Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
IsawSusiekissingSantaClaus · 13/12/2007 17:05

Mmm we're two weeks apart. How exciting! You're 37 weeks so you can just go with it if it comes! Excellent.

sabinar · 13/12/2007 17:17

on the topic of gadgets... what do we think re: TENS machines? I plan to get one but I'm not sure whether it's worth shelling out for the fancier varieties with lots of knobs and switches, or whether they're all much the same (assuming they are maternity ones, of course)

Any opinions amongst the group?

oh, also - I can imagine myself hopping in and out of bath and shower non-stop whilst in labour. Do I need to get a bunch of spare sticky things (don't know the technical term) for each time I put it on and off?

thanks!

gingemebells · 13/12/2007 17:42

Evening ladies. Our bedroom is all finnished and looks fantastic. Lovely green paper with circles evevry now and then . Slightly lighter paintwork. Beige eyelet curtains with brown circles every now and then. Cream and beige bedside lamps and light shade and lovely beach flooring with beige and brown rugs. I am very pleased
All it needs now is a moses basket with an ickle baby in to finnish it off
Its funny how you ladies are all kepping up with checking your weight. Im not one for weighing myself anyway but I wouldnt have a clue how much wiehgt I have put on!
I dont realy bother with things that bring on labour either.
Oh I got my Lily Pads breast pads on Saturday. Theyre fab. Wish I knew about them 2 ds's ago. A friend of mine, who is also a bf counciler, suggested I only use them at night though as they can cause engorgement if worn all the time.
Im going to get4 nursing bras this weekend too. Decided to get some Mothercare ones to start with and see how the bf goes. If Im decided to carry it on Ill go for the more expensive ones which everyone keeps recomending.
Things to bring on labour mmm A hot curry or Castor oil I would avoid unless you definately want to pooh during labour
Just out of curiosity sabiner why will you be in and out the shower/bath during labour? Bath maybe for pain relief. I only had a shower when it was all finnished.
Well Il be off just goround the chippy or sausage in batter and chips. Yummy!!

jinglebeller · 13/12/2007 18:06

not sure about the difference between the Tens machines Sabinar - My friend who is due today has bought one, and said i could borrow it! So maybe i need to get some sticky pads?!
I dont think you need new ones each time you attach, but would make sure any oil etc had been rubbed off in the areas?

Well today I had chinese for lunch with my dad, listened to and fell asleep to my hynobirthing cd and had a clary sage bath....Babybel has been very quiet today, trying not to worry, I have felt him/her move, but no-where near as often, will see how it is tomorrow and maybe call the midwife ???

Hope everyone is well xx

WeAllWantSomeFluffyPudding · 13/12/2007 18:37

Hi all, back from the scan but gosh, not sure I'm going to be able to do a proper catch up before ds's dinner!

It looks like I was absolutely right to push for a growth scan - LO is right up there in the 95th centile for size and is already around 6lbs 9oz...ok, these things are notoriously unreliable for weight, but all the measurements were bigger than the charts ie over 100th centile in most cases [fhsock]. So another big one [Fluffy tries to find 'panic' emoticon]...sigh.....

Of course, its good to have a decent bw baby but glad we've realised now, as ds's birth would probably have been less complicated if he hadn't been more than 2 weeks late. So I'd rather be induced at, say, 40.5 weeks if LO hasn't put in an appearance, than have another awful late induction and huge baby. Especially as they were pretty convinced that if this one went 2 weeks late then it would be a 10lbs something one!!!

The weird thing was going from the growth scan straight into my regular midwife checkup at the same hospital. I'm only seeing them every 6 weeks or so, with GP in between, so they didn't know I'd been referred for a scan. Anyway, first thing she said was "well, you look very normal, I guess that means we don't need to worry about large babies"!!!! . I pointed out I'd just been for a scan that suggested something rather different...to her credit the mw looked at the notes, said 'crikey, good thing you went for the scan!' and then asked to measure me anyway. Interestingly from the outside, I was measuring 33 weeks (am 34.5) so this might explain why it didn't occur to anyone last time that ds might be big. MW was quite amused that baby the size of LO wasn't looking big from the outside. I'm less amused as I feel very very full of baby!! MW also wanted to re-check me for GD, but properly this time (last time at the GPs I only did one blood test after fasting, not a 2nd one after sugar etc)...fine, but I've refused to head into central London in rush hour on the tube in the week before xmas, so I've agreed to ask my GP to do the test again, but with lucozade and an hour's break etc this time

DH says I have to admit to all of you that when the sonographer was explaining that LO fell into the "95th centile and upwards" category I asked 'how frequently does that happen?' at which they all (DH included) looked at me a bit oddly and said 'um, about 5% of the time'!!! ...oh dear...pregnancy brain....

Right really do have to go...but just quickly...

Gingeme - room sounds lovely

Susie - I used FILs non-maternity TENS and it was great!

Sabinar - am so with you on the not being in a hurry thing...altho more cos I need the time!!

Awen - lovely to hear from you, well done on keeping going

Amani - big hugs

Toomanyshoes - lovely to hear from you again

Hugs to Beller, Mrsmcn, Naetha, Lucky, Lolo, Madmouse, Lulu (loved the shoe story ) and everyone else...

Oh dear, can hear a very unhappy ds downstairs, had better run....xxxx

IsawSusiekissingSantaClaus · 13/12/2007 19:01

Sorry just popping in to say to Sabinar that Boots have an third of their maternity TENS machine at the mo. I've bought it - no idea if it's a good'un. Looks fine!

Lulubump · 13/12/2007 19:33

Congratulaitons, fruitful! I'm so glad that you're both doing well. Hope you're recovering and you've managed to see Theo since your last post.

Fluffy - so funny about your midwife!
Beller - I'm living vicariously thorugh your lunches
Gingeme - bedroom sounds divine.

Sabinar - am definitely not going for TENS. Had to have some nerve tests about a year ago, and they said it would 'feel just like a TENS machine', after which followed the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my life, during which I couldn't move, otherwise we'd have to start the test all over again. I was in so much pain, I couldn't even whimper, and just had tears rolling down my cheeks. The nurse ended up geting really upset seeing me in such a state , and needed to share my tissues.

Not sure what happened, or why - the hospital had no explanation, as that test was not supposed to be painful , but even thinking about a TENS machine makes me shudder!! Was all very weird, as I am usually quit egood with pain.

sideways · 13/12/2007 20:13

Fruitful - many congratulations on the safe arrival of Theo. I hope you are both doing really well and you get lots of cuddles very soon xx

Hello to everyone else. Haven't been writing on the thread for a long time (not that anyone seems to have noticed!), but have been reading it and following everyone's progress.

lilyloo · 13/12/2007 20:16

Oh wow Fruitful hope you have had some time with Theodore now looks like i just missed your post have had trouble getting on this site
Hope he is lovely and you are ok sounds like it's been a tough one!
Thanks for kind words ladies feel slightly better today will just have to wait results!
Went to see dd in her nursery nativity today and was chatting to another mum who has similair age dc's to me she asked me if i was having anymore pointed to bump and said yes 3 weeks on Sat!
Not really any more ideas for bringing labour on think you have quite comprehensive list there !
Well i wonder who's next

ayrshirelolo · 13/12/2007 21:13

Hello girlies!
Well, i have finally finished work!!... and am completely shattered! Funny how you pace yourself, isn't it? I'm gonna pop in next week anyway to see my boss (who's been on her hols for the last fortnight) but it won't really feel like work, as i'll take dd with me (i haven't taken her in to my office for about a year so it'll be nice to show her off a bit!)
It hasn't really hit me yet that i won't be back for ages, even when i put the "office assistant" thingy on my email to say i wouldn't be available till October 08, but i expect i'll start feeling better tomorrow when we finally dig the Christmas tree out of the loft! Have to go and buy a play pen though... not to put dd in, but rather the Christmas tree! Have a feeling with 2 under 2 we might find a few uses for it over the next wee while, especially as dd has taken to climbing everything she can!
Had the tour of the new maternity hospital last night and WOW..... was extremely impressed! We only got shown round the midwife led unit (fingers crossed baby somersaults and that's where we go!) but was gobsmacked at how groovy it is! All ensuite rooms, mats, birth balls, 4 or 5 pools (1 permanant, the rest inflatable) ambiant lighting, CD players, anything you want really, and if all goes to plan you can stay in your room for about 24 hours and then go home without going near the ward.... cross fingers for Lolo please.... last time ended up a bit pants and medical but would be nice to have the pool, gas and air and single ensuite room this time!
Mind you, object is a healthy baby and an ok me, so doesn't really matter how that happens!
Anyway, too tired to do a mrs mcj and send you all wee messages ... sorry!!, just wanted to say lulu LOVED the shoe story!!!! and fluffy, glad you went for that scan!! and fab to hear from all the folk who haven't been posting for a while... getting exciting, isn't it!!!!!
Big waves to everyone, Awen, lilyloo, Sab, Mrs mcj, toomanyshoes, naetha, amani, fluffy, mixed, barrister, lulu, beller, madmouse, lucky, gingeme, Katy and of course Fruitful, our Number 1 mum!! (and everyone else of course!!!)
Here's to a better sleep.... lolo xx

Awenamanger · 13/12/2007 21:29

Fluffy - glad scan went well (ds1 was above 95th too on scans and was 8lb12 at 38 weeks.. so he would have been a real whopper if term let alone 2 weeks late!)

Had busy housework day today. Feel full of energy atm. Dp is so not up for nooky.. he feels too weird about it.

LuckyStarOfBethSalem · 13/12/2007 22:15

Just a quickie from me!

FRUITFUL - Congratulations hunny!! When you feel up to it, let us know what happened. In the meantime sending hugs and good vibes (from both me and bump) to Theo and you for speedy recoveries.

nicky6 · 13/12/2007 23:30

fruitful congratulations so pleased for you

very jealous of those on maternity leave

Bad news is trial going into new year and we are starting back on 2nd - not quite how i planned it but there we are.

So been working too hard and doing precious little of anything else - i have put on 2.5 stone which is mad given the amount of runnign around i have been doing, but it does seem to be mainly in the bump and probably in my swollen fat fingers.

I must remember to try to get a size thing done when i go to see midwife on tuesday (also my birthday)

please may the baby not come early it is a complete madhouse here and we havent even bought half the stuff whihc is on the essential list but as i am still 6.5 weeks away i hope to be fine - but just have this niggling feeling that as soon as i stop for christmas the baby is going to think that that is its cue to arrive.

Anyway all well - still sleeping pretty well and sometimes throught the night!!!!!

Glad all the girls sound in top form and look forward to hearing news of more little bundles of fun.

MrsBiscuit · 14/12/2007 08:51

Woooohoooo, last day at work

Then it's six weeks of discussing last night's tv with myself, and spending a lot more time on here .

Will catch up properly later.

IsawSusiekissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2007 09:06

A quick message for MrsMc. I just read this on 'i am pregnant' website - in the 36 weeks pregnant bit. I thought it might make you feel happier -

Quote
The amount of amniotic fluid is at its maximum amount now and your baby may not be moving as much as she had been. As long as you still feel her movements every day, there should be no cause for concern.

So a kick under the desk is worth one in the bed!

sabinar · 14/12/2007 10:17

good morning all

working from home today, so have been here to receive two parcels this morning - feels like Christmas! One was a Chrissy present I ordered for DH and the other was some v cute clothes for LO I ordered a while back. Exciting

Am off to the osteo in an hour or so, she's still trying to sort out the rib pain - has definitely been making a difference though, and my ankle is almost back to 100% now which is great.

LO related missions for the day include ordering a TENS machine (still not sure whether to buy or hire but have decided to get the fanciest one that I can find... afterall, with a planned home birth, the TENS machine is one of my key pain relief systems... I figure I should get the best I can!). I think it may also be time to place the very NOT exciting order from Mothercare - chock full of pads of various descriptions, and disposable undies.

Am also trying to come to terms with the fact that I've now finished my NCT classes. I remember looking at those in the calendar and thinking the time would never come - and now it's been and gone. Funny how that happens.

Have decided will be perfectly happy if LO is a couple of weeks late now - as long as he doesn't put on a massive growth spurt between now and then!

Hope you're all well and happy days to everyone finishing up at work today!

jinglebeller · 14/12/2007 10:54

Morning all!

Hope everyone finishing work gets to put their feet up!
I ended up in hopsital last night as i really had only felt about 2 movements during the day..phoned the hopsital adn they said to go in and be monitored. 20 mins after being hooked up babybel started dancing around like a good en! Either a lazy boy, or a diva girl that likes an audience!!
All back to normal today, and loads of movements...

Hope everyone has a great weekend, im off for another lunch and some reflexology today, then dinner/dance tomorrow and a friend coming to visit on sunday! Enjoy what ever youre doing xxxx

Awenamanger · 14/12/2007 11:44

Woke throughout night with painful tightenings again. Not regular so just trying to ignore. Been busy again, got yesterdays washing all ironed, hoovered, cleaned kitchen and off to ds's school for xmas fete after lunch.

Jinglebeller - glad lo was ok

mixedmama · 14/12/2007 11:54

Hello ladies....

So depressed, no internet at home. Impossible to catch up as i am in the internet cafe but hope to catch up at some point next week when I can get to my mum and dads.

Not much going on here... painful cramps in legs at night, and relentless BH, doing lots of walking with DS but dont seem to be acheiving very much.

Hope you are all well and I havent missed too much but will catch up soon.

Love the Christmassy names everyone.

IsawSusiekissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2007 12:07

Hello ladies -

Glad LO was well, Beller. It's often the way, it seems. Better to be safe than sorry though.

Good on you Sabinar for getting a good TENS. The one in Boots now costs the same as hiring it. Glad osteo is helping.

Hi mixedmama - was wondering where you were

Hi AWen - glad you're keeping busy! Hope contractions not too bad. I'm getting some painful ones too and last night the shape of bump completely changed. I think she's dropped!

Hooray last day at work Mrs Biscuit!

Gingeme - sounds like you're putting all the finishing touches to house, LO and new mum wardrobe. LOL

Sideways - I wondered where you were! Sorry to hear from the other thread that you're still sick. Me too! Will be so happy when baby comes!

Lilyloo. LOL over bump confusion. Almost as good as my doctor eh?

Lol - Good news about the hospital and finishing work. Hope you are putting your feet up.

Lulu - that sounds horrible! Hope I don't react like that to shiny new TENS machine. I'd probably assume that that was what labour felt like!

Fluffy - hope GD test goes well. LOl over your maths!

Nicky6 - Sorry to hear about prolonged trial. Glad you're sleeping. LOL about baby taking Christmas as a cue to arrive.

I'm knackered - all I want to do is lie in bed. I'd be quite happy staring at the wall for hours. Think baby has dropped down as bump shape has changed and was able to eat a normal size dinner last night. Midwife coming on Sunday to write birth plan and see if I need a growth scan. I'm pretty sure babe's loads bigger.

Have a restful day all.

Amani · 14/12/2007 12:25

stupid stupid laptop shut down on me after i had written a nice long messgae - with no moaning mind you..

Amani · 14/12/2007 12:29

Awen - could this be it?

gingemebells · 14/12/2007 13:26

Afternoon everyone.
Is anyone thinking of getting any Arnicha or rescue remedy for after the birth? I have never taken either of these things but have been highly recomended to get some. Going to Boots tommorrow to get some to pack in my labour bag. Not sure weather to get some Raspberry tea too. Realy dont want baby to come before Christmas.
Going to Mothercare World later to buy my nursing bras. They have some realy pretty ones there. Got everything for baby then. Got some more moses basket sheets off Ebay last night. The lady who I leant my moses basket too can only find two sheets. Think I gave her about 7
Glad all is ok with you and your beany babys x

IsawSusiekissingSantaClaus · 14/12/2007 13:40

I knopw that arnica cream is ace on bruises so am going to get some tablets. I don't think it can do any harm. Does anyone know what strength to buy?

That's annoying about the sheets Gingeme! I am loath to borrow anything in case I lose track of stuff. Was a bit cross when one friend offered me muslins etc. I then said I wouldn't want to lose them or mix them up so I wouldn't take them and she then gave them to Oxfam. grrr

gingemebells · 14/12/2007 13:43

No idea what strength to get. In fact I didnt know they did different strenghths. Guess Ill ask the pharmacist when I get it.
