I had to ask, my dd who is just 4 weeks old usually feeds every 2 hours like clockwork she stuff's herself silly and then sleeps for two hours - at night too! but i fed her last night (am bfeeding) as usual and we both went to bed at 10, when i woke up at 3am she was still zonked out i tried to feed her as the HV said she is too young to leave any longer than 4 hours, but she wouldnt have any of it - i got one pathetic little suck out of her and she went and zonked out again so i put her back to bed, she finally woke up at 7am and whinged a bit and i fed her for about 10 minutes, since then she has fed at 1pm for about 5 minutes and i have tried to feed her just now and she wont even open her mouth - she MUST be hungry she is such a guzzler all the time, i have tried everything but its like im producing knock out drugs in my milk and she out for the count since last night! is this normal? - she is my third and my ds1 and ds2 never did this to my memory! im not too worried - but i am a little, am i worrying unecessarily?? she doesnt look ill??? im really puzzled! can anyone help??? xxx

Maybe just taking a little rest! Sounds like she has filled up plenty over the last month!!
If not feeding by the morning I'd probably call the HV though...just in case.

HelenEmjay · 12/10/2005 17:24

Yeah thanks moondog! she could be! she got weighed yesterday and she has put on 11oz in a week - which i was really pleased with, but now she has just stopped feeding and is just sleeping! dont know if she's ok! it doesnt seem right to me - i just tried to feed her again and she has sucked about 5 times and she is now going all floppy eyes are rolling and she is even dribbling what milk she has in her mouth - she looks like ive given her a double whiskey!

moondog · 12/10/2005 17:28

Blimey!! 11 oz in a week!!

You have to go with your instinct though Helen.
If you feel something is up,there is no harm n taking her to the doctor.

Keep us posted please.

Cadmum · 12/10/2005 17:48

Just posted a message on your original thread. I will try to copy and paste it here...

Cadmum · 12/10/2005 17:50

This is my thinking but I may be a little extreme:

Oh dear... I would be worried but mainly because DS2 (also our third) was very ill as a baby and my first clue was his lack of interest in feeding. I would keep a close eye on her and find a note-book to jot down how often she feeds and for how long as well as how often she wees/poops and any other observations that you think might be helpful in the event that you do need to have her seen by a doctor.

I really hope that it resolves itself and that she goes back to feeding regularly. In the meantime I would follow the advice to express some milk both to keep up your suppply and to prevent yourself from developing mastitis.

(Again, this paranoid approach is based on the challenges faced with our third. I am sorry if I am worrying you unnecessarily.)

Cadmum · 12/10/2005 17:54

I started taking DS to the GP when he lost interest in feeding but I was sent away with a reminder that babies learn to feed more efficiently and take less time with each feeding.

To make a long story short: trust your instincts. I had DS2 in at the GP everyday for a week and they kept sending me packing even when I has mastitis and he had a fever... They should have sent us to A&E because he was very ill (septic by the time he was admitted) and I had honestly started to question my sanity.

zippy539 · 12/10/2005 18:33

Again I would go with my instinct BUT if she has put on 11oz in a week it might be that she is just recovering from the growth spurt and needs some kip! I'd give it another day and if still worried pop to the doctors.

staceym11 · 12/10/2005 19:14

go with your instinct but if shes fine in herself when she is awake (other than not feeding) she might just need to catch up on some sleep (they grow when they are sleeping) do what feels right!!!

startingtobehalloweenylover · 12/10/2005 19:32

helenemjay, this is NOT normal! I had a similar problem with ds, and tiktok (our resident bf counsellor) said the same. a 4 week old should go no longer than 6 hours without a feed.

luckily in my case ds was back to normal the next day!
do try and feed her every 4 hours, remove clothes to wake her up more if necessary and have some skin-to-skin time with her

If none of this works then please speak to your health visitor or GP.

If babies go without food they do get sleepier, and then they feed less because they are sleepy... and so on! it's a vicious circle...

sorry if i have worried you, but I would be concerned if it wa me!

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 12/10/2005 19:34

on your original thread I suggested giving her a bath to see if that works

Cadmum · 13/10/2005 12:58

Thnking of you and hoping that your DD has been feeding all night to make up for yesterday. Let us know if you have a moment...

HelenEmjay · 13/10/2005 13:53

Hiya everyone - thanks for all the posts! she has been slightly better, she woke only twice in the night and fed for about 10 minutes each time she has had a very small feed this morning and then again about an hour ago and thats it she is surrently out for the count again - still! im REALLY REALLY not sure wether to be worried or not, if there is something wrong what could it be? she was born 2 weeks early and she has had no problems so far at all, but i did notice last night after her bath she had just gone to sleep and her breathing was really quite strange - you know how premie babies breath when they have problems? theyre kind of using all theyre chest muscle to breath - it has a name i cant remember but she was doing that for ages - that worried me but she stopped after a while, im not sure what i would say to the Dr if i took her? - she breathes funny and she sleeps too much - he might think im bonkers! but then if she is poorly......... what could it be? and now after her feed free day (almost) yesterday i have VERY little milk!!

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 13:58

DTs were very prem and on oxygen and the breathing is called RESSESSING and if she is doing that you deffo need to take her to Dr or A & E

So you mean the chest is sucked in so all the ribs show and it looks like it is taking alot of effort to breathe

Please take her asap it sounds very worrying imho

sending you both hugs {{{{{{{}}}}}}

Lonelymum · 13/10/2005 14:00

Helenemjay, breathing funny and sleeping lots don't sound like small things to me, even though they are perhaps not very specific things to worry about. Don't underestimate your expertise as a mother (she is your third right?) I think you will find the doctor will take you quite seriously if you went along (not to say I think anything is wrong but it sounds like you need yur mind put at rest - she is very young still and vulnerable.)

moondog · 13/10/2005 14:01

Take her in Helen. Put your mind (and ours!) at rest.

zippy539 · 13/10/2005 14:01

Def take her to docs/hospital asap if she's ressessing when breathing.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 13/10/2005 14:02

What colour are her gums and lips and fingernails and inside eyelids

Are they at all blue or blueish tingne?

If so please get help now

Cadmum · 13/10/2005 14:11

I think the advice here is sound. Have her seen! She is too little to not be feeding regularly and that breathing is really worrying.

HelenEmjay · 13/10/2005 15:28

Ok i have called the Dr's and she is going to be seen at 4.30 so i will let u all know! xx
