Extreme breast feeding (funny places you've fed) light hearted thread

I've bf in some horrid and also funny places and situations over the time I fed DS and now DD.

BF DD sitting on damp sand on a windy beach in Norfolk, DS sitting on my lap to keep dry, about 4 feet from the sea as the tide started coming in very quickly just as she latched on. DH stood back and laughed and then took a photo! Angry

Couldn't find anywhere to bf very hungry, screaming DS in a shopping mall so ended up feeding him standing up, behind the door in a baby change loo (no lock on door, no seat, right opposite mens loo.) Sad

In an indian restaurant full of disapproving older couples immediately after DH helpfully says "This would be an awful audience to bf in front of." (cue DD promptly waking up and screaming as loudly as possible). The restaurant went deadly quiet and all eyes were on me as I shoved DD under a cover to try to feed her discreetly whilst she gulped down milk as if thru an amplifier and DS pats her on the head saying "Hello Cake's DD" throughout the feed. Blush

Can you trump these? Grin

I'm not bothered about feeding in public and I'll feed anywhere / any time, but the two worst places I've fed:

  1. In a packed hospital waiting room. The only seat available was smack bang in the middle of the room with all eyes on me.

  2. In my back to work meeting with my boss a couple of weeks ago. I have no idea why I found this so awkward though.

AlCrowley · 15/09/2010 09:58

Hmm lets see...

DD wouldn't do the neutral expression for her passport photo at 8 weeks old, she kept crying, so I plonked myself down on the bench outside the shop and fed her until he was sufficiently dopey to lie still.

She cried while we were walking round Twycross zoo, so I sat under a tree outside the Gorilla enclosure and fed her.

I've fed on a beach in Portugal. It was quite liberating as there were so many topless women, I figured one more boob wouldn't make a difference.

I fed DS on a bench at Edinburgh Zoo and in the restaurant of the Sea Life Center there too.

I fed DD in the car parked outside the church at my friend's baby's Christening. I almost fed her inside the Church but was hot and decided it was a good excuse to excuse myself.

Also in the car waiting outside the boarding kennels to drop the rabbits off before holidays. The lady was late and DD decided she'd like a snack while we waited.

On a plane. Sucking stopped DD's ears popping and stopped her crying.

I've fed in endless restaurants without even DH noticing until I unlatched sometimes :)

During Christmas dinner last year when she was 8 days old

She latched herself on while we were in the bath once too...

I've got loads :)

I'd find bf in front of my boss v weird too. I guess it's mixing your professional image with newsflash I have breasts!! and worse: breast milk!!

I once bf in front of a chap who I used to manage, he'd come to have lunch with me whilst I was on maternity leave. Poor guy really didn't know where to look.

My best two were

  • while receiving communion - she decided just at the wrong moment to wake up and get hungry, so had her in a sling and I don't think the priest noticed :)
  • while singing at a friend's baby's baptism; got DH to hold the music. Several people said afterwards they thought she was just having a nice cuddle to keep her quiet, only one mum noticed what was really up!

Worst was probably on the front wall of a house 2 streets away from our front door, she just would not stop yelling and I was getting lots of Bad mum looks, so gave up and took a seat to quieten her down Blush

sethstarkaddersmum · 15/09/2010 10:07

my best ones are:

-while going down a slide (was following 2yo dd round a play area while holding ds1 and hardly realised I was doing it)
-while steering a narrowboat - this was a deliberate thing to see if I could, after I read that women who worked on narrowboats used to do this (and if they couldn't breastfeed they had to get someone else to foster their baby because when bottles were made of glass it was too dangerous to have them on a bumpy narrowboat Sad).
Baby was wearing a lifejacket at the time in case anyone's worried.

My hardest one was bf on a yacht while both me and the baby were wearing lifejackets - was not easy to get the head to reach the breast with all that lifejacket in the way!

My funniest was sitting bf at the top of a hill in the Lake District when a troop of DoE expedition students walked past, gaped, and then half of them walked past again pretending not to look because they couldn't believe what they were seeing Grin

mrspear · 15/09/2010 10:11

I gave up once and sat on a little scrap of a grass verge because DS was crying so much.

I was in Putney Exchange and they had no room for BF nor a proper nappy changing area (it was a 2 by 2 room with sink and worktop) so i found a sofa outside the Waitrose. I then got told by a very aggressive security guard to move on. I finally ended up in a tiny M & S changing room.

And i did BF on the plane thing as it kept him quiet.

hollyoaks · 15/09/2010 10:17

I've fed in a cafe next to the penguin enclosure at Edinburgh zoo. :)

In the car on numerous occasions, always parked up of course.

In our sitting room, obviously not unusual, but dd2 being held with my knees whilst I changed dd1's nappy and clothes.

In the dome at centre parcs, very tricky with a tiny baby and bikini top and our neighbours who walked round the corner at that very point!!! We didn't know we were going to be there.

Probably more if I have a good think.

EmmaBemma · 15/09/2010 10:20

I've only been breastfeeding for 7 weeks but have already managed one excrutiating experience - sitting on an apparently deserted beach next to a sand dune as my older daughter searched for shells. Next minute, an excitable and over-friendly Alsatian bounds over the top of the dunes and starts slobbering all over me and the baby, whilst my three year old screams in fright. I'm trying to shoo the dog away without possibly antagonising it, whilst also calming the three year old. Eventually the owner - a lad in his late teens/early twenties - and his girlfriend turn up and have to drag the bloody dog off me. Baby still latched on! Just hideous.

mousymouse · 15/09/2010 10:21
  • during my appraisal at work (for some reason had to be completed during my maternity leave)
  • in one of the show flats at IKEA (was fab, comfy sofa and footstool)
oopsandbabycoconuts · 15/09/2010 10:25

I fed DD1 whilst queueing for the lift to the top of the Empire State building and all the way up to the top in the lift she then decided to unlatch and see what was going on as the door opened at the top resulting in me flashing a group of school children and Japanese tourists.

CakeandRoses · 15/09/2010 10:25

Some great ones here!

hollyoaks - I'm trying to imagine how you bf DD whilst changing another! Sounds impossible but I fear I might end up having to try this soon as I have 2 under 2.

mrspear - that's reminded me, a friend and i once sat next to each other on a kerb/verge bf our DC and eating our sarnies whilst out on a country walk - a chap passed us and literally did a double take Grin

sethstark - i think you win the extreme bf (moon) cup with your slide/narrowboat feeds!

CakeandRoses · 15/09/2010 10:32

emmabemma - just awful! I'm cringing for you! Hope that's as bad as bf gets for you.

opps - sorry but hah hah hah!!! Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 15/09/2010 10:44

LOL, I think EmmaBemma wins the prize - 'bf while being slobbered on by an Alsatian on a sand-dune' has to be unique. It's the fact that the baby stayed latched on all the way through....

IBlameThePenguins · 15/09/2010 10:45

My DD has just turned oene last 12 months!

For me the winner has to be while we were at a day festival the other week. We had been given some VIP tickets, DD had been having a fab time, but started to get a bit grizzly. I gave her a quick feed, and at the moment she decided to latch off, and throw the muslin on the floor for good measure PAUL WELLER walked passed, and did a double take at my exposed boob!!..made me feel like a propper groupy!!

MoonFaceMama · 15/09/2010 11:21

These are fantastic! Grin

Sethstark i bfed on a ferry, but wasn't driving it! Grin

Emmabemma i am so Angry at those dog owners. Well done for staying calm, i hope it doesn't put you off (bf or dogs, we would never allow our dog to do that)

Have fed in a variety of public places (and aim to do so to raise awareness) but clearly don't lead as exciting a life as you lot!

passionberry · 15/09/2010 11:23

Just back from my first holiday with DD (5 months) and it has cured me of any remaining self consciousness about feeding in public - I had to BF: at the airport, on the plane, at baggage claim, on the coach, in the bar, at the restaurant, by the pool every day. I'm sure the other people at the hotel were wondering if I ever stopped BF-ing! And no other bugger was doing it as per usual, in spite of loads of babies there.

Had a fab time! Grin

spiritmum · 15/09/2010 11:24

On the steps leading up to an altar at a church whilst leading a service.

passionberry · 15/09/2010 11:24

Lol at PAUL WELLER!

FlightofFancy · 15/09/2010 11:37

On the hard shoulder of the M4 - couldn't get down/up embankment while waiting for the AA, so perched on bit of grass verge right next to the hard shoulder. DS was horribly distracted by watching the traffic zoom past, but I didn't dare turn round in case I accidentally flashed a lorry driver.

Then standing up watching a Red Arrows display - DS went to sleep half way through despite the noise!

cupofcoffee · 15/09/2010 11:58

Walking round the shops and at the supermarket checkout.

Answering the door to the postman on many occasions.

Sat wet and wearing just a towel in the changing room after swimming while everyone else got changed around me.

cairnterrier · 15/09/2010 12:28

Best one for me:

Took DS to have his footprints put on mugs etc, he got hungry so whilst latched on, his feet were painted blue and stamped onto the mugs. I've got some great photos! He, of course, barely noticed at 4 months.

Now at 9 months, he'll stop just to check that the wall is still where it used to be.

jetgirl · 15/09/2010 12:35

My favourite: on a double decker bus being driven by my MIL! MY FIL bought her the bus driving experience for a birthday present, and we all had to go for the ride!

EmmaBemma · 15/09/2010 12:43

MoonFaceMama - in fairness to the owner, at first he probably thought the beach was deserted too, and thus a great place to let the dog stretch its legs. Though to me it felt like ages before he showed up, it probably wasn't as long as all that! And he was very apologetic, which makes all the difference.

nickytwotimes · 15/09/2010 12:50

Walking along the beach.

Playpark (all the time).

CakeandRoses · 15/09/2010 20:14

penguins - i'm actually a bit Envy of your paul weller tale! that's ace!

I'm v impressed with all of the bf whilst walking stories here - i act like i've done something heroic if i just cross a room at home whilst bf!
