When a family member (white) tried to order egg on toast in Turtle Bay as the food "looked disgusting."

Exactly how I learnt it.

I remember being 4 and practising stupes in the Caribbean Grin

I have to make sure dd masters it before she starts school.

To be fair Turtle Bay is barely above dog food!
Wr had the pork ribs, jerk chicken and curry goat and it all tasted the same .

Am I the only one who really likes Turtle Bay? Blush

I went to Levi Roots' place before. The red pea soup was beige!

Definitely the latter. It makes my teeth itch to hear people say “plan-tain”.
ImitatingAdulthood · 17/09/2020 02:08

@Dastardlythefriendlymutt

Anything that elicits the word "nonsense" from me

Which is nearly everything

Definitely slow/bad service though

Came on here to say any type of nonsense. It would seem I come across a lot of nonsense in a day.
DeeCeeCherry · 17/09/2020 02:12

Okay I'll be the first one to say it.... when they used to ask me 'is that your real hair??'

4c Afro over here. At front of queue in Gregg's (yeah I know...) waiting to pay for a baguette, cashier screams OMG I loooove your hair! Is it yours...?🙄

YES, the latter Grin

ImitatingAdulthood · 17/09/2020 03:40

Yes, definitely plan-tin, although I don't actually like it. Cannot just be me that has a list of food or drink items they are "expected" to like as a black person but they don't.

And when you tell someone you don't like something they'd probably kiss their teeth at you too 😂

Malahaha · 17/09/2020 06:46

Guyana. But lots of Trini relatives and connections! :) That's how I know about steups!

Yellow plantain is delicious. Green plantain is horrible. Especially foo-foo.
Malahaha · 17/09/2020 06:48

Definitely plan-tin.

Plantin. Huge question, Cornrow or 'cainrow'? It's the latter! People who say 'cornrows' make me kiss my teeth Grin.

Hate hard food, and ackee. Yes I'm a terrible example of a Jamaican.

I'm a Caribbean girl married to a Nigerian man. It's plaaaant-tin! Regularly kissing my teeth over that one Grin

And then I argue with DS over whether it's 'Plantain Crisps' or 'Plantain Chips'.

And it's definitely cain-row! I feel like an imposter when I say corn-row @Mookie81

PatricksRum · 17/09/2020 10:53

@JayDot500 dd's dad is Nigerian also.

The amount of times I use to have to correct him. Wink

Caribbeans cook it better 🤫

And Cain-rows. I dunno about this corn row business, sounds like a kellogs factory.

Huge question...

Plantain

Plantin

Nope, nope, nope. It is NOT the latter here in the UK! The correct pronunciation is PlantAin.

dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/plantain

You're welcome Wink

Malahaha · 17/09/2020 12:23

That's an English person speaking. Typical English pronounciation.
Plantain does not grow in the UK.
They have not learned from the people who actually grow and cook and eat it.
It is plantin.
Nothing else!

JayDot500 · 17/09/2020 12:31

Is anyone else triggered when people say 'plantains'?

@PatricksRum omg don't get me started! I prefer them sweeter, he prefers them more on the green side. Also, I don't dice mine into tiny bits like he often does, but I love the 'tomato egg' he makes you go with them.

@Malahaha Well, I'm African and my mother, her mother before her and her mother before her, that grew plantAin in their backyard, cook and eat it, call it plantAin. The whole country where I'm from call it plantAin. It IS plantAin. Nothing else!
Malahaha · 17/09/2020 13:22

Well then, it is Africa versus the Caribbean! No self-respecting West Indian would call it plantAin. Wink

skippy67 · 17/09/2020 13:34

PlanTIN and Canerow. Obvs.Grin

creativecringe · 17/09/2020 22:44

I haven trying to post a kissing teeth emoji. Mn not having it.

Definitely plantAin and Cornrow. We never grew sugarcane. Backyard full corn.

I struggle mentally with canerow 😁🤭

ImitatingAdulthood · 17/09/2020 23:27

@PatricksRum Kelloggs factory 🤣 that one got me. Definitely canerow though.

Phoenix21 · 18/09/2020 07:41

Other people who don’t like plantain or hard food! I always give it a go and I’m purposely feeding my kid traditional food but I just don’t like it to my shame an embarrassment.

I’ve definitely found my people🤣

You're welcome*

Nothing to do with UK pronunciations. It's Caribbeans vs Africans Grin
