Wow - congratulations angry - Isla is a pretty name and a cuddly newborn to snuggle too :)

mean it's not the actual birth and labour that worries me - it's the waiting for it to get started!

13loki · 25/11/2013 14:32

Congratulations angry Lovely name

kchapper5 · 25/11/2013 14:33

Congratulations angry love the name Isla :) xx

mumoftwoboysS · 25/11/2013 14:37

Congratulations Angry very jealous of your newborn cuddles- and a lovely name, I agree!

Nom if you're reading this-I know you meantioned breast pumps a few days ago but this thread moves so quickly!

what did you recommend again? My friend was going to lend me hers (not sure if she has an Ameda or the other one that sounds like it- Amadela?) but anyway, it hasn't arrived in the post so I guess she's forgotten. But then I started to think about open/closed systems and borrowing used breast pumps- it's probably not a wise idea anyway.

So I'm looking online and trying to figure out which one is good and not too expensive! I guess my budget is £100 max but some of them are over that. I looked at the Avent electric single pump system

www.mothercare.com/Philips-AVENT-SCF332/01-Comfort-Single-electric-breast-pump/562104,default,pd.html#q=breast%20pumps

it actually sells on ebay for a LOT less. But not sure if it'll be good enough. The problem is I don't know how long I'll use it for- with 2 failed attempts at bf I found a pump useful for helping with engorged breasts and also for when my boobs were too sore to feed but I also found the manual pump I had pretty useless and I don't know if that contributed to me giving up (because of the soreness I resorted to pumping but then wasn't getting enough out so gave up) so perhaps I should invest in an electric one. The other reason for getting Avent is I have tons of Avent bottles so could use them to collect the milk/feed baby.

If I bought a Medela for eg. it'd have different bottles wouldn't it?

Also read a review about the Ardo Calypso saying how great it is but don't know if you've heard of it.

mythnomore.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/ardo-calyspo-breast-pump-review.html

I was initially worried about open/closed systems but now don't think it really matters does it as I shouldn't sell it on after anyway (according to some people)

mumoftwoboysS · 25/11/2013 14:50

Actually Nom just found your post about breastpumps so had a look at the Ameda. Also found the Medela swing on Amazon at only £86 so might be the best option?

www.amazon.co.uk/Medela-Swing-Electric-Breastpump-Calma/dp/B000LPZTQY/ref=pd_cp_by_0

I can't imagine needing a double one as I won't be going back to work/pumping loads

extracrunchy · 25/11/2013 15:13

Angry congratulations! Isla is a lovely name. Glad you're comfy at home. Annoying about the Tupperware!

Mumoftwo I got the Avent Comfort - haven't tried it yet but hope it's good as can't return it now it's all sterilised and unpacked...

I had 36wk MW appointment this morning. Long walk there (doing everything I can to get things at least pointing in the right direction!) - she reckons next ten days or so. I'm scared to get my hopes up!

DH also just heard his job no longer exists as of Feb, which isn't great timing Sad however, power cut at his office means he's coming home early so he can deal with DS for a bit!

Grump.

extracrunchy · 25/11/2013 15:17

Oh also mumoftwo I had the Medela last time and liked it to begin with but found the cup/shield things very hard and uncomfortable, so got soft comfort ones (now discontinued I think) and they're constructed so that there are glued together bits that eventually fall apart with sterilising, which was annoying. Also, even if you don't want to sell on, I found a little bit of milk would get in the tubes because of the open system and was almost impossible to clean out properly so I worried about germs...
That said, a lot of people love it!

NomDeClavier · 25/11/2013 15:36

mum I would never get an open system, not just because you can't sell it on, although if you're buying second hand it's obviously a consideration, but because the Bastard Thrush can get into the motor via the tubes and you can't sterilise the motor. The only way to kill thrush is to sterilise everything that cones into contact with the milk and if it's got into the motor then it can just cycle round.

I've never used the ardo but it's supposed to be good.

I decant into bottles or bags anyway so brand compatability didn't matter for me. Also at the beginning I didn't pump, I hand expressed, so it was going directly into bottles.

Congratulations angry! Isla is a lovely name.

I don't know whether I'll miss pregnancy - I guess I'm not banking on this being my last, and it's not my first, so there's no incentive to savour it!

Alyssa1978 · 25/11/2013 15:41

Huge huge congrats angry jealous of the baby snuggles and isla is a georgeus name. Hope you're feeling we'll xx

Chelsealady · 25/11/2013 16:01

Congrats angry love the name Isla it was my first choice when i found out i was having a girl but then my friend selfishly stole it! So now still thinking of a name....hmmm.

MrsShrubs · 25/11/2013 16:09

mum I've just bought the avent single electric from mothercare because its on offer there at the moment, it's got something like 20%-30% off. I was going to buy the medella swing but the cost of the avent was just so much better with the money off.

Congratulations angry hope you're all doing well Flowers

Just had a meltdown and burst out into tears, think the lack of sleep last night hadn't helped, just want to speak to DH but he's scrubbed all day -started at 7 finishing at 9 tonight and the one time he did call I was in tesco and my signal just kept dropping out so we couldn't talk. Need a hug Sad

MrsShrubs · 25/11/2013 16:41

chelsea my friends called her little girl Ayla which isn't too dissimilar to Isla and sounds just as pretty

13loki · 25/11/2013 16:56

mrsshrubs I'm so glad DH is leaving work the second he can and it's only 20 minutes away. Just found out someone at work has fucked up and I am the only one who can currently set grades for my 4 classes. They had better fix it, I I won't be doing it!

mumoftwoboysS · 25/11/2013 16:56

dammit, just replied on my phone and it didn't work.

anyway, I've looked online at the Phillips website and it seems the Avent breast pump is a closed system so that's good. (didn't think about thrush- thanks Nom)

Yeah MrsShrubs the discount makes it much more appealing! Tho the Medela is only £10 more on Amazon....

but i've googled it and it seems that some people don't think the Medela Swing is a closed system so maybe that's off the list.

mumoftwoboysS · 25/11/2013 16:59

ooh and if anyone else is confused/not sure about which breast pump to buy I've just found this website with reviews from mums so might be helpful!

www.breastpumpcomparisons.com/

froubylou · 25/11/2013 17:17

Congratulations Angry! Such a pretty name.

I just have the manual Avent breast pump at the min lol. Looked at the electric ones and just couldn't bring myself to spend that amount on something I may not need or use and not be able to sell on. Plus I work from home anyway so can't see that I would ever need to pump an awful lot and I did mixed feeding with DD last time which worked for me. And I think in some areas if you do feel you need one you can hire them? Not sure. And this will be my last baby so not as if I will be able to use again.

Been at hospital all afternoon. Baby hasn't turned and is still very much breech. Norty baby. So upshot is I am booked for a C Section on 13/12!!!! Fuck! 2 and half weeks away doesn't seem very far at all.

Nice to have an end date and know baby will be out for christmas and by the time DD breaks up from school in 20/12 I should just about feel human. But I don't know if it is more or less nerve wracking having an end date. Gulp. Off to read my leaflet and also hide the needle I have been given that I have to self inject. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

PistachioTruffle · 25/11/2013 17:32

Congratulations Angry and baby Isla!

Wow Frouby, you know your baby's birthday already!

MrsShrubs · 25/11/2013 17:33

loki luckily his hospital is only 10mins away but when he says 9 o'clock finish it will no doubt be more towards 10pm, things always overrun. He did manage to call me again though so feel better for a quick chat with him Smile that and a cup of tea and some dairymilk therapy!

MrsShrubs · 25/11/2013 17:34

frouby the end is in sight!!!

Alyssa1978 · 25/11/2013 19:14

Must be nice to be able to plan for babies arrival frouby its a shame babs didn't turn but never mind.
What needle do you have to inject? Sounds scary, I hate needles Confused

I have the tommee Tippee manual breast pump, anyone know anything about it? I got it for ds2 but never got around to using it Sad
I didnt want to fork out for an electric one either frouby I'd be gutted if bf didnt go as planned and I couldn't sell it on either.

How's everyone holding up? Any cramps or signs?
Mine have gone AWOL Hmm

Xx

LadyMedea · 25/11/2013 19:16

So this is what I'm hanging on to a lot at the moment. This is your chance of going into labour that week if you are still pregnant at the start of the week...

37 weeks - 11%
38 weeks - 25%
39 weeks - 46%
40 weeks - 59%
41 weeks - 58%
42 weeks - pretty much 100%

It is based on US stats from Emily Oster's book but that's good enough for me. So I'm 39 weeks on Thursday... Hanging on to the nearly 50% chance of meeting baby that week!

meandbumpy · 25/11/2013 19:23

Oh bohemian get you, that is frustrating!

Congrats on getting your date frouby

mumoftwoboysS · 25/11/2013 19:49

alyssa and frouby I think manual breast pumps are ok if you're not gong to be using it a lot. I didn't get on with my manual Avent one as my boobs/nips were already so sore and I couldn't seem to pump much out. Since I'm prone to soreness I think I need an electric one if it's going to work.

lady I'm going to be looking at those percentages every week! I'm hoping I'll be a week early so going to start using all evacuation props then (pineapple, curry, sex!)

Gannetgob · 25/11/2013 20:14

Congratulations to those who already have their babies. Hopefully you are all doing well and enjoying every minute!

I have bugger all going on. No cramps, no show, no waters, nothing. Sweet FA. I'm not uncomfortable or anything though, so I suppose that's good. I just want to meet my baby now!

Anyway, I have decided that tonight will be the night. I'm going to think contracting thoughts!

Hope everyone else is ok/not suffering too much!

Chelsealady · 25/11/2013 20:34

How far gone are you Gannet?
