Brand new thread ladies!

Sunnydale don't feel angry with yourself. It can happen to anyone at any age. I am 37 and will be 38 when (all being well) this one arrives. You are not too old. Many many women have children at our age (looks at the range of ages on our list of due dates!). You are not a fool. You are someone who decided to have children when it was right for you and when you would be in a place to love and nurture them and be the best Mum that you could be.

I am so sorry for what you are going through and am sending you a big hug (even if hugs are not the MN thing to do!)

Thanks for all your kind messages - they mean a lot. I am sat here trying to look after dd, whilst trying to type this and trying not to cry too. Am so confused about these tests. It seems from what the doctor said (and to be honest I was so strung out that I may have failed to grasp the finer points) that even if the test comes back as saying the baby isn't Downs, it will still in all likelihood have a heart defect. The tests showed something called "reverse flow" - an indicator of Downs but also a problem in itself, even without Downs. Like an idiot I have of course googled the problem, but all I could find was medical theses and I didn't understand a word. I googled mumsnet too but could find only one reference so I guess it's a rare condition. Anyway I don't think I should be bringing doom and gloom to this club of pregnant ladies so I'm gonna try to find another thread (or start one) where it might be more appropriate to share my sadness and confusion, iyswim. Good luck to all and will check in from time to time to see how you are all doing.

Sunnydale - I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Please don't worry about "bringing gloom" to the thread, that is exactly what we're here for. Of course it would be lovely if this was a thread with only happy news, but that isn't the reality of pg. Bad things to happen, we are all aware of that, and you need more support when they do than the rest of us when things are going well. This is exactly the place you should be to share, your experiences are no less valid than ours.

I have no personal experiences of downs but dare I make the suggestion that you look for positive experiences of people who have had a child with downs as well. It may not be what you want and quite validly if the result is positive you may choose not to go ahead with your pg, that is a decision only you can make. However, to make such a decision you need as much info as possible and that includes positive stories, i think its so easy to be scared by the negative. I have read a few threads in the past few weeks where people who have a child with downs have posted so it may be worth starting a thread asking for positive experiences to get some kind of balance. I hope I'm not out of line suggesting that, it is just what I would want to do.

Actually this might be a useful thread and its still active. Eidsvolds post in particular is lovely and adds some real balance.

Sunnydale - You are welcome to post whatever you want to here!! totally agree with playing it would be wonderfull if all our news was good news, but unfortunatley this isnt often the case on these type of threads.

Please read Eids post on the above thread! i to believe you need arm yourself with all the info you can, in situations like yours knowledge is power!!! but you need to speak to chat with real people that have been there, googleing will just confuse and upset you.

Can i suggest that you start two thread to get a good balance!! one in pregnancy and one on special needs, i know for a fact that the mums on the SN board would be most imformative.

Sunnydale, I've also seen a few MN threads about Downs Syndrome recently. Thomcat's posts are always very special, if you search for her name. I also saw a link to this article Times article - do read, it's about a family who were where you are now, and who did have a DS with Downs. FWIW, I'm 37 myself, and am trying to figure out whether to have the tests. I second what Meep said. You are not a fool, you made the best choices you could. And post whatever you need to here.

Please don't follow this post up with sad messages and emoticons, I'm really OK...I've known in my heart something was wrong for some time and for now feel relieved that the uncertainty has gone and that the pain is over with. I'm a strong believer that everything happens for a reason and this baby just wasn't strong enough for whatever reason.

I'll be starting to TTC again just as soon as my body is ready .

Updating too - went for (pre-booked nuchal dating) scan today after had some bleeding on Wed, really thought the worst

however, things seem fine, little one bouncing around and they couldn't see any reason for the bleed

am further on than I thought - prob due to my short cycle, so my dd is 7th March

Sunnydale, I'm very sorry to hear your news, I can't imagine what you must be feeling, but truely will pray for the very best outcome. With regards to the 'reverse flow' is it by any chance reverse diastolic flow? If so I can tell you a little about that as a neonatal nurse, but either way, ask someone to explain it when you get your results tomorrow. I know it's really highly stressed at the moment, so try writing simple questions down that you can ask tomorrow, and if you MUST google, ask your consultant for an appropriate site you can look on... most drs have a list of informative sites to pass on to parents.

I'm having a private scan tomorrow as I fell over 3 days ago and have started getting bad abdo and back pain, plus a lot of my symptoms have gone am hoping everythings
okay and I'm just being paranoid? Spent all day in gynae ward only for them to tell me thay could keep me in for observation but couln't scan me till MONDAY!! So.. tomorrow we will see, please cross your fingers

Oh god everyone is having a bit of a shocker. I guess this kind of stuff always goes on at the 12 week mark as scans get done and we cross over into the "low risk" category milestone. I'm very sorry for people's loss and potential problems, and am thinking of you all, even though I know none of you from Adam. My scan is a week today, but it seems miles away...

SD-I don't really know what to say, but I hope everything is ok. Definitely go in with a list of questions ready to fire at the doctors.
