So we shouldn't get too much newborn stuff then? I haven't actually got anything yet, but I don't know what I should get!

RasperryInAMelon · 17/01/2017 17:47

Oh jeeze fox granted I've been given so much stuff, but I easily have about 30 or so BlushShock

We don't have a tumble dryer though... I'm guessing still too many!

peasandquiet · 17/01/2017 17:48

MrsJW about 8 babygrows in newborn is plenty, i'm not sure we need vests as it's may will be pretty warm, if there is a heatwave I suppose then would just put them in a vest so maybe just one pack of vests (Tesco vests are ace & a bargain) try to stick to a similar colour theme for ease of washing. One dark babygrow to wash on its own is a little annoying!

RasperryInAMelon · 17/01/2017 18:12

Ah when I say 30 I mean grows - a mixture of long and short sleeves and some with long legs too

EsmesBees · 17/01/2017 18:51

Haha! Yes I should rise. Someone somewhere must be after a bag of third hand baby clothes!

I don't think the NHS recommends counting kicks as such but monitoring and reporting if the movements decrease or increase: here.

Mrsjw you won't need many newborn clothes (obvs depending on the birth weight) as they grow really fast at the start. Plus it will hopefully be warm so good drying weather.

FoxMulder · 17/01/2017 19:37

30 ShockShockGrin

I thought babygros always had long arms and legs? Are we talking about different things?

I held my friend's newborn today. He was so tiny, he was like a doll. You forget how small they are!

RasperryInAMelon · 17/01/2017 19:39

What do you mean by a vest fox?

TheTantrumCometh · 17/01/2017 19:45

I'm really crap at keep on top of the washing so 13 just wouldn't be enough Blush

I don't know what size clothes to buy. DD was expected to be big so I bought mainly 0-3 months with a couple of newborn bits. She was just shy of 9lb but the 0-3 was swamping her. I remembered that for DS so just packed newborn stuff and he was 9lb 13oz and too long for all of it Shock. DH had to make a trip home later that day and get all the 0-3 month stuff and bring it. This time we're starting from scratch and so far I've just bought 0-3 month but I'm not sure whether to get a couple of newborn bits, too Confused. So confusing!

In good news I picked the pushchair today, though didn't buy it as I couldn't decide on a colour. I was glad I tested them all though as my favourite had been the Quinny Buzz xtra but I hated it in the shop.

EsmesBees · 17/01/2017 19:47

I had that recently fox when I held a friend's newborn. I put him on my shoulder and almost tossed him over. You do forget how light and helpless they are. So beautiful though.

I just got my IKEA nursing chair and stool. It's so comfortable. Although think it might need some extra cushions. I have memories of having to sit almost build upright at the start to get her in the right position to latch.

EsmesBees · 17/01/2017 19:50

Have you got some 0-1 month bits tantrum? I found DD was in that much longer than newborn so may be a better investment.

Wow 9lb13! Well done you.

RasperryInAMelon · 17/01/2017 20:05

Esme what chair did you go for? Smile

EsmesBees · 17/01/2017 20:12

The poang armchair and stool raspberry.

WishIWasSleeping · 17/01/2017 20:17

We have the maxi cosi pebble plus (I size) which my little one is too big for now. We've just spent 2 weeks deciding on the next size up car seat! Confused worse then choosing a baby car seat as I knew which pushchair I wanted first time around so I knew it should fit, and I thought the silver cross own was already heavier without a child in it, although my friend brought it and her preemie baby who's the same age but nowhere near as big as my princess and it looks like it has more room. I'll just leave it as that her heights not the reason we're getting a new one! CakeBlush
Also a fan of swaddling, I just used any blanket we had lying around. Mums a knitter so we always had a couple.
For those of you buying new clothes, people generally bring newborn or 0-3 clothes when they come to meet baby, so in my experience it's best to hold off on outfits and stick to vests, socks, bibs, mittens and babygrows! They'll usually be a couple of vests you'll probably need to throw away anyway! Hmm
I BF but she didn't latch properly and just used to spill milk out of the sides of her mouth so we always used a bib. Luckily it never stopped us feeding and never made me sore. My first soreness was when she was cutting her teeth and she bit me! Halo then they get stained up quickly when weaning!
I'm in the East Midlands, so don't think I'm near anyone, but will try and update the spreadsheet when I'm at work as my phone is stupid.
Can I also be added to the FB group please? I keep seeing who I'm supposed to tell then I get distracted!
The little rascal had her 1yr jabs today so she's gone for an early night... I'm not hopeful for an all nighter!

Nurse15 · 17/01/2017 20:25

I have an IKEA poang (spent most of my uni study time on it!) and I've just moved it to the baby room! Comfiest chair ever! Think I will get the matching footstool also!!

savagehk · 17/01/2017 20:57

Re clothing, if you buy from different places the sizes vary (wildly!). I eventually gave up on the labels and sorted them by size order (i.e. put them all on the bed and sorted them smallest to largest). So it's very hard to say what size you'll need. I had a chunky baby first time round and expect the same this time. I'm probably one of the few people who didn't get on with vests (he was naturally a 'warm' baby so any of this extra layer malarkey and he would sweat - still sweats very easily now! - and to me vests were just another layer of complexity in every nappy change). I much preferred separate top-bottom combos.

FoxMulder · 17/01/2017 21:17

Raspberry I mean like the base layer with either long or short sleeves with poppers between the legs. Like this! DS would wear his for a day or more. I mean, they don't sweat and he wasn't a pukey baby (and we didn't have many poonamis!).

We didn't have any outfits, it was babygros all the way until he was crawling.

RasperryInAMelon · 17/01/2017 21:45

Ah - I get you fox, I call them babygrows too. But yes, I've got sooooo many of them 🙈

Nursery is all prepped and ready for the decorators anticipated arrival in the morning!

I didn't buy any newborn stuff for DS he went straight into 0-3 (he was 8lb7) which was a bit big. This time I have a few newborn romper suits but everything else 0-3. It's always hot here and assuming this one will be in a sling getting body heat most of the time so no layering required. Frankly either a babygro or a two piece outfit is easier to put on a newborn than a wriggly toddler!

Northernexile · 18/01/2017 07:24

Both my two were 6lb 10, and we used newborn for a wee while, maybe about three weeks, then up to one month for another few weeks (think that size was up to about 10lb), then 0-3 months for a good couple of months. I wouldn't buy much in newborn, but I definitely needed a bit in the up to one month size.
I don't expect this baby will be too much different size-wise as I don't seem to make big babies, but if you thought you might be having a 10lb-er it would be a different story!

Brightsmoke · 18/01/2017 08:16

Very exciting Rasperry! We need step by step pictures (mainly because I need boredom distractors at work Grin )

Im curious too Rise, I know they don't say count the kicks, but how many weeks should we be worried if there is reduced movement? Yesterday and today I don't think baby has moved so much, but I know being back at work I don't notice it so much as I do when sitting around all day, but is there a week where reduced movement should be a panic? If that makes sense Confused

1004Rise · 18/01/2017 08:36

I agree Bright, we need step by step pictures to get us through the day Rasperry (although as I type I realise you're probably at work so won't see any of it!)

Bright it's on my midwife question list when I see her next week, but the answer machine message they have is if you have reduced movement after 24 weeks then call the hospital, so I think it's that same magic number. I still don't really understand how you know, but maybe that's because I haven't felt baby move on a regular basis yet. Though now from the pounding I got yesterday I'm convinced it's a boy Hmm

Been looking at clothes sizes on mothercare, wow it's confusing! How are you supposed to know if you'll have a 7lb baby or a 10lb baby (hoping for the former obviously!) Can the midwife give you an idea from your measurements?

Still haven't bought anything! List is getting longer, but more specific which I guess is progress!

RasperryInAMelon · 18/01/2017 08:47

I'll be keeping tabs don't you worry ladies! DH works from home so I can have him up there every few hours or so taking pictures of course - I too need something to keep my mind bowling over Smile

savagehk · 18/01/2017 08:48

Experienced midwives may be able to give you an indication of size, but predicting sizes of babies seems to be an art not a science. Even growth scans are often inaccurate. My personal experience is that I was exactly the same size at birth as my son... (and my hubby and SIL were bigger), so worth asking your family history?

Adventuregame · 18/01/2017 08:59

Suffering from work boredom here too. I have a favourites list now on the mothercare website and the Kiddicare website - gives me something to do. It's actually a really good way of having a list of what I need. I've got a cot mattress on there for example just to remind me I need one rather than it being the chosen one if that makes sense !
