not a serious problem, maybe you should remind him of the whole gas leak, switch on a light, explosion scenario.

if the gas is off could you not go ahead with homebirth? what runs of gas in your house? do you have an immersion heating thing for emergency water heating? its more expensive but could poss provide the water for pool if required???? if you rung round friends and family now could you borrow some electic heaters? and despite maternity wards being stifling hot babies are supposed to kept quite cool re. cot death recommendations.

camping stove/micerowaveable stuff instead of cooking on gas hob.

Just some ideas to try and get you thinking of solutions if that is what you want, unless there is a nice alternative near you where you could enjoy a hot shower etc.

turtle23 · 14/03/2008 08:16

Shower is electric, so no prob, as is oven. Have electric heaters, just the stress is doing my head in. If we have the work done now they will have to rip the house to bits running all new gas line to hob and boiler. Midwife may say no due to state of house and water availability.

littleducks · 14/03/2008 08:55

hmmm... when are you due? you need to decide if its better to get it done now or wait and try with a newborn.

no back up electric water heater, we didnt realise til gas man came.....

would you prefer a WATER birth or a HOME birth?

it prob, seems awful but it will be ok and something you laugh about later, our car gearbox went completly just before dd was born and we had to borrow a real old banger for hosp. run, i was scared it would disintegrate at the time or we would get stopped by the police or something but all was ok and i laugh about it now. Dh had forgotten!

turtle23 · 14/03/2008 09:00

littleducks...i will take what i can get. Just care about his safety at this point. Water would be nice tho! Am ringing every company i can at the mo to find out prices and availability and how long. Grrr.

good luck!

tori32 · 14/03/2008 09:30

Turtle really sorry for your predicament. Can you hire an electric urn to warm water for the pool. I don't think the MW will mind the mess if you are in a different room.

news on MOBTK got a tx from her at 0836 this am, in labour and 8-9cm dilated. On way to hospital! yay!!!!!

JFly · 14/03/2008 09:39

Welcome baby Cooper! Congratulations, Jay, you must be thrilled! Were you trying to beat MB for biggest baby?

Turtle, so sorry about gas leak. It's not something to mess around with; I can't see why DH would take any chances. Throw money at the problem if you can, and just get it sorted so you're not stressing any more than you have to. It's just not worth the money/effort - and get DH to help! Hopefully it will all be up and running again soon and home birth will be back on.

Get out of the house if you can and sit somewhere relaxing, or go for massage. Try to take mind off that and do something nice for yourself.

HolidaysQueen · 14/03/2008 09:41

Oooh good luck MOBTK!

After a frustrating few days it looks like the babies have been kickstarted into action again this week

Turtle - so sorry your plans have fallen into disarray. I hope you can get it all sorted, but if not then I think littleducks question about what you prefer is a good one - which bit of your birth plan is really the most important to you? When we had to dash off to DH's parents earlier this week, I looked at all the stuff I'd got ready for hospital and in the 5 mins I had to decide I ended up grabbing just my TENS machine, medical notes and a nightie as my emergency bag. It made me realise that most of the stuff I want from labour/delivery is the stuff in my head (yoga positions, being able to move around, breathing techniques), not the home comforts like favourite t-shirts, moisturiser and bottles of lucozade that I have spent ages planning and packing. It was a good lesson for me to learn beforehand and I now feel like I know the things I am really going to need to get me through, rather than worrying about what I need for it to go perfectly IYSWIM.

Having said that, I'm hoping you find an angel of a tradesman who gets the job done in 2 days, doesn't charge a fortune, doesn't make a mess and keeps your midwife happy

JFly · 14/03/2008 09:43

Oh, wasn't paying attention properly - didn't notice you'd have to rip up gas line, etc., to fix it. Grrr. Well, hope that you'll be able to come up with some alternate plans that you feel comfortable with, just in case. Fingers crossed for you.

Go MOBTK!!

turtle23 · 14/03/2008 10:51

I think that I am just feeling sorry for myself. It isn't the end of the world if I don't get the birth I dreamt of, just sooo frustrating to have come this far before meeting a hurdle that doesn't even involve a malpositioned baby or high blood pressure. Am wondering whether I could just plead with the neighbours to run a hosepipe to initially fill pool then top it up from the kettle, etc. Will sort it out.
Go MOBTK go !!

Besides, as I am part of this thread my 9 days away due date is bound to be ignored by baby and I'll still be here in 2 weeks plus!!

'gratulations ibblebob and jaysthird and welcome Isobel and Cooper

good luck to MOBTK

timmyinatizzy · 14/03/2008 12:16

More babies yay!. Congratulations ibblewob and Jay. No wonder Cooper was happy to stay where he was. Gosh another 11lb er. Are the Marchers going for record weighing babies

I had a successful sweep this morning. Junior has moved from 3/5 to 2/5 since Monday and the midwife could feel the head when doing the sweep. She did say that the cervix is still closed though , but what with the show still going on anything could happen. I'm booked in for a repeat sweep on Tuesday, (my request), then an induction on Wed night/ thursday morning. Hoping not to get that far, but you never know.

I've now got Dh home until the actual birth as has some annual leave days to use up from last year. Not sure if this is a blessing or not! It was quite nice being able to potter around the house on my own!

Turtle - Hope that the gas gets sorted out in time for what you want.

Littleducks - How are you today? Has any of the bruising gone away yet?

littleducks · 14/03/2008 12:36

i'm fine now but have a bit of a confession to make:

yesterday my mil booked tickets abroad for a family wedding, she had talked about going but said she would not/ would wait a bit so she was def here to meet new baby, and has been waxing on about how much help should could provide for new babe and dd, which i tactfully neither gushed over or declined as she was honestly a bit of a nightmare last time, but is someone dd is comfortable with and safe even if fed junk! But she is now leaving on 29th my edd is 26th, im a bit miffed and am secretly hoping baby wont come till she is gone now, so she cant insist upon doing whatever she wants re visiting as she will be going away.

Then i feel awful as dh would love her to be here, he told her he wasnt that upset (being blokey) but i think he would be, especially since he dad died since dd was born and i think when this baby comes some emotions will turn up.

I am being pretty evil arent i? I suppose it doesnt matter too much as dh is dead set against an early induction unless proved def necessary so the baby will come when it wants anyway, but am bit confused by it all.

tori32 · 14/03/2008 12:48

turtle thats a good idea about the hose pipe. I would ask them. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

jay congratulations to you, wow, another impressive sized baby!

I went to see the MW yesterday and am now 2/5 engaged and baby is the right way round still so hopefully it will be all systems go for a VBAC Had a few pains/ cramps last night but all gone quiet again. Must have been sypathy for MOBTK!LOL

tori32 · 14/03/2008 12:51

Timmy hope you get some action soon

turtle23 · 14/03/2008 13:11

turtle I was starting to think the blardy pool was jinxed x

Prisci · 14/03/2008 14:45

ibblebob and jaysthird congratulation indeed, and me being worried about giving birth to an 8lb baby, really feeling like a chicken.

Littleducks, from what you are saying, you have not really done anything wrong. I can understand how the thought of MIL around can makes things more difficult rather than easier, trying to get to know your little one, learning to take care of him/her even if it is the second time, it is hard enough, someone else interfering/giving unwelcome advice etc... is probably not the best combination. and how long is her Holiday booked for, seeing LO a week or two after he is born is probably best, and in terms of DP, he is most likely to be so busy etc... for the first weeks that he won't have time to think much.

littleducks · 14/03/2008 14:54

It is very much a thought crime!

I just am a bit cross that she doesnt want to be here, when i know she will be on the phone every 5 mins micromanaging from afar, or trying.

And i have put up with loads of interfering through pregnancy thinking, that i need to keep her sweet as i may need help with dd if i have to stay in hospital or something.

But im just whinging as i dont have anything to do atm, want to be doing baby stuff! Will regret that soon i expect.

MarchNowFebMum · 14/03/2008 17:52

great advice/thoughts from holidayqueen for turtle and agree with prisci re mil issues for little ducks, it's normal to want to set boudaries with people you don't feel entirely comfortable with during this vulnerable time. i have nightmare mil tho so am a bit jaded ;.)

welcome isobel and cooper. good luck mobtk!have we heard from mmh? who is her text buddy?

am in middle of 3 week old growth spurt - sanam is constantly on the boob!

turtle23 · 14/03/2008 18:04

Hmmm...think MMH's text buddy might be cricketsmum and I haven't heard from her all day...maybe they're side by side in the delivery suite?
