No it is mainly for fat elderly differs. If you don't have any reason for them to test you for diabetes you will probably escape it. I never had it last time and I am not fatter now but I am 35 now.

SinkyMalinks · 20/03/2014 14:17

I didn't. At booking the midwife thought I would, because of the pcos, but apparently that's old guidelines- although I think some areas still do it for that.

maamalady · 20/03/2014 14:27

I'm just heavy, bugs - despite midwives' incredulity, it seems I have a high enough BMI to warrant the GTT. It comes of being short and heavy-set, I think, I've never been on the light side even when I was quite slender.

Thanks, Kat, that's useful! I'll make sure to take my book... And maybe a sandwich for as soon as I'm allowed to eat! Are there just the two blood tests, or three?

I just had two, two hours apart. Different hospitals might have different procedure though.

SinkyMalinks · 20/03/2014 16:45

Had sweep. Was fine. Now more waiting. Induction booked for 31st. Feels like this baby is never coming out.

CatsCantFlyFast · 20/03/2014 18:17

Sinks did they give you any indication of the state of your cervix? also was the induction booking a conversation/option or a done deal?

Frank - hope today went well with the bf people - did it help? How you getting on otherwise?

SinkyMalinks · 20/03/2014 18:29

Cervix low and soft. 1cm dilated but still a neck so needs to shorten further. Head less engaged than last week Hmm 2/5 now rather than 1/5. No such thing as tmi with the PESH! She managed a "good" sweep though, and am getting plenty of contractions now, so we'll see. Think that's quite common though, so not raising my hopes.

I was asked if I was happy for a sweep today, and have been booked again for next week. I agreed to induction, but knew I would so don't know what the options would be if I'd refused. The date was not my choice -I still want my march baby!

FrankelandFilly · 20/03/2014 18:48

Sinks sorry to hear baby is not showing signs of shifting, thinking lots of dilatory thoughts for you.

Boob Skool was good thanks, the consultant helped with my latch and technique and had a good look at E. She said she has a minor tongue-tie which is of the type that can resolve itself as she grows but has given me a referral to a NHS specialist to give to my GP. She said the waiting list is about 3 weeks so it may have sorted itself in which case we can cancel the referral. She also said the lack of poo (4 days since the last dirty nappy) might be because she's not getting to the fatty hind milk, which should keep her bowels moving. They've shown me some baby massage techniques that can help with constipation/wind so I'm going to try those, otherwise it's off to the GP tomorrow for a suppository, poor little mite.

In other news, and I'm sure you'll understand if I go "off radar" for a while, we've found out today that HWHNN is being deployed to the desert place beginning with A on 1st June. To say I'm devastated is an understatement. He'll be gone for 6 months, returning in December, plus he also has to do a month's worth of pre-deployment training in Germany during May and we've no guarantees that he'll get home every weekend. So I'm facing a significant portion of the rest of the year as a single parent and at the moment I'm alternating between crying and wondering how the hell I'm going to cope.

It all truly sucks Sad

CatsCantFlyFast · 20/03/2014 18:56

Oh Frank that's fucking horrible, I'm so sorry. I really am lost for words.
Glad to hear today helped though

SinkyMalinks · 20/03/2014 19:17

Oh frank. That's shit. I have several friends with similar jobs. Do the powers that be know how little the foal is? 6 months is such a long time Sad

They do know, it's not a factor in their planning considerations. Even if I was pregnant it wouldn't make a difference, they'd just say they'd let him come back for 2 weeks once I'd given birth.

KatAndKit · 20/03/2014 20:41

Frank i am sorry about the desert trip. A friend of mine had the same happen to her when her baby was 7 months. Only a 4 month trip not 6 but still, it is a crappy thing to happen. You will cope though, you'll be great. Do you have any support where you live?

eurochick · 20/03/2014 21:02

I was scheduled by my NHS mw to have the GTT. Not sure why. Probably because I am a geriatric differ. I was in 2 minds. I will struggle enormously with fasting, and my blood sugar will crash, but maybe that is a reason to have it? However, I have been living with my odd blood sugar for 20+ years and know how to keep it stable. My private mw doesn't want me to have (presumably that would change if my pee indicated sugars).

sinks you still have loads of time to go into labour yourself. Loads. And most women do.

frank that is shit. The same thing happened to my BIL. That was a 6 month tour too, although he did get a break for R&R in the middle. He missed his baby's first birthday while he was away. :( His wife is far less of a coper than you and had a bit of a meltdown but managed. You will be fine. But it's still shit. x

FriendofDorothy · 20/03/2014 21:17

Oh Franks I am sorry and that is shitty.

Whilst I know it doesn't help with practical stuff we will always be here for you to let of steam etc.

FriendofDorothy · 20/03/2014 21:21

Oh I have to have the GTT too. It's cos I am fat.

CatsCantFlyFast · 21/03/2014 01:20

Sorry Sinks, looks like I'm going to beat you to it. My waters have gone

ALittleFaith · 21/03/2014 05:39

Oooh good luck Merk! Have you told the hospital?

SinkyMalinks · 21/03/2014 06:47

maamalady · 21/03/2014 07:55

Oh, merk, how exciting!

That sounds utterly shit, Frank, I'm so sorry the powers that be are sending HWHNN away for so long :(
