I've met a few people like that before. It must be such a shock, but at least she's got another 18 weeks to get used to the idea! You hear of people not knowing until they actually deliver!

My Mum didn't know she was pregnant with me until nearly 5 months... she thought I was an ovarian cyst! She went to the GP with her symptoms & he said 'either you have a cyst or you're pregnant' and referred her to a gynae, who said, 'you have an ovarian cyst AND you're 5 months pregnant!'

Don't think she was much of a drinker but she probably did smoke... perhaps that's why I'm a short arse!

Someone i know found out she was pg at about 32 weeks. She only had sporadic periods anyway, and was rather large so didn't really notice the weight gain. It was a bit of a shock, and a bit of a panic getting things ready but she was really happy about it.

When i mentioned this the other week to a group of mums to be (after aquanatal) a few knew people who only found out when they were on the way to hospital with the head coming out!

Belgianchocs- thanks- definitely nothing similar to urge to go to the loo. I think i was fully dilated at around 6am, tried some pushing (but too painful with the back-to-back thing going on)- i think only once did i feel the baby move down a bit when i pushed. Then contractions seemed to fade gradually so i was given a drip to encourage them again and DD was born just before midday. I would have thought i would have felt some urge over those 6 hours but nothing! At least delighted says she didnt have any urges either so i'm not the only one!

I am gobsmacked by people who don't know they're pregnant until late on - I am currently have the you know what kicked out of me and I'm 'only' 22 weeks - baby is bouncing on that sensitive nerve again, am trying to ignore it but it's difficult. Think the baby wants some lunch.......

Hi all. Just popped in to say just back from meeting consultant to discuss labour options after last times debacle. He said he doesn't know why it took so long last time after a quick first labour, but the epidural will have def slowed it down. So if I want a homebirth I can go for it! Or other option is new Midwife Led Unit due to open very soon with community midwives to deliver and 6 hour discharge option. Quite keen on the homebirth idea. Have a huge freestanding gorgeous bath at home so might just camp in there! Only thing is the community m/w I've seen so far was horrible and don't want her! Can I request somebody else to come and do the delivery? (picky picky I know but can't stand her.) Apparently she attended to a friends homebirth, told her she wasn't in labour because she was too calm, didn't bother to examine her (3rd baby too), then went away and my friends husband delivered the baby about 1 hour later. Rubbish.

Sorry, why am I ranting?
Off to look at hypnotherapy cd's on ebay. Should be doing some work but far too distracted! and excited!

Oh but the bad news is that they think it's a 'very good sized' baby. Eeeek.

I hope you get a nice midwife - why do some of them seem so awful - is it just that we pregnant laydeez are hyper-hyper sensitive?

'very good sized baby' just fills you with fear, doesn't it? Both my beautiful DD's were 7 and a bit lbs but worry as DH was a bouncing 10lb odd baby (and his mum is 5 foot and used to be a size 6). Luckily, I'm a sturdy northern lass with truly child-bearing hips....

I'm still gunning for a homebirth, but have now realised I will have to do something about our neurotic border collie, she barks non-stop when someone comes into the house (and whines when we make any noise in the bedroom ), so imagine her during labour!

Grumpy that's so funny. Have you seen the homebirth thread that is running just now - on the featured thread bit? All about where to do it in your house. I had assumed most would be in bedrooms or bathrooms but seems to be a lot in the living room. Have no idea where in my house I'd do it.........probably be in bath then bedroom floor or something. What do you think?

BTW I wasn't laughing at your 'truly child bearing hips' I was laughing at your dog whining when you're in the bedroom 'making noise' - hee hee
I think you're right - a barking dog might be a bit distracting, although if you're mooing the dog might be shocked into silence?!!

delighted Happy to hear that the consultant is happy for you to go for a hb. Usually you get the mw on call when you're having a hb.
Personally I've been wondering where I'd chose to give birth. I'd like to go for the living room, because that's where I feel most at home, but at the same time I'm not sure if I want my 2 dc's there if it all kicks of in a weekend or outside school hours. I think I'll just go for my instinct on the day.

I have been reading some of the Homebirth thread, I was amazed at the number in the living room - I loved the poster who said her kids were in another room, watching a DVD and eating fish fingers. Just think, I could be watching TV and 'plop' out comes baby!

My poor dog would want to be in the thick of it, assisting and licking and whining. Come to think of it, she might be quite useful in the cleaning up stakes. Ewww.

And the mooing - I mooed loudly throughout DD2 labour, afterwards I remember asking DH in a very small voice "did I moo like a cow?" He was very tactful and said 'no, not really' only later did he tell me that I mooed very loudly and longly and everythingly.

NO-ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT THE MOOING BEFORE YOU HAVE A BABY!!!!!!!

Laughing at the mooing (although I know that I, too, have mooed in the past )
Another friend who recently almost gave birth in the car whilst dropping her other child off at PIL was mooing and her child (age 3) said to Daddy 'Why is mummy making animal noises?' I'm not sure how he explained that.........

When I went into labour and was admitted into the labour suite, I remember both ladies in the rooms either side of me mooing!!!! It scared the crap out of me and I started vomitting with fear. Well I was choo chooing like train so not that much better! But my midewife soon put a stop to that .

It's funny how making noises does seem to help though.

Well my scan is booked for next Saturday with my DH's blessing! I am so excited!!!!

Well my MIL at our first meeting told my DH 'she will do, she has good child bearing hips'.

Have I missed any thing else important? All the birth experiences are really interesting am not sure I'm looking forward to mooing tho

Mooing is good, and the best thing is you probably won't know you're doing it and certainly won't care. (I remember someone else's husband giggling behind a curtain - presumably at my animal noises when in the early labour ward when having DD1. I was moved to labour suite and into a private room pretty sharpish! Probably I was scaring the other ladies). DD was born a few hours later though so mooing obviously was doing good things.

Am hopefully going to catch up with a friend tomorrow who had the homebirth (when the midwife went home and an hour later she delivered ) to see if she has any advice . She's a big hypnobirthing fan.
I think it's sinking in with DH that I'm not joking about not going to hospital - I can see panic in his eyes! Poor man.

Runningmonkey ooh - I am in Longstanton - only 15 mins from you! Are you going to Hinchinbrooke or the Rosie? Looks like the Rosie again for me with this complication - yuk.

Delighted and Belgian I don't supposed you have any idea what the chance is of the placenta moving given that it is currently sitting pretty central over the cervix? The midwife sonographer at my scan seemed to look pretty dubious about the chances?

On the great buggy debate - I made a classic mistake with DD and bought a lovely plushy looking 3 wheeler (Mothercare Urban detour) and only used the blinking thing for 3 months because it kept getting punctures and took up the whole of the boot. Then I spent £50 on an Obaby which I have used everyday for the last year - just sold the Urban detour on for £50 and feel like I have done well (despite paying £270 for the wretched thing in the first place). So this time I have gone with the Maclaren Twin Techno with the hope that again, less will be more. However I expect that for the first couple of months DD2 will be in a sling and DD1 will still be in the Obaby!

Don't worry nauseous give it 3 months after the baby is born and you'll be a buggy debating pro! My advice is decide on your priorities (weight/manouvreability etc) and don't get swayed by the sales! Sorry, I'll shut up now.
