So sorry to hear your news Gi1da and CLB, that's very sad.

Congrats to everyone who's had a scan recently - I finally have a date for my dating/nuchal scan, not until the 9th March which just feels like AGES away, a whole 3 weeks to go!

Had my booking-in appt this morning which has made it feel a bit more real. I liked the midwife very much so that is really nice. And when she took my bloods it didn't hurt - last pregnancy my community midwife was hopeless at taking bloods so I used to end up with huge bruises from it and used to dread having to go and see her! [wimp emoticon]

So have come back with a huge wad of papers, notes, bounty pack, etc which I shall spend a happy afternoon looking through.

LadyRabbit · 16/02/2010 13:25

Just a quick question to those of you who have done this before. I'm not seeing my consultant again until the first week of March when I'll be 11 weeks. So far, I haven't had any bloods done, just a urine test at my initial appointment. My NT scan is the day I turn 12 weeks (same day as you bellabelly), and I have been told that I will have blood tests done for screening and 'other things' then. Is this late to be having bloods done? Or is this normal?

Swordfishtrombones · 16/02/2010 13:47

Hi Ladyrabbit. The first bloods are usually around the 12 week mark so I wouldn't worry. I had mine done last week at 11 weeks because that happened to be when I got booked in. The bloods are to screen for infections/diseases etc and to check your iron levels.

Oh, and your blood group - if you are a negative group you will probably have to have the antiD injections in case your baby is a positive group. I am O+, but I believe that a negative mother can produce antibodies to her positive baby which can affect later pregnancies as your body could reject the baby. Sorry - that sounds quite scary but it is really routine and if you are negative then I'm sure the midwife will be able to explain it all much better!

You'll have more bloods taken later on to check your iron levels.

The initial urine test looks for infections and gives a baseline for the midwife to use at later appts. You'll have to pee into lots of tubes whilst pregnant . They check for proteins and sugars etc. at each appt.

HTH

bellabelly · 16/02/2010 14:16

LadyRabbit yes tis totally normal - I wasn't expecting her to take any today! Last pregnancy I didn't have any bloods taken until my booking-in appt at around 12 weeks whcih was a few days AFTER my nuchal/dating scan. The only difference it made was that I had to wait (a few days I think) for my combined risk to come through from the nuchal scan - they combine risk from the scan, your bloods and your age to give you an overall risk figure.

Had to give a urine sample today as well and she thought it looked like there might be some protein in there - she used a little paper strip to dip in it. Hope the results come back clear, I remember last time they were worried about my protein levels and I had to collect ALL my urine for a whole weekend. That was fun, I can tell you!

Hi all! So sorry to read the sad news!

I'm pleased to hear all the scans are going well. I had mine today. I was so scared. A very close friend of mine had a missed miscarriage last september. I cried when i saw my little gymnast on the screen! It was being a monkey and was upside down. It wouldn't move! That coupled with a retroverted uterus made for a difficult scan for the sonographer! It does annoy me tho that dh got 10 mins of seeing our baby floating round while I got 10 seconds! They really do get the better deal there. Mind you i'd give that up any day for the knowledge that in a few weeks I'll be able to feel the baby kicking around all day!

My scan hes put my EDD forward 2 days so i'll update the list. Although ds was 9 days early so it might be an august baby!

Symptom wise the nausea is still there, was up munching on ritz crackers at 3am! The tiredness seems to be getting better finally. I can actually stay awake till after 8 now!

popsy1 · 16/02/2010 15:27

Hi ladies hope you are all well. Congrats on all that have had scans and appointments, makes it all feel very real doesn't it?

Had my early pg scan yesterday. It was amazing We were sooooo relieved that we both cried!! Its been such an emotional journey for hubby and I.

Got midwife Thursday.

xxx

bellabelly · 16/02/2010 15:57

Oh popsy, that's lovely!

Swordfishtrombones · 16/02/2010 16:43

So pleased all thse scans are going well. Mine is tomorrow morning.

Okay, surely someone on this list is going to be getting twins....any takers?

LadyRabbit · 16/02/2010 17:47

Ta for the info re. bloods ladies!
Swordfishtrombones odds are someone on here is going to have twins, absolutely. You got a special feeling, have you??! Good luck tomorrow!
Felt rotten today and have not been able to move from sofa, but on the plus side discovered what happened to Bobby Ewing while acquainting myself with the daytime telly I have never had time to watch before.
Anyone think you should get maternity leave at the beginning of pregnancy too??!!

bellabelly · 16/02/2010 18:23

I think the odds of twins are around 1 in 80 pregnancies so we are in the clear if the list doesn't go over 79...

I love my twin boys to bits and it is a lot of fun having two together but I am really hoping for just one this time!

bananastew · 16/02/2010 18:38

I think maternity leave should start with conception & end with them leaving home!!! I think the older ds gets the more hard work he gets! cbeebies is getting some good viewing at the minute

I think i spoke too soon about not feeling too tired too! My eyes just want to shut!

comixminx · 16/02/2010 19:23

Hi all, glad to hear the good news from those who have started to have scans and so forth! I've just had my dating & NT scan today - they dated me at 12 + 3 rather than the previous 11 + 6, giving me an EDD of the 28th August - but like others I'll stick around on this thread. Is it true or an old wives tale that first babies are often late? That's my assumption anyway!

The scan was great and although the NT results won't come back for a few days, I was told that the measurement they found was in itself low-risk (you do have to factor in the bloodwork and age to come up with a proper risk factor but it did make us feel relived). No twins here mind! one head, two arms, two legs, present and correct as far as you can tell so far.

I did say yes to taking part in research on whether selenium helps to prevent pre-eclampsia - anyone else helping out with science? In my case I am taking some pills (not a big hardship) and - get this - letting my toenails grow as long as I (and DP) can bear! Then they can be cut & handed back to the researcher who will get them assessed for selenium I suppose.

So good to hear everyone's scan news. I know it's still early days, but that 12 week milestone is on the way!

Good for you volunteering to help with research Comixminx. Sure it will help others in the future.

Right. Have been wrestling with online supermarket shopping for when I'm away from next week and am super tired. Night all.

LadyRabbit - I had my bloods taken at 8wks but only because the MW was particularly concerned about gestational diabetes (two big babies) and anaemia (previous history).

I'm apparently in a higher-risk category for twins (non-ID twins on mother's side) but will be more than happy for someone else on this thread to be the one to have twins.

Congratulations to everyone who's had their scans recently.

Stickhasgrownup · 17/02/2010 12:11

Hi all,
I'm glad for some of you the sickness is easing. I'm still really bad, but am trying something new from the dr and hoping things may improve.
To get out of bed/off the sofa will be a start!
No twins here though (although heavily in my family) so someone else can have that pleasure!
Think its a girl as am soooo sick and I was better with ds.
Take care everyone x

StrictlyKatty · 17/02/2010 12:41

Hey everyone.

I feel like death. Literally, MS all day everyday. Horrible. Was like this with DS, hoping for a break!

MW is coming to see me when i'll be 10 weeks for the booking in. Have had no other tests done yet. Not really sure how it all works over here TBH as DS was born in Germany as DH was working there.

Swordfishtrombones · 17/02/2010 13:48

Hi everyone

I just had my scan and it was lovely to see the little heartbeat and acrobatics. Unfortunately it was being a bit of a livewire so my scan photo isn't very good, but we got a lovely view on the screen with lots of flailing limbs and gymnastics.

Only one in there mind....phew!

My nuchal result is normal as well, but have to wait for the full results in a few days. They dated me a few days earlier than I thought, but unless its a week or more out they don't bother changing the EDD so I'm sticking to the 2nd.

Wow! It's suddenly a bit real. I phoned my mum and all my sisters which was lovely. I've been dying to tell them.

So sorry about all the horrible morning sickness. Mine really is much better now, and since there is no-one else in this house to get chicken pox I'm hopeful that we'll all be fit and healthy in a week! [crossed fingers emoticon]

SkaterGrrrrl · 17/02/2010 15:44

Hi girls

Please take me off the September list as I lost the baby this morning.

Wishing you healthy & happy pregnancies. x

Oh no Skatergurrl, i am so sorry what a sad time....

Words don't really convey the sadness that is felt when this happens. I hope you have all the support around you that you need.

My thoughts are with you x
