When a family member (white) tried to order egg on toast in Turtle Bay as the food "looked disgusting."

My kids - everyday 🥵

maggiethecat · 03/10/2020 13:22

Kissing teeth is usually followed by a barrage of patwa leaving said kids properly perplexed.

itsovernowthen · 14/10/2020 13:31

In Ghana it's cornrows and plan-tain Grin

maggiethecat · 14/10/2020 13:48

@JayDot500
I just watched the Auntie and Hyacinth clip - I was cracking up! the neighbours are probably going to call the police.

My mum takes it one step further - she refuses to go to restaurants with us, saying 'mi nuh like eat out" Grin

Other people who don’t like plantain or hard food!

Oh I love plantain. But yam, green banana, dasheneSad I can't stand it. Especially dashene.

imjustwingingitdontchaknow · 08/11/2020 00:43

Do you realise how rude it is to do that to somebody?

It's basically the audible equivalent of sticking your finger up.

Please stop.

I see alot of this where I live and it's just unnecessary.

imjustwingingitdontchaknow · 08/11/2020 00:46

To clarify I'm talking about kissing your teeth at somebody in disdain.

It happened to me the other day all because somebody wanted to squeeze past me in a shop.

Really bloody rude.

JayDot500 · 08/11/2020 01:35

For as long as people still stick middle fingers up, the wanker gesture, curse words or whatever annoys you, there will always be people kissing their teeth in disdain.

People generally don't tend to stick their fingers up at random strangers in a shop though do they.

People who 'KMT' have gotten so comfortable doing it they don't realise nor care how rude it is.

As soon as anybody takes umbrage with it they're called racist Confused

maggiethecat · 08/11/2020 10:17

Kissing teeth has so many nuances. No doubt there will be some cases where accompanied by body language/facial expression the gesture will be rude or even aggressive. However there will be many other cases where someone is expressing mild annoyance or frustration at someone in the same way that you’d glare at them.

JayDot500 · 08/11/2020 11:44

@imjustwingingitdontchaknow No, they might just tell you to 'fuck outta the way.' Or scoff and/or tut, as many people do where I live. Why take issue with the sucking of teeth when there are several other ways people express irritation and annoyance?

You can say you don't like it, but it won't cease.

Because I haven't had anybody scoff, tut or swear me recently.

I live in South East London where teeth kissing is commonplace and frequently used to show disrespect. It wears thin.

maggiethecat · 08/11/2020 12:56

Depending on where in SE London you’ve probably become oblivious to the effing and blinding around you.

Don’t allow the teeth kissing to wear you down. In many cases it’s just the audible equivalent of a glare.

Afromeg · 08/11/2020 12:59

Well, I'm African and my mother, her mother before her and her mother before her, that grew plantAin in their backyard, cook and eat it, call it plantAin. The whole country where I'm from call it plantAin. It IS plantAin.
Nothing else!

Didn't you get the memo? If they say it's planTIN and CANE rows, forget everything you've ever known, you're own culture and history and the reasons. Stop calling them planTAIN and CORN rows because every black culture is the same and must speak as one. There's no space for calling one item different things. Get into it chile!

maggiethecat · 08/11/2020 13:05

🤣
That’s right! Get into it chile!

That's a fair statement and I see your point.

I can tune out foul language and general effing and blinding when it's not directed at me or others in expression of disrespect, it doesn't bother me.

I'm not offended by swearing but I do get offended if I'm sworn at iyswim.

Just like I have no problem with people kissing their teeth in general, but find it very offensive when it's done at me.

It just so happens that the last few times somebody has kissed their teeth in my vicinity it has been to express disdain to me or somebody I'm with, usually for just being somewhere minding my own business (the shop example I gave above to name one)

maggiethecat · 08/11/2020 14:22

Do you find that it’s mostly the older generation that have behaved this way toward you?
I think back to my grandmother and think hers is the generation that feels they are entitled to behave like this, based on seniority and the cultural idea that younger people should have respect for them.

I do yes.

I'm 26 and have definitely noted it coming from older women (never men, strangely enough)

When I say older I mean 40-50

maggiethecat · 08/11/2020 20:42

I thought that I rarely KMT anymore (not intentionally) but younger Dd tells me that I do it all the time Grin

It’s possible that some people do it unconsciously. Others may knowingly do it to signal frustration or show disgust.

Maybe because it is used in a wide range of scenarios/contexts I think in the situation you describe I would find KMT far less offensive than swearing.

Bigjohn0 · 13/11/2020 11:48

What is kiss your teeth

maggiethecat · 13/11/2020 14:43

introduction to the expression is at 00:17 but the video is an attempt to get people to spell the sound (the research is all done at a very nice resort of course)

skippy67 · 14/11/2020 09:36

I hate to break it to you winging, but people aren't gonna stop kissing their teeth because you don't like it. It's been around forever, and will be around forever. Like eyerolling, swearing, and numerous other expressions of disdain.
