The coolest public breastfeeding ever...

Jenkeywoo · 06/04/2007 18:35

Today we went to a farm park and there is an adventure playground bit - I saw a toddler come down a giant slide, followed by a mum with babe in arms... who was breastfeeding! I was so impressed and I told her so. Later I saw the same lady and another breastfeeding in the sandpit, so I joined them and I have to say it is lovely breastfeeding in public when you're not the only one. So what's the coolest breastfeeding you have seen/done? I think the giant slide deserves a medal - wouldn't fancy it with my big girl now as any excitement and she spins her head round taking my nipple with it.. ouch.

Not particularly inventive or unusual, but my most enjoyable public breastfeed for DS was whilst having afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel in Brighton surrounded by blue rinses and blazers. Nobody batted an eyelid.

It is not the richer you are or where you live, the stats. indicate that it is maternal ed. and age that matters most here in the UK, so you can be piss poor and live in a dump of a city, but if you are over 30 and have a degree, you are MORE likley to bf than posh or jordan (who have lots of money but no ed.) living in Kensington.

and it is not just some countries that have a better bf rate than the UK, almost ALL countries outside the industrilaised world have a better bf rate than the UK (at initiating as well as past 6 months), I think I saw some global rates on WHO or UNICEF websites, very interesting

All types of public transport - plane, train, bus.

Restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, parks, swimming pools.

I'll get my norks out anywhere.

Have just stopped bf nearly 19 mths old two days ago and hearing these stories makes me want to go and bf her again but i wont as we have now defo stopped. Will in 6 months have anotehr one to feed. Really miss not feeding in public as well as last bf was when she was 14 mths and was going of to a razorlight concert so mum was taking her home on the train for bed when we went to on to the concert. I used to bf anywhere and actually got even more confident after going to Greece. Have bf on the train, plane, zoo, park, restaurants and cafes and everywhere when we went to greece and in a lovely private function room at the the theatre durign teh interval.

I have never bf on a slide and that is very impressive.

I've said this before. A friend of mine breastfed her dd at the altar in a white wedding dress while getting married

DimpledThighs · 07/04/2007 13:59

belgo - that is really wonderful, she sounds ace!

tibsy · 07/04/2007 17:21

what a fab thread and giant slide bftastic i think!!!
walking home from town yesterday, sun shining, dd getting tired and in need of getting out of pushchair and having a bit of comfort, so sat down under a tree on the green and bf. was lovely

trixymalixy · 07/04/2007 23:12

This is a fab thread!! Am amazed at the woman on the slide!

Did my first bf in public yesterday, felt quite proud of myself.

Can I ask what type of slings those of you who bf pushing trolleys etc use?

BlackCountryLass · 07/04/2007 23:38

llareggub (sp? sorry!) re: your question about getting negative reactions. I was sitting in Debenhams cafe in Merry Hill, Dudley last week, telling my pregnant friend who hopes to breastfeed that I'd never had anything but positive comments, when the two women who were sitting opposite us began whispering when I started feeding my DS. After about 30 seconds they got up, took their trays etc to another table and sat with their backs to me. It was very strange.

That's the only negative one I have had though, lots of very sweet people tell me how nice it is to see breastfeeding in public.

Trinityrhino · 07/04/2007 23:39

Sorry can't tell you about slings, I was just holding 4 day old Gecko with one arm and pushing the trolley with the other.

trixymalixy, when dd2 was smaller I used to carry her in a Huggababy ring sling and would bf her whilst walking about. The sling was great.

I'm another one who has bfed in a cathedral. Two of my most memorable bfs were:

bfing dd1 whilst watching a film in a planetarium when she was about 18 months old.

bfing dd2 whilst floating on a giant rubber ring, going round a circuit at a water park in Gran Canaria

weeonion · 08/04/2007 07:09

i love reading these - 1st wee one due in over a week - was looking forward to bf and these stories have made me even more excited at the thought!

sniff · 08/04/2007 07:14

I recently breastfed my dd all the way through my sister being on stage at am dram a few weeks ago

because all though she wasnt crying she was trying to talk to every one 10 months!!

I know I souldnt have taken her but she is very attached at the moment she had a great time anyway and I managed to watch the whole performance !!!

everyone said how quiet she had been little did they know!!!

ProfYaffle · 08/04/2007 07:32

Good Lord, I've bf anywhere and everywhere. Most recent was at Bressingham steam Museum, sitting on a bench on Walmington on Sea High Street and then again on a miniature steam train. Said to dh at the time 'this is another place to add to my list of novelty bf locations'.

I've only ever had positive responses from other people, I was approached by a member of staff at Bressingham and thought 'here we go' but she just asked if I was warm enough and I could use their office if not.

Respect to the slide lady though, think I'd be too concerned about chompage to that myself!

melpomene · 08/04/2007 09:05

The bfing on a slide story also reminded me of this clip .

Trinityrhino · 08/04/2007 09:10

WOW I wouldn't be able to do a headstand without a crane helping me, let alone stay up while the baby did that...so cute

tibsy · 08/04/2007 09:40

oh wow!!!!!!!!!! am very of that talent and ahhhhhhhhhhh, how sweet was that?

theUrbanDryadLovesCremeEggs · 08/04/2007 10:20

that is soooooo cute!

ok - slightly off the subject, but how many of you would b up for an en masse pulic bf? the legislation to make it illegal to harass a bf-ing mother has not been passed in Parliament, and i think we need to raise awareness within the government about bf-ing, make them aware that we're not going to go away if they ignore us! i was thinking of one weekend in London, getting as many bf-ing mothers together somewhere like Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park. i figure, we could sit and have a picnic, and the LO's could have their picnic too! get the press involved, make it news. not militant, just chilled, relaxed and peaceful.

whaddya think?

weeonion · 08/04/2007 11:34

real shame that a mass feed-in woudl be needed. as bad as things can be inscotland - at least we have the legislation now to protect bf-ing mums...

DimpledThighs · 08/04/2007 18:47

UrbanDryad - that is the coolest idea, it would be so much fun - I would have loved it but ds is 7 and dd is 4 so I cannot join you but would probably come along to support such a thing.

Bfing is very important to me and I think it is so hard to do and the more obsticles that are put up the harder it would be.

theUrbanDryadLovesCremeEggs · 08/04/2007 19:35

anyone else??

i'll start a proper thread about it....

theUrbanDryadLovesCremeEggs · 08/04/2007 19:46

new thread here

Jenkeywoo · 08/04/2007 21:55

ooo that video is lovely! thank you. I've forwarded it to all my friends.

I used to feed my daughter on a weekly basis at the ice hockey. She went to her first match at six days old and was fed as and when the need arose. Thus she has been fed while I've been stood up chanting and waving my free arm about when we scored, and has partaken in a fair few ref bashing moments with well times burps and trumps
