Ok question again, my fertility specialist only scanned me last Thursday as a favour, and she guessed at 7-8 weeks, I'm dying to know! At this early stage when 12 weeks seems forever away I would really like to know, baby was 11.8mm long last Thursday! Is there a scale of some sort to work out from?

Staceyk I know what you mean. I've been trying not to think too much about being pregnant but its not working! I have no symptoms and I feel great (better than normal in fact - no period, no pmt, marvellous!). I keep doing tests to make sure I'm pregnant (the 32p off the internet sort). And I am - but its so wierd! With dd I'd bled and had a scan by this stage so I'd seen that there was something in there.

You know those gadgets you can buy to listen to the baby's heartbeat at home? Do you think in 20 years time they'll have invented a little home scanner unit so neurotic pg women can sit at home and watch the embryo grow?

Urgh, had my first vomit this morning and the reality of being pregnant is beginning to sink in. Wish I hadn't watched SuperNanny the other night - maybe three kids isn't such a good idea

How's everyone feeling?

I have bought some travel sickness bands which seem to be working!! (I am now only sick once a day)

Looking forward to my first appointment with midwife in 2 weeks time.

At the moment it still doesn't seem quite real. I can remember feeling like this last time too, it wasn't until I had my first scan and saw DD on the screen that it all seemed real.

Hello, urm, I'm a bit nervous cos this is my first ever post on mumsnet!! I'm expecting in march too, about the 12th I think but I've got a week til I see the midwife to confirm. This will be number two, last time I didn't want to tell anyone until as late as possible, this time I'm finding it really hard to keep quiet!! I'm sooo excited!!

know what u mean about trying to keep it quiet. none of the other mums at the nursery where dd1 goes to knows, and it was hard not saying anything in the 4 weeks upto the holidays. but now i am wanting to shout it out.

my little sister went into next today, and spotted loads of newborn/0-3 clothes in the sale, so when she phoned i asked her to get me some, so now i owe her £50 lol. the clothes are so cute. cant wait till my scan, even tho its at 8.30am.

Morning All

I am actually posting on both Feb & March threads at the mo, as I'm not too sure. Hopefully will know for sure this week, I'm still concerned about no midwife,Think it's prob my fault cos I done things a bit akward.
when I got + HPT I called ferlitly specialist at hospital to see if I should carry on taking Metformin, she told me to go straight in, and it was her who scanned & told me 8 wks pg, and she arranged my 10wk scan and 12wk scan!
So no midwife been spoken about. What I am planning is Hospital this Friday (10 wk scan) and then go to GP's on Friday, hopefully with scan pic, and give him all details! Hopefully somewhere along the line someone will mention midwife??
I really want one, cos loads of questions, I am flying on holiday end of Aug, Do I need to tell insurance co I am pg?
I can't wait til this Fri, 1. because first time DH will see baby, 2. cos should find out proper date, I personally think I'm more like 9wks than 10. 3. Puts mind at rest that all ok! fingers crossed.

Congratulations bobblehat!

StaceyK - I haven't seen a midwife yet either. I have called to try and make an appointment, but was told that the midwife at our doctor's does not make any appointments until you are at least 10 weeks and they would not let me make an appointment in advance!

I have to call them again early next week to try and get an appointment for the following week.

Maybe you could try asking your doctor's surgery whether you can make a booking appointment with the midwife? They should at least be able to give you an idea of when you will see a midwife.

Hi out here too finally got to relax after first day of hols lets hope the good weather continues.
I had a little bit of spotting last night and a few cramping pains but everything seems to have settled down again today.
It has made me realise how much I really really want a third child though.

Oh fruitful I am exactly the same, trying to "forget" about it!! Who are we kidding.
This week is going soooo slow waiting for Friday to arrive for scan (9 or 10wks) but should help put mind at rest, and will find out exact date.
Still stressed that I have no symptoms at all.
Still wanting ciggies.
Still trying to pretend everythings normal.

hello to all newcomers to the march thread! congratulations! and remember (as my dh keeps reminding me) the first three months are meant to be the worst!

had a bad day yesterday, was just so unbeleiveably tired and worn out and as a result had my first actual bought of morning sickness. felt better by the afternoon and evening though.

i'm getting really impatient to tell people now. You know this theory of "don't tell people until after 12 weeks" - well, what is its basis? i mean why 12 weeks and not 10 or 11 or 13? when is everyone else going to tell everyone? also, do you get to hear the heartbeat at the first midwife appointment? i've got mine this week (i'll be nine weeks) and am hoping i get to hear it - that would be so exciting! i'm also hoping to have my scan at 11 weeks since my dh will be away in the 12th week. is it bad to have your scan too early - does it make a difference?

i hate having all these questions - and i've not yet found a book that answers them all!

I think the 12 week thing is for two reasons: first thats when most people get their first scan - and you know there really is a baby and its ok. Second, the risk of miscarriage goes down a lot after 12 weeks. Actually it's really high to start with (50%), goes down a lot at 3-4 weeks (around when it implants and you find out), down a lot more at 8 weeks, down again at 12 (I think). Couldn't find the percentages just now though.

Personally I think it would be awful to have a miscarriage or bad news at a scan and for my friends not to know why I was upset. And awful to say "guess what! I'm pregnant and its got xyz problems" - so people don't get the chance to be pleased about the pregnancy. I'd rather people knew already.

Thats it, I've convinced myself. I'm off to accost some complete strangers and tell them I'm pregnant...

fruitful · 27/07/2004 14:13

Ooh, just read your other questions! I think 16 weeks is about average for hearing the heartbeat - so you might at 9 weeks if the baby is in the right position but you might not - and your midwife might not think it worth trying.

Different areas do the first scan at different times and I've heard it done at 11, 12, or 13 so I guess they are all alright. In any case lots of women don't know how many weeks they are until the scan is done.

bobblehat · 27/07/2004 16:37

Do most hospitals offer the 10ish week scan? The one where I had my last did, but I really don't want to go there again. The other hospital would be in another health authority and I think they do things different there.
