another thread, another site!) and everyone there slagged us off

It was fun ....

moondog · 15/05/2007 23:37

Really heartened to see that this link has provoked so much intelligent debate.
I have to confess to having done no more than skim the article as am in a bit of a state at the mo.
Loads of work, dh been for weeks, missing him like mad..
Will finish me off......

sorry to hear you're under the cosh, moony.

and tiktok, was it a 'qualified' person, was it? what site did she take it too. [pathetic]

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2007 23:43

erk. 'take it to?'

moondog · 15/05/2007 23:45

It will get better thanks Aitch.
Off to Caribbean next weeek (although doubtless rampant formula marketing will get me hot under t'collar!)
It was that maternity nurse wasn't it TT?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2007 23:47

what maternity nurse?

and [seethe with ] at the caribbean. hadn't pictured you in deckwear, moondog.

tiktok · 15/05/2007 23:48

Yes it was

moondog · 15/05/2007 23:49

Oooh,you'd be surprised Aitch.
Have been known to relax and take a small medicinal snifter on occasion.
Boden summer wardrobe and Crocs ready.....

It was some woman offering daft advice to all and sundry.
Tiktok saw her off with a flea in her ear.

AitchTwoOh · 15/05/2007 23:51

was it that fabulous woman who'd done a weekend bfing course and was talking out of her arse? i can't actually remember her name so have no idea if she's speaking to me or not.

Twinklemegan · 15/05/2007 23:57

I remember that one too Aitch.

moondog · 15/05/2007 23:57

lol
Reminds me of the parent who asked a colleague (fellow salt) if speech and language therapy was an evening course available at local tech as night class as she quite fancied doing it as a job.

LOL Moony!

Come on Tikkers.....which other site????

tiktok · 16/05/2007 00:10

Aitch, I had forgotten about that one!

Make it three times I have gone bonkers, then

In fact, I have never lost it on mumsnet - bonkers for me is being relentlessly and boringly persistent over and over and over.

can't tell you the other site, VVV - it was a nannies' one, that's all I remember.

3andnomore · 16/05/2007 07:20

The Breastfeeding calender sounds fabulous!
Shame I am not bf anymore....hohum..!
Tiktok...what is it about Maternity Nurses, eh! I actually looked into the Qualificatiosn that are necessary, and found out there are non really...shocking or what....!

whomovedmychocolate · 16/05/2007 07:26

Aitch - you are a star. I'm just tired and confused!

MuminBrum · 16/05/2007 08:47

I'm going to East Africa for a few days (work trip) and will look out for formula advertising while I'm there in case anyone's interested.

tiktok · 16/05/2007 09:41

3and - maternity nurse is one of those non-protected jobs, so anyone can call themselves a maternity nurse (unlike, say, doctor, or midwife) whether they have done any training or not.

I think SWMNBN calls herself a maternity nurse, for instance.

Not that I think gaining qualifications is any guarentee of knowing what one is talking about!

'Breastfeeding counsellor' is another non-protected term, so anyone can call themselves that, too, but I think it behoves people who use the term for themselves to make sure they are properly qualified, otherwise mothers get even more confused about who helps with what

Ooh - I remember that 'disagreement' tiktok - you were relentlessly calm and polite, other poster was a bit obtuse, and no-one else could get what she was on about!

3andnomore · 16/05/2007 09:57

yup a certain person carries the title of Maternity Nurse...hence me looking into it what that actually means...and apparently it means nothing really...lol!
You are right of course, just because people have a certain training doesn't always mean they are any good, lol!
As for untrained people calling themself BFC's...well...that would just be awful...I mean, I know more about bf then most other people I know in real life, but I would never claim to be a BFC or anything....!
I actually did look into becoming a BFC, but it was one of those things that I then didn't do...there are many of those...

tiktok · 16/05/2007 10:05

Muminfife - NCT do a nice tear off sheet on positioning and attachment

Training to be a bfc - any of the four vol. orgs do good training. They all take about 2+ years. NCT trains to externally-accredited Diploma level. People who want something a bit quicker and less extensive have options, too, and all the vol orgs have some sort of peer supporter training which takes about 12 weeks.

My personal feeling is the 2 and 3 day courses offered by UNICEF, while good as a top-up in bf knowledge for healthcare professionals, do not allow for the development of insight, listening skills and personal awareness needed, which come with time and practice (though some HCPs may already have these skills).
