Extreme breast feeding (funny places you've fed) light hearted thread

I've bf in some horrid and also funny places and situations over the time I fed DS and now DD.

BF DD sitting on damp sand on a windy beach in Norfolk, DS sitting on my lap to keep dry, about 4 feet from the sea as the tide started coming in very quickly just as she latched on. DH stood back and laughed and then took a photo! Angry

Couldn't find anywhere to bf very hungry, screaming DS in a shopping mall so ended up feeding him standing up, behind the door in a baby change loo (no lock on door, no seat, right opposite mens loo.) Sad

In an indian restaurant full of disapproving older couples immediately after DH helpfully says "This would be an awful audience to bf in front of." (cue DD promptly waking up and screaming as loudly as possible). The restaurant went deadly quiet and all eyes were on me as I shoved DD under a cover to try to feed her discreetly whilst she gulped down milk as if thru an amplifier and DS pats her on the head saying "Hello Cake's DD" throughout the feed. Blush

Can you trump these? Grin

I fed in a field full of horses/ponies once, on a country walk. Not recommended. They were clearly attracted to the smell of milk, and surrounded us, slobbering and making wild eyes at us, whilst dh said "shoo" very ineffctually. I ended up fleeing, ds1 still latched on, with the 8' straps of my untied wilkinet sling trailing behind us, as I ran!

I've fed at most other places it is possible to feed at, really. I've also fed at a cricket match, Carikube. Unfortunately it was in the pavilion (not Lords) of an MCC match, full of very elderly, traditional men in their ties. It wasn't well received!

JamieJay · 16/09/2010 18:25

Only been feeding for 5 weeks but so far have fed:

in front of various inlaws,
M&S cafe,
local restaurant,
on a bench at local park (DD doesn not do falling asleep in the pram!)
on the front steps of the registry office as she decided she wouldn't stay asleep whilst we registered her

When pregnant I didn't even think I'd be confident enough to breastfeed let alone in public and have MN to thank for getting on with it Grin

CoffeeAndCarrotCake · 16/09/2010 22:36

The only place I would NOT BF is in front of any of my male colleagues - the very thought makes me feel ill. Confused The idea of Evil Boss catching a glimpse of my boobs makes me feel faint. Shock

That said, I've fed while walking round a market, on planes, in cars, under a pashmina while my friend walked down the aisle, whilst lifting DD1 down from a climbing frame (akward), and whilst being chased by a duck from hell during a picnic! Angry

mrsgordonfreeman · 16/09/2010 22:41

Oh, I've fed DD at my office. One male colleague breezed past and said "Ooh, best part of the day!" to me.

The same chap showed up on the same cruise ship as me a couple of weeks ago, and guess what I was doing when he saw me?

So you can add: all over the Celebrity Eclipse, including during the evening shows.

moajab · 16/09/2010 23:14

I've breastfed in many of the same places previous posters have put - buses, trains, planes etc. I've often fed during school shows to keep him quiet while I watch older children performing and also during new parents meeting when DS2 started school.
One place I found very comfy was in the ball pool at our local soft play place. Having all the balls under your arms is great when holding a heavy baby! A man walked past and said he'd never seen anyone feeding in a ball poll before.

CakeandRoses · 16/09/2010 23:34

the wedding ones here reminded me that I also breast fed DS on my wedding day, wearing a low-cut vintage style gown, no bra, just breast pads i think. remember praying i wouldn't leak/spill bm on it.

it was an evil picture really as i was perched in a disabled loo, wearing said dress, drinking champagne and bf! Blush

mrsgordon - nice one at 'best part of the day'! Smile

worst place i've expressed (pumped and dumped) was the loo at Champneys following a very painful massage - painful because I should have expressed beforehand but spent too long scoffing lunch, so every downward stroke of my back squashed my poor, bursting boobs painfully into the couch. I got to the loo, looked in the mirror - my breasts were square by then and had mastitis written all over them Shock

I'm sure I posted on another thread about this but I'm sure it counts as an extreme bf experience:- in a boat floating down the flooded tunnels of an underground mine in the Peak District. Didn't realise when we went in that it would entail a long trip down a very narrow tunnel in a boat (i thought it was just a big cave). DD always was an amazing feeder though, I could tuck her under one arm and bf while cooking. Was really sad when we finally stopped.

YanknCock · 17/09/2010 00:26

At the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam, in front of a sign that said 'Bottle Filling'--I've got a picture somewhere, it amused me greatly at the time!

Most recent 'never thought I'd do that' was feeding DS as he sat in the shopping trolley in Tesco.

cairnterrier · 17/09/2010 11:07

YanknCock

Quick technical question, how did you manage to feed him whilst he was in the trolley? Have great visions of either leaning over the side or a very athletic straddle position!

Again · 17/09/2010 11:34

On a motorway in a moving car with ds strapped into his car seat and me 'strapped' into the passenger seat next to him. I basically hovered over him and dropped it into his mouth.

Again · 17/09/2010 11:41

Oh and beside a priest on a flight. He then started up a conversation about sore nipples?!

blackcurrants · 17/09/2010 11:51

@Again
I've been wondering if I can get myself flexible enough to do that. We're going on a long trip in October and DS is still feeding any chance he gets.... good to know some mums have done it and survived! :)

Again · 17/09/2010 12:00

Just about, blackcurrants!! It was either that or listen to wailing for 3 hours. Wasn't really talking to dh by the end of it because I kept accusing him of speeding up everytime ds was almost asleep!

YanknCock · 17/09/2010 16:27

cairnterrier, I'm lucky to be just barely 5'4", would have been a lot harder if I were taller. I had a BFing top on, so just popped it out and leaned over at a very awkward angle (back arched and arse sort of sticking out a bit). I couldn't have pushed the trolley whilst doing it, but it was fine (if a tad uncomfortable and odd-looking) for just standing still and hiding out near the dressing rooms in the clothing section!

CakeandRoses · 18/09/2010 08:37

Grin at Yank's description. Must have looked so funny!

I've fed dd2 at a number of work meetings in front of male and female colleagues. Also this week in front of the visiting accountant.

My most memorable was in a pub in north Scotland with dd1. We were all out for dinner when the local rotary club members arrived for their weekly meeting. Cue a procession of middle aged to elderly men passing me and dd1 mid feed. Every one of them did a double take. Likely the first flash of boob some of them had seen in a few years.

organiccarrotcake · 18/09/2010 16:42

At work, lots, as went back when DS1 was 3 weeks. One time I was on the phone to a customer and he popped off and burped loudly Blush.

In Sainsbury's, while pushing trolley and DS in sling. Lovely lady (staff!) ran over to help me unload the trolley as when I leaned in he pulled my boob! I thought I was being really discrete!

In school uniform shop while older boy tried on uniform.

Post office queue, planes, beach, bed shop. Most recent odd place was Argos. I sat down on a chair in the furniture dept and got on with it. Anywhere really - wherever I go, I am totally happy with it. Loads of positive comments and to date (2 boys over 6 yrs) no -ve comments from strangers.

Athrawes · 19/09/2010 10:01

My friend and I were both desperate to feed last week, too far to the nearest cafe, and faced with either the bench outside the RSA or the two comfy chairs in the middle of the posh dress shop. The dress shop owner was fine about it and I will certainly shop there in the future. I often answer the front door to the courier, to sign for a parcel, with child attached to boob. I won't be able to do it for much longer as he is getting heavy. I am afraid I am not in the slightest bit embarrassed about feeding anywhere my baby needs a meal.

cairnterrier · 19/09/2010 22:17

Thanks Yank! Sorry, have been away for the weekend so only just got chance to reply. Hope your back recovered soon.

LifeOfKate · 20/09/2010 21:33

Some good ones here :o

I have had a busy summer myself, 2 beaches, a friends wedding (i.e. as they were taking their vows in the church) and my personal best, a stand at Cadwell Park (race track), surrounded by loads of bikers :o

MonkeyMargot · 20/09/2010 21:40

Loving this thread.
Just come back from France where I tandem BF my 12 week old twins on the beach, at Nice airport, and in our holiday home whilst a builder drilled some holes in the ceiling next to me.
The beach was the best - the French locals thought it was hilarious, with my enormous Ez2Nurse twin-feeding cusion. One french chap commented, "You are perfectly equipped". Now, I THINK he referred to my nursing cushion (not my norks!!)

Cadmum · 21/09/2010 01:46

I love this thread! What a great idea.

I fed ds1 in the Louvre. The guard gave me grief stating that it made other patrons feel uncomfortable. I moved to the feet (foot) of Venus de Milo at my mums recommendation since she already had her norks out.

I bf dd1 during at least 4 wedding ceremonies to keep her quiet.

I bf ds2 in a canoe on the Wye in Wales.

I bf dd2 at the top of the Empire State building when she was 5 days old and in Madison Square Garden the same evening at a Rangers' hockey game. The first site earned me a warning from the guard that if he contacted the police I would be issued a citation. Hmm Sadly, he was mistaken as I would have liked one for dd's baby book!

Dh just reminded me that I have also bf in a long list of countries: Austria, Bosnia, Cambodia, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States,Vatican City.

I have been know to bf in trains, planes, automobiles, ferries, gondolas, busses, subways, by the side of the road, in mountain passes, on the ski hill, at the beach, by the pool, in church...

If my baby is hungry, I fed him/her. (We do have 4 dcs and move frequently.)

AllNightMilkBar · 21/09/2010 13:51

I've also expressed while on ski slopes etc. Expressed between games at Wimbledon semi-finals day this year without my father realising what I kep disappearing for!

Sitting on the steps of the Waltzers at a fair - thought actually going on them while BF was a step too far!

I regularly stop on random strangers' front door steps if I can't find anywhere else to sit down. So far, no one has come out and asked me to move on Blush

On the M25 while in queues of traffic going nowhere.

Standing under the grandstand at a point-to-point in January - not to be recommended, it was rather a chill breeze!

insomnicat · 21/09/2010 19:30

While in a sling at Gweek seal sanctuary. We were watching the otters though so it was quite nice!

CakeandRoses · 29/09/2010 08:54

cadmum - i bf at the louvre too (in the big long room which the Mona Lise room leads off, iirc). Altho i had a few disapproving looks i remember feeling absurdly happy that so many pics featured bf - really!
