I had to ask, my dd who is just 4 weeks old usually feeds every 2 hours like clockwork she stuff's herself silly and then sleeps for two hours - at night too! but i fed her last night (am bfeeding) as usual and we both went to bed at 10, when i woke up at 3am she was still zonked out i tried to feed her as the HV said she is too young to leave any longer than 4 hours, but she wouldnt have any of it - i got one pathetic little suck out of her and she went and zonked out again so i put her back to bed, she finally woke up at 7am and whinged a bit and i fed her for about 10 minutes, since then she has fed at 1pm for about 5 minutes and i have tried to feed her just now and she wont even open her mouth - she MUST be hungry she is such a guzzler all the time, i have tried everything but its like im producing knock out drugs in my milk and she out for the count since last night! is this normal? - she is my third and my ds1 and ds2 never did this to my memory! im not too worried - but i am a little, am i worrying unecessarily?? she doesnt look ill??? im really puzzled! can anyone help??? xxx

jofeb04 · 13/10/2005 22:08

Any news yet? Thinking of you and your dd

HelenEmjay · 14/10/2005 09:42

Hiya everyone! im REALLY sorry i never got chance to get back on here last night was sat at the Dr's until about 6.30! and had a chaotic evening with my other two so never got chance! ANYWAY - got to see a really CRAP Dr, he barely spoke a word of english and he just listened to her chest and said hmm well she looks ok to me! he then went and called a paediatrician (sp??) and told me to go back and wait in the waiting room while he see's other patients and waits for this pd to get back to him, so i sat and waited for almost an hour and when he called me back in he never said anything to me he was just writing a letter to this paediatrician and then handed it to me and said you need to post that to him ok? - is it me or what? what a right waste of time he was! again today she is abit better and i have only noticed her doing that resessing thing for a minute or two last night, she is feeding a little more but still not nearly as much as she was! so anyway im none the wiser as to what the problem might be - id call the gp office and moan about him but i have no idea at all what he is called - i couldnt understand a word he said when he told me! dont know what to do now!

Oh dear

phone NHS direct 0845 4567 IIRC

Could you take her to A & E or maybe back to GP to see another dr?

Do you have a GP that you like and who you think is good?

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 10:10

and by the way HE WAS A WASTE OF TIME

Did you read the letter?

madmarchscare · 14/10/2005 10:13

Either go back to your doctors sugery now and demand to be seen by someone who will explain clearly what is going on. If you cannot get any joy there go to A&E.

soapbox · 14/10/2005 11:43

Helen - I would go straight to A&E and take the letter with you and demand to be seen.

In a small baby this has gone on far too long. If she is still listless and sleepy it is because she may well be dehydrated by now. It really is not worth taking the risk.

I would complain to the surgery about the doctor, if nothing else about his lack of English.

Marina · 14/10/2005 11:46

Please take her to A & E Helen. I have no direct experience of this situation but I don't think the GP has handled it right. Take the letter, go now, and let us know how you get on. Best of luck.

moondog · 14/10/2005 13:10

A&E now Helen.
Please!

HelenEmjay · 14/10/2005 14:21

ok i phoned dp and told him i think we should take her to A&E, my sister dropped in though who is a nurse and she said she isnt really sure what she would do - olivia looks ok she isnt pale or unwell looking, and her breathing seems ok, but she just wont feed much! i did have LOADS of milk but i dont have much now i dont think as she is barely taking any! for her to have fed so much last week to have put on 11 oz she fed like theres was a drought coming now she has barley had a sniff since tuesday?? i have called the dr's office and complained and from what i can gather im not on my own in my opinions (have nothing against foreign Dr's - would just like to know what he was saying!!). Anyway im waiting for a call back from nhs........... see what happens from here, i cant imagine what could be the problem with her, to be honest at the moment she looks a picture - she's just out for the count - permanently!

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 14:25

OOOOOOOh there is something not right here

We are on FRiday now and she last ate properly on Tuesday

Please get her checked out again

If you pinch her skin does it go straight down again or is it slowly go down

HelenEmjay · 14/10/2005 14:35

hmmm skin seems ok - abit dry possibly......

OP posts:
RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 14:36

what I mean is IIRC if dehydrated skin doesnt go striaght back down again

try it on yourself and see if it is the same

Are you near a hospital???

betty2000 · 14/10/2005 14:49

I am actually off mumsnet for reasons I won't go into here, but this is so potentially serious I am posting under another nick.

Helen - your baby needs attention from someone who knows what they are looking for, and I don't include the GP in that. Someone who knows what's what would be checking for a urine infection, or some other condition that might mean she is conserving energy to cope with it....your breastmilk supply will still be fine, though yes, it might seem to you that the 3 plus days less stimulation might have affected it, this won't be temporary. It will come back with the right stimulation.

Sometimes, poorly babies do simply sleep and sleep. This needs checking out - perhaps your health visitor would take a look, and direct you to a reliable source of help if necessary.

When the dust settles, complain about the GP.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 14:54

Do you not think it should be a paed though betty?

IME HV don't always know everything

DS was very prem and HV knew nothing

crunchie · 14/10/2005 14:55

I would take her to A&E tbh. Go and say you are SURE you are a neurotic mum, but this is not right, the GP was useless and you are worried. Strange breathing a newborn and non feeding should always get checked out. If she is not dehyrated yet, she soon will be and then will end up in hospital. Better you take her in now

flamebat · 14/10/2005 14:55

I think an a&e deparment is the best bet now... GP didn't help. If you have a hospital nearby with a children's unit, then head to a&e there (even if it is further) - they will normally be more use and just send you straight to the paeds up there.

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 14:56

please tell us you are going to the hospital

HelenEmjay · 14/10/2005 14:58

Well still havent heard anything from the nhs line people! and i have to dash off to pick ds1 up from school 5 mins down the road, so hopefully when i get back i will have heard something!! im only about 10 mins away by car from our local hospital so i fi dont hear anything from anyone as i have left a message with hv too then i will jst take her up there

OP posts:
betty2000 · 14/10/2005 15:21

Yes, I do think it should be a paed, RTK ....but the HV is a way of getting to see one, as well as being another pair of eyes/ears herself.

betty2000 · 14/10/2005 15:33

whoops...when I said 'won't be temporary' I meant 'will be temporary'

Cadmum · 14/10/2005 15:53

I have tried to resist the urge to post here this morning but I am really worried that you might end up in a situation similar to ours. The GPs all looked at our DS2 when he was in a similar state and they were convinced that at worst he might be fighting a virus. In the end he was on IV anti-biotics for a week and fed through an NG tube. It was REALLY distressing and might have been avoided if I had followed my insticnts and taken him straight to A&E.

Has she pooped recently? Is it green rather than the usual breast fed yellow? This indicates that baby is only getting fore-milk for hydration and not hind milk for growth IYKWIM...

4 days off her feeds is serious.

Cadmum · 14/10/2005 15:53

Sorry, Can't spell today...

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 14/10/2005 16:06

Any news yet?

I am quite worried that it is friday afternoon and so everywhere will be closing down for weekend

ANd A & E will start getting busier
