What did you say when asked to stop BFing in public?

I need a list of witty retorts to throw at neanderthals who might be upset by the sight of me BFing. You know the ones I mean... the stuff you never think of at the time.
I'm going to memorise them cos I think they're going to come in handy. I want to BF in public as much as possible, if only to see how long it takes to be asked to leave the premises.
BTW, I managed it at the rugby club the other week.Grin No-one minded.

Was it during the slow movement of Beethoven's Ninth?

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2006 17:47

No, but I was quite near the front and the percussionist definitely clocked me doing it and did a comedy double take :o

hunkermunkfish · 26/04/2006 17:55

So've I, FAZ. Toddler was a bit surprised, I must say. Wasn't mine Wink Grin

Ah, I wondered where ds had got to that time. Saved me giving him a sausage roll in his buggy on the way home, anyway, so cheers for that.

Another take on this...how do you react when you see a Mum breast-feeding? I can never decide whether to give a big beaming smile (she may think I'm insane or a potential baby snatcher) but I really want to give off a "hey! cool! I did that! I think it's brill and definitely don't disapprove in any way - you go girl!" vibe - without seeming like a weirdy stalker of breast-feeders type. So I tend to act like "hey, it's so cool that I haven't even noticed" way. And they probably think I haven't Smile

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2006 18:32

I go for the smiling dewily approach :)

kiskidee · 26/04/2006 19:35

I haven't been asked yet but then a 7 mile stare coupled with a pissed off expression would keep most morons at bay.

if any morons came along, I am not known for being short of words and loudly too.

When dh is with us, I don't think anyone would dare as he is built like a brick sh*thouse - not that he would fill em in or anything. Grin

suzi2 · 26/04/2006 20:03

I've never had anything but positive comments. Like old ladies saying "it's so lovely to see a mum feeding her baby by herself... I didn't think anyone did that in this day and age" and "you keep going for as long (months) as he wants as it's the best thing for him". Grin

Anyway, if any member of staff anywhere said anything I'd tell them that since we're in Scotland they can shut up and put up! If it was a member of the public I'd tell them to mind their own business quite frankly. I am considerate though and realise that others can be uncomfortable. Therefore I feed as discreetly as possible getting a table at the edge in a restaurant or whatever.

I always think this Martha!
Try to give a supportive smile which I'm not sure isalways registered.
Belle, fed on dozens of planes. it is a godsend, for everyone.

Marthamoo, this happened to me last week. I was BFing in one of the very few BF-friendly places in York & a woman arrived at the next table with her baby. She did that "groping each breast thing to see which one was due to be fed from" kind of thing. Sure enough, the next time I looked she was BFing. Just like you, I wasn't sure if she'd really appreciate me grinning at her like a goon. I must say, if you're in the confined space of a Parent & Baby room, it's easier to strike up a convo.

Thanks for those links, Sazhig. Much appreciated.

FAZ, I wondered how long it would be before the Albert Hall story appeared. Smile

Karmamother - love that phrase! "She did that "groping each breast thing to see which one was due to be fed from" kind of thing". I used to kind of weigh them in each hand! :o

Karmamother · 27/04/2006 11:02

Even if you do it discretly, another BFer will spot it!
