LondonMrs I think bras that impede the ducts are a problem, like underwire. Bras per say I don't think are. Your MW is probably the best source of advice. Would you consider something like a Belvia bra? - I have 1, not very flattering but no tight spots which I find very comfortable at the moment.

Elpis A man who does not respond to wiles...Shock. I have no words...

I've been shopping a lot lately and looking up recommended products. Can I give some unasked for advice on the shopping front? I see Mumsnet give the milton tabs 3rd place in the sterilising kit for recommended products. This is what I used when I BF DS and I will definitely be going this route again;

  • When you fill the bucket with stuff, and later remove 1 item (like a soother) the other items remain sterile. In the electric/steam/microwave ones the contents are only sterile for a certain length of time, which I think is shorter if you open the container.
I imagine this worked fine when all the bottles for the day were made up at one time in the morning. The recommendation (2 yrs ago) was not to make the day's supply at one time but as needed. The downside is that there is Milton on the plastics and they do smell of it, but DS never seemed to notice.

I had a pale blue bucket with lid from a baby shop. I drew a black line (on the outside, that I could see from inside) at the 5L level so it was easy to change the water, no measuring etc. I used a plastic pasta spoon to get things out.
This method comes 3rd in Mumsnet recommended even though all the feedback is 5 stars - it is just there are less comments on this method.

It is also the cheapest, and if you find you don't take to it, you've only bought a bucket, you can always use it to soak laundry (I'm thinking poo...)

DH's mum is on the phone. When they were here at the weekend we were talking about plans for when the little makes an appearance and I was saying how I had read up that sugary snacks were good as gave you energy boost during labour and a lot of people recommending jaffa cakes so had bought a few boxes when I did the Tesco order. Obviously planning on stocking up on carbs in the early stages (pasta etc) before I get to hosp as that's more sensible. Can only hear DH's side of the conversation but laughing (easier than crying) cos she's obviously discussing the nutritionalmerits of a restricted diet that consists of just jaffa cakes. Give me strength! All I can hear is DH saying "that wouldn't be all she would be eating" and discussing how I've already said I would be back on the diet waggon after the birth etc. Nothing like giving a complex to someone who's struggled with weightloss most of their life..

Anyway...

32, 31+1, #1, horrendous heartburn and an overwhelming urge to kill my MIL

ShellWeDance · 27/08/2012 21:20

Evening all,

Londonmrs I think we're having identikit pregnancies - the leaking problem started for me this weekend too and I'm also wondering where bubs has moved too. I'm hoping not breech as there seems to be a bit more baby on both sides whereas before it was definitely on the right side.

Thanks for the advice on sterilising Lisbeth, have been thinking about it a lot this week as trying to decide whether to get one of these starter bottle kits. It does seem like the Milton option is a lot less faffing around which I'm sure is a godsend with a newborn.

Elpis Glad you had a text but I would be might peed off with DH leaving without a goodbye. You sound like you have a similar relationship to me so I feel your pain. In fact DP has left me at home to go to the pub tonight which I'm not impressed with as I would have liked a nice end to the BH together but there you go.

Crazy That is outrageous! I can't believe these people aren't embarrassed that you're basically free childcare, particularly when they don't even know you! Thank goodness you're getting out of there.

Happy moving Mickey! There's lots of brave ladies moving around this time, am impressed.

Yomping That is a big snail tally! We saw lots yesterday and wondered why they came out in the rain. It's apparently so they don't drown in their waterlogged area but also so they can come out and meet friends!

Sorry not to catch up with everyone. Had a nice day picking up some baby bits and also got my free changing bag from Boots which I was very excited about, it's not that great but I love a freebie!

WantAnOrange · 27/08/2012 21:29

Kyyria that's so funny! How long does she think your labour is going to last!

Hi everyone,

I promise not to be all me, me, me today (I have been somewhat self-absorbed this week!). I am SO relieved that the two biggest moves are DONE and nothing got broken and we have mostly unpacked and I LOVE our new house. Happy. All we need now is for my flat sale to go through (touching lots of wood) and then financially it won?t be as scary.

Anyway, how are you all? I hope all UK folk have enjoyed the bank holiday and those who aren?t in the UK are delighted that Monday is over.

DF redeemed himself on Saturday afternoon by not going to his race after all and instead helping out with a mountain of jobs (tip, charity shop run, ikea, building furniture, etc etc), all with good nature and a smile. He is now sky high in brownie points and is racing tomorrow night instead (bring on GBBO!!).

Smorgs Caen to Toulouse? Wowsers. That is epic indeed. I shall not mention it to DF or he will get ridiculous ideas of what we might do on our honeymoon or similar!

Elpis Humn. I can see why you wouldn?t be best pleased. Tricky time. Hopefully baby stays where he is!

Interesting re sterilising lisbeth. We have been given a microwave one by my sister (and a microwave) so I figure I?ll give that a try. But Milton may be a good other option.

Huffle impressed with your stamina at the wedding. I bailed at about 10pm at the wedding I was at a few weeks ago ? just too tired. And I?m not sure an out-of-date bottle of Sainsbury?s tonic water counts as a treat? Chuckles. Not sure what I was thinking!

Fjord I hope you?re getting the hang of GD now ? I do really feel for you, trying to get to grips with a whole new eating plan. Sounds tricky, but keep at it ? there must be a website with folk who?ve experienced this who can suggest recipes etc too? I guess..

Aw bella re the village show ? sad to miss it this year but sure you?ll be back next year!

Kyrria Absolutely know what you mean re wriggling ? proper squirming in there sometimes and I can see my stomach move. Odd. I hope you enjoy NCT ? we?ve definitely found it more fun than we?d thought it?d be.

yomping UGH re the 69 snails. HOLY COW.

Mickey I hope the move went well and you?re enjoying your own space. Yay for that. And Angelico I hope your move in after renovations has gone well too.

Umn. crazypaving that seems unreasonable to me. Much sympathy.
Seeing everyone?s talk of hospital bags etc, I should get packing I guess, though I feel that at 30 weeks there?s plenty of time. I hope. Definitely going to steal Bella?s OH idea of jelly babies though!

Hello to anyone else I?ve missed. Off to bed with me now. Sleep well amongst mountains of pillows, ladies!

37, #1, 30 weeks.

Beccus · 27/08/2012 22:10

hi ladies, so much to catch up on!

Fjord, the GD just sounds horrible. Food and pregnancy is such a hard thing to manage at the best of times without the GD bollocks - of course none of us want to pile on the pounds, but we are hungry alot, and let's face it, a lot of other treats are out of the question when preggers, so it'a hard to say no to a tempting snack. As for exercising, who feels like doing anything vaguely strenuous at the moment??? I think u are amazing for all the effort you are putting in and should be proud of yourself for trying so hard. I would be f*cking hating it too and feel massively ripped off i can't eat that cake when i already can't have half a bottle of wine over dinner, fois gras, feta, half of the products in the deli, a sneaky drunken fag and all the other things we can't have.

kyria, i too have been copping a bit of a hard time about my hospital bag snacks....fuck 'em, it's not like we are going to be lolling around eating cake, we need our energy!!!

elpis, congrats for not having a complete meltdown during the wrong train or leaving without saying goodbye incidents.....that would have been meltdownsville for me for sure.

midget, what a nasty scare for you, trust all is ok now?

On the uncomfortable front, i have to say i did not enjoy the 3 hr train ride to and from devon this weekend, or being unable to laze around as much as i would have liked to at mil and fil's house...they were lovely, only issue was their 2 seater sofa i hogged as much as possible, was too short to stretch out on. However, they had a supersoft bed my hips loved - i get this pain at night that feels like there is too much weight going through the sticky outy bit at the top of my thigh bone, but it was much better with softer mattess....and seriously, comfort now depends on being able to get into sidelying with a sh1tload of pillows infront and between legs for support.

huffle, i've had no boob leakage either. Leakage sounds like a PITAPOS, but can any of the 2nd time mummies reassure us that our milk will come when it's needed?

thanks lisbethfor starting the list :)

Dont know where to put myself on the EDD list as having a ELCS sometime in the next 3-6 weeks?

WOW.......my little lady has been going absolutely CRAZY all day :) :) :) had punches, kicks, wriggles and flips all over my bump!! Starting to feel ever so slightly sick by it all now but I'm absolutely loving it at the same time, who needs the TV when you have got a baby bump to watch!

Think shes def head down now, as my bump has dropped...in fact it rests on my thighs when I'm sitting down hehe.

Happy mummy here for once yay! Someone PLEASE remind me of the fact that shes been soooooooo active today when I'm complaining/stressing/worrying about lack of movements tomorrow!!

Kyyria how annoying! Could you design and make a jaffa-cake catapult, let them go stale and hard then fire some at her at close range? (hang on, are they a cake, so go hard when stale, or a biscuit, so go soft? Can never remember...). Anyway, on principal, I think you should endeavour to get through labour on nothing but jaffa cakles now. "Gas and air, Kyyria?" "No thanks, just pass me some more jaffa cakes, yum! (Caveat: this is the sort of childish thing I would do, you're probably a lot more sensible...)

Lisbeth, grand advice re sterilising, esp,. the line on the bucket - that sounds like the sort of practicality I would expect from the other Lisbeth, to be honest - are you sure you're really opposites? Wink I bought the Dr Brown bottles and microwave steriliser kit - planning to BF but want to be able to express into bottles for DH to go evening feeds after a few weeks and figured may as well get those bottles straight off instead of getting cheaper ones then possibly deciding I needed them afterwards. So will only be using one bottle per day, max, and on reflection, bucket plus Miltons may work better. Gah, so many options and choices!

Shell, aww at snails meeting friends! That's sweet. Think what we had going on was a snail convention! Remind me how to get the free changing bag from Boots? Already have a changing bag but am a total whore for freebies

I can report that nearly 2 whole (Green & Blacks size) bars of chocolate and 2 slices of bread with butter and lemon curd doesn't bring on the heartburn nearly as much as 15 biscuits Blush. What is WRONG with me? Bean so high on sugar, I swear it was trying to escape through my stomach yesterday evening, lots of very uncomfortable wriggling. Completely serves me right.

Also, the most worrying baby brain moment yet - my brain forgot what a squirrel was. I had this confused moment, looking out of the kitchen window, watching this small grey furry thing on the lawn while my brain mused: "WTF is THAT?. Looks a bit like a cat. Can't be, though - too small and wrong shape. Stumped, what else could it be?". Then clarity returned and brain went "Ah, of course, a squirrel." God. Someone help me, I have still have 5.5 weeks left and I have to maintain a semblance of professionalism at work for 2 of them. I'm doomed...

Hope everyone enjoyed the bank holiday and the resulting 4-day working week. I have to go into school tomorrow for a day, yuk. Sulking at the very thought Angry.

Hi!
Londonlivvy the tonic could Only have been a treat had it been stashed with some gin!!! Not that I've been drinking ANY gin!! Tho I had half glass red wine with the most delicious rare-medium fillet steak of my LIFE at wedding on Saturday. DH was watching the steak unhappily, other guests were eyeing the wine.... I was in bloody HEAVEN!

No matter what I still wake up on back several times a night and in morning. And I still hav no idea of what way round this bubba is now Sad

Not been at work since Friday, feel like a new person... But off I must go now! Hav a nice day all, hope u feel as well and as calm as possible, xx

Kyyria · 28/08/2012 08:01

Morning all

yomping chuckling at your comment about surviving labour just on jaffa cakes....that is precisely the sort ofchildish thing that I would do, although the catapult idea sounds good too Grin

Also laughing at your squirrel incident. Most of my vocabulary has now been replaced with "thingy", "doobry" and hand signals!

Hope everyone has a decent day - only 9 and a quarter hours until hometime!

What's wrong with eating steak? Confused

hufflepuffle · 28/08/2012 08:22

Don't panic Wantanorange!!!!! Tis not the steak, tis the rareness of it!!! Overcooked meat is the advice, just in case of any bugs...... But lots of ladies here hav said bugger to that anyway!!! I love my steak on rare side of medium and well done just makes me remember childhood eating problems of mothers Overcooked EVERYTHING so I've had none!!! Such a treat!!!

YompingJo · 28/08/2012 09:03

Bugger to that! Pregnancy is hard enough without a big long list of things we can't eat. I'm sure everything I eat builds up baby's tolerance to different foods. Will report back on that in approximately 7 months!

OP posts:
Londonmrss · 28/08/2012 12:21

Is this braxton hicks? Sometimes (either after I've been for a wee, or if I've been standing for a while) I get a sort of pressure feeling on the lower half of my bump, under my belly button. It only lasts 20 or 30 seconds. It doesn't really feel like the tightening I've read about, nor does my bump go all hard- it just feels like pressure really- a bit difficult to describe. Definitely not a UTI as everything is fine (if frequent!) in that area. Any thoughts?
Shell, my is exactly the same position wise! Was head down and facing my right side as could always feel her feet kicking my ribs on the right- now it's all over. I think she's facing out front now. The other strange thing is when I'm upright she's definitely head down, but when I'm laying on my side it's anyone's guess as I feel movements right on both sides at the same time. Is it possible she's transverse when I lie down and head down when I'm upright? Midwife said on Fri she was head down but not yet engaged.
Yomping, your squirrel moment made me giggle.

Have added myself to the list, and also CWest!

Hi all, very envious of your 4 day week. I'm back to a 6 day week this week, after a month of no Saturdays.Sad On the plus side, only 5 more Saturdays to do til I stop that part of my job, Grin seems a bit more manageable when I think of it like that.

I'm not leaking either, Huffle and Beccus. Not a drop. Hope it all works when the time comes. I've also had no BH, and I've not experienced baby hiccups yet...I feel like I'm missing out!

Loved your snail convention Yomping, it sounds very "you" to try and count them all. I probably would have started, but given up around 7.

Docs tomorrow so going to ask about my small measurements, and going to try wangle an extra scan as DH is coming with me but it's not meant to be my scan day. Sure it'll be fine if we pay the extra.

Oh, quick stupid question - Am I supposed to bounce on my exercise ball or just sit on it or what?! Been doing a bit of both so far just in case. Also, rocking back and forth feels good on my back.

It's 9pm here, I recently got home from work, have the makings of a tasty, quick-to-prepare and healthy meal in the fridge. So why am I sitting on the sofa eating crisps???

Dont panic, am sure not major but yoga teacher says bouncing ONLY at end if you overdue or in stage 1 labour to help speed things up!! She repeatedly tells us no bouncing, just rotations and sitting and stretching......

Off to eat my lunch in peace here while reading you all, that just caught my attention!!!

hufflepuffle · 28/08/2012 13:33

Londonmrss I'm not sure if that is BH or just pressure? I get that an awful lot, more so lately and this pelvic pain crap is increasing dramatically so I think that is the weight of the baby really? I do get v obvious hard tummy several tiimes a day, sometimes painful, mostly not. But MW at antenatal class said BH are very variable and different and some people feel them, some do not. We all apparently have them as is the uterus gradually strengthening itself but not feeling them or being aware of them is not a problem at all, apparently.

Glad to hear others not leaking...... not that I want to, just good to know! Was reading guide from MW last night on BF, totally grossed out by all these pics of other boobies....big child.......... especially on the page on self expressing......bleurgh. Hopefully my super dooper lecky one will do it. DH was in stitches at me mentioning 'milking myself' here we go again.............

Londonmrss and Shell sounds like shape of my baba too! Was def on right side but now all seems opposite. Which according to that spinning babies site is not just as beneficial but we have time yet. Is also suddenly higher again as struggling to bend again.

Sorry, but 4 day weeks for me now!! Actually bit of a diary muck up, actually 3 days next week..........honestly, if I was an employee I'd be in trouble!! My rotas at the minute are not exactly efficient......... But usually there is only me and regular 1 day every other week cover. Now there are 3 opticians and I am a bit distracted............
Trying to decide whether to add myself in for that 4 th day or just say bugger it and have the day off!!!!!!!!

Wonder how Angelico getting on and settling in?? Hope all ok. x

How are the snails Yomping ?! That is mad. We usually grow lettuce and I am on constant snail and slug alert as have climbing roses and fir trees and they both seems to grow the buggers!!!! But due to imminent move, did not grow any this yr, boo hoo. No comment on what I di to the snails trying to eat my lovely lettuce........ [skeptical]

Ciao for now!
x

(flip, you will all be glad I am usually on phone or ipad and not on a PC, look how much I can blather on.................!)

LoopyLa · 28/08/2012 13:48

Good advice on sterilising and bouncing on birthing balls ladies! I have also been bouncing Shock, didn't occur to me not to do it!

Yomping there was so much rain last night that getting to the car this morning was like doing the hurdles as I had to step over so many giant, disgusting slugs

Does anyone else worry that one day they are going to wake up, get out of bed and just fall over cos their bump has got SO big??!! Hmm

Seeing the MW tomorrow morning & hoping to get an extra slot booked in for antenatal advice as I can't get booked on anywhere...I had this bizarre idea that afterwards I could do a fabulous flow diagram/mind map type thing then for my DH to learn from!! Figured it would give me something to do in the 3 weeks before baby comes along Grin anal retentive
