I've decided to have a Nuchal scan because I'm an older first time Mum and because I want to be prepared properly. Whatever the results I don't think I'll have an instrusive treatment to find out any further information because of the risk of miscarriage.

It's a personal thing really but I like to feel that if that's what I'm going to have then I can get my expectations right.

I can't imagine ever terminating a pregnancy on this result but knowing the increased risk, my husband and I can prepare ourselves emotionally.

There is an advantage as well - we will find out the sex of the baby and see our baby on the monitor at 12 weeks that we wouldn't see until 20 weeks otherwise. I can't wait to see our baby.

dangirl · 03/11/2005 19:22

Dear Noonee,
I believe that you cannot see the sex of the baby at that early a stage.

Flum · 03/11/2005 19:37

OMG I hope not. We have booked a Nuchal Fold Scan. DH was very pro it and the thought of leaving my DD to look after a SN's younger sibling when we died made me want to be able to make the choice if possible.

Don't want to know the sex though. Is that weird?

Diddle · 04/11/2005 08:27

we don't want to know the sex either flum, we know someone who was todl she was having a boy and she decorated and bought loads of blue clothes and she had a girl!! think it will be nice to have a surprise after all that pushing

i'm with noonee, i will have the nuchal fold scan so that if it's a high risk we can prepare ourselves.

can someone tell me if the midwife listens to the heartbeat at the booking-in appointment? DP wants to come with me for that reason, but his sister said the midwife won't do it yet.

justbetweenourselves · 04/11/2005 09:21

They don't listen to the heartbeat till about 16 weeks, as before then it's not that easy to pick up. My booking appointment was all paperwork, height, blood pressure and information. Here, we get the bloods done at 16 wks. Hope your appointment goes well - mine lasted about 45 mins.

I have my scan a week on Monday (a shade under 11 weeks, but have requested a specific Consultant, hence it was then or 15 wks and I couldn't wait that long to see the baby!!!) We are not offered a nuchal fold scan here, it's just a dating one. Dh and I are happy to leave it at that.

Hope you all have a great weekend and are feeling better today!

Morning everybody - loads of posts since I last looked! Hope everybody is feeling well today.

Bugs - How bad was your pre-eclampsia? I had it too, but I'm still contemplating a home birth this time. I thought it was rare to have it a second time with the same father? I'm not going to think about it too much until closer to the date, as I don't want to get my hopes up this time (wanted a HB last time as well). I got PE from about 36 wks, so along way to go yet! Good luck for the scan next week!

LilacBump - hope the ab's are kicking in for your infection now. I got one at the start of my pg with DS, but I didn't go to the doc's for a few days as everyone kept telling me that you feel achey and sore at the start of pg. I didn't realise it wasn't meant to be that bad. Feel for you because it's awful.

My MW did listen to the hb at my last booking-in appt (which was about 11/12 weeks). She did warn me that she might not be able to find it though, and not to worry if she couldn't. That would have been horrible, as I didn't get a scan until 20wks. She found it fine though, and it was lovely to hear. How many wks will you be at the appt?

Dana - hope you are feeling a bit better now after the tummy bug? Good luck for your scan next week.

Diddle - my friend did exactly the same thing. Hope her daughter likes her blue sea theme room! It must be a real shock to expect one sex and get the other!

Feeling sicker by the day here! Was gagging making ds's banana and porridge this morning. He might have to start liking kiwi and porridge instead! Less than a week until my booking in now, but don't think the MW will listen to the hb as I'll only be 8ish wks. Fingers crossed I'll find out about the 12w scan then though.

Sorry for the mega long post!

Laura032004 · 04/11/2005 09:30

X-posted with you justbetweenourselves. Good luck for your scan!

Diddle · 04/11/2005 10:25

lilacbump - my booking in was all paperwork, urine tests, height and weight, she didn;t even feel my tummy, not much to feel then anyway. They definitly don't check the heartbeat here that early on, I will have bloods done at 12 wks, and my first NHS scan is at 11wks, in 2 wks time.
Not even worth your DH having the day off work lilacbump, i'd save the day for later on, unless you want him there with you of course.

9 wks today have never been 9 wks pregnant before, last baby miscarried at 8wks6 days, so i'm enjoyign today. morning sickness is not too bad this morning, have a headache as always, but sick feeling is keeping a low profile for now. I've decided that i'm gonna enjoy thsi pregnancy and make th emost of it, rather than wishing it away, because i felt so yuk. we'll see how long my positiveness lasts.

LilacBump · 04/11/2005 11:46

oh thank you for the info, girls. i remember last time the midwife definitely did listen to it. she felt my tummy, did bloods, did all the paperwork etc. i was told the appointment on monday (i'll be 10 weeks on tuesday) will be 45 minutes long. DP says he'll come anyway, heartbeat or not. he works nights, so he doesn't have to take a day off.

the infection seems to be clearing up now. the pain is gone and i feel much better. i'm finally catching up with housework now.

diddle, congratulations on making it past the 9 weeks mark! i celebrate each day that goes past at the moment.

all good luck with the scans and booking-in appointments! it's all getting exciting now. i can't wait to see some scan pictures!

Lottielou · 04/11/2005 15:41

Hey Ladies!
Sorry haven't been on for a while i've been having a bit of a nightmare and been keeping my distance from MN.
But i'm back now and feeling the need to get to know you all and see what i've been missing out on the past couple of weeks.
Well to give you an update with me, i've had very bad pains in my right side for a few weeks now, went and had a scan to rule out Ectopic, that is ruled out now! But they found a cluster of cysts on my left ovary which is causing my womb to deviate to the right apparently causing pressure on my right side - hence the pain. They said that as my baby grows then all should right itself as the baby take priority in my body. roll on for when that happens as the pain is driving me nuts.
then to top that when we did have the scan there wasn't any sign of the heart beat, i was thinking all sorts, so they booked me in for a scan 10 days later as i may not of been as far as i thought as my periods were so irregular.
Phew deep breath...
The saturday before i was due for my scan i had a bleed so went to the hopspital to see if they could scan me there and then but as it was on the weekend they couldn't so i had to keep it for the Weds. Those few days were awful, i didn't know if there was a baby growing inside me of just the gestation sack, anyway Thank god there it was, the little tiny heart beat! they found that i have a small heamatoma (sp, lol) in my womb which could of caused the bleed i had, it's no where near the baby so nothing to worry about and should just absorb back into me.
So with that reassurance things were going ok, still having the pin but then a couple of days afo i started getting very bad pains in my back and all across my tummy with deep sharp stabbing pains. So went to the docs today and i have been graqced with a nasty urine infection. I'm taking antibiotics and signed off work for another week! Lucky me hey! NOT, i wish i could just start enjoying this pregnancy!

So... thats me! Sorry for the essay girls, that actually feels better to of got that off my chest! Phew!!!

Hope your all 0k!

P.s sorry for all the typos! Spelling is poo! lol

7 weeks 3 days

Diddle · 04/11/2005 17:38

welcome back lottie, i know you;ve had a hell of a month so far, fingers crossed it all gets better soon and you can enjoy this pregnancy.

Lottielou · 04/11/2005 17:39

I know somebody was thinking of getting one, so this might be of interest.

Laura032004 · 05/11/2005 18:30

Bugs - can you not ring the emergency doc number and explain what has happened. My doc did a similar thing - prescribed something not to be used whilst bf, and the emergency doc issued a scrip without seeing me. DH just picked it up from hosp (luckily 1 mile away then!) and got it dispensed for me.

Hope you get it sorted

Bugs · 05/11/2005 18:50

hiya
Thing is emergancy dr covers most of county so won't have my notes so won't know whats gone off Hubby has picked up perscribtion and had it filled but the bottle has a big warning not to be taken by pregnant woman

Diddle · 07/11/2005 07:25

morning ladies how are you all doing? can't believe another week has passed. feeling pretty knackered today, didn't have too energetic a weekend, just seem to be low on energy.

Daisybump · 07/11/2005 15:16

Hi, i'm new to mumsnet and message boards...and i'm due on 29 June. Been off work with nausea, tiredness and the most awful depression, very muck like the pnd i had after birth of ds 3 and half yrs ago. Caring and understanding dp helping me through it, but some days are really tough. trying some homeopathic remedies which seem to be helping. doc assures me it will get better after first trimester has passed...can't wait.
Anyway congrats to everyone out there and hope you're all starting to bloom

LilacBump · 07/11/2005 18:08

congratulations and welcome daisybump!

i had my booking appointment today. the midwife did all the bloods (i nearly passes out as usual). she tested my water sample and it still had protein in it, so it looks like my infection hasn't cleared up with the anti-biotics. i will see a consultant at the hospital in two weeks (because of my kidney problems) and will have my first scan too then. she didn't specify what the scan was though. it wasn't the regular midwife and she was making quite a mess of it all. and i didn't hear the heartbeat and she did have a feel, but there was nothing out of the pelvis yet, as expected.
