He died peacefully with my mum beside him. He's only 64, but has been very ill with cancer for a long time, and the last few months in particular have been very tough.

Roisin, I'm glad his final moments were peaceful - but I'm very sorry for the loss all of you will feel & that your Dad had to endure a long illness. My thoughts are with you & your mum.

DumbledoresGirl · 19/09/2006 09:33

I am so sorry to read this Roisin. I am not really on Mumsnet at the moment as my mother had a major stroke 2 weeks ago and I am in so much pain because of it, I don't want to sit about on the computer, but when I saw your post, I thought this could so easily be me posting.

I grieve for you. It is so hard to see your parents ill and I have believed my mother dead so many times this last 2 weeks that I know the anguish you feel right now.

What a wonderful man your father was. How lucky you were to have him.

FoghornLeghorn · 19/09/2006 09:33

Roisin, so sorry for the loss of your dad

My FIL passed away 5 years ago to cancer, he was 43. It certainly doesn't make it any easier knowing what it inevitable at some point.
Thinking of you and yours x

Clary · 19/09/2006 09:38

Oh roisin. Only just seen this. I am so so sorry.

I had no idea you were going through this but it's very very hard isn't it to watch someone you love suffering so much. And even though you know it's coming, it's still a shock and hard to deal with.
I know it sounds so corny but having seen it myself, you know he is at peace and in no pain now.
How lovely that you and the boys have such nice memories of the recent years.
Cxx

I'm so very sorry roisin - and I'm thinking of you and your mum DG.

fairyjay · 19/09/2006 09:44

One more person thinking of you here, and hoping that your pain will be diluted by some wonderful memories.

Keep talking about your Dad to your children. Three years after my Dad's death, ds will still say to me 'what would Grandad have thought?'.

ledodgyrobespierre · 19/09/2006 09:51

I'm so sorry to hear this Roisin. I have lost both parents and the advice on here is brilliant keep him alive in your memory and he will live on. Thinking of you. xxx

SaintGeorge · 19/09/2006 11:00

Much love roisin xx

My boys have lost both of their Grandads, but DS1 keeps them alive for DS2 by telling him stuff that he is too young to remember. Whenever I hear them talking it breaks my heart, yet it makes me so proud at the same time.

throckenholt · 19/09/2006 11:04

what an awful thing for you all to go through.

My next door neighbour died recently in a similar way, and it was a relief when his suffering was over.

Take one day at a time, and work on remembering him as he was, and not as the illness made him in the last few months.

poppiesinaline · 19/09/2006 11:07

So sorry roisin. What fab memories though. Keep talking about them to engrave them on your los minds.

I have very special memories of my grandad that will be with me forever.
