At 11.25 last night, our beautiful, 9-year-old daughter died of complications from treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia, she went into respiratory failure after contracting human metapneumo virus following conditioning chemotherapy for stem cell transplant.

For many days, she lingered on a ventilator. But last night, she developed a pneumothorax and rapidly deteriorated.

She died within seconds of the ventilator being taken off.

I can't believe she's gone, or how broken her long body looked.

Despite not believing in God in any conventional way, I have, since my teens, been drawn to the little side chapel of my local cathedral when I want to think.

So I sat a while and thought of you all and then I lit my usual candle for DMIL and an extra one and left a note.

Aillidh,
I so wish this was a candle of hope and not remembrance.

If you have faith please pray for all who loved this little girl.

BustersOfDoom · 10/07/2012 23:30

My friend in the USA lost one of her friends suddenly yesterday. She was a member of the church prayer team who were praying for Aillidh. She was a lovely lady and I would like to think she is up there with Aillidh and her friend Jack as they settle in to heaven and help each other xx

dontcallmehon · 10/07/2012 23:31

So sorry expat. Still thinking of you and praying for you. You have been in my thoughts all day. Much love.

toomuch2young · 10/07/2012 23:33

No words can take any of the pain away but thoughts and prayers are with you and your beautiful brave little girl. I do not know you expat but have followed your daughters battle with thoughts and prayers.
No one should ever go through what you are going through and it wrenches at the hearts of us all. God bless you all.

dizzydixies · 10/07/2012 23:37

Expat I have no words, none for this awful thing that happened to you all. I'm only a short drive away if you need me for anything at all. Anything.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Christina Georgina Rossetti

God bless you Aillidh

In the Next Room

Death is nothing at all:
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you;
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone:
Wear no forced air or solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the
little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
Just around the corner. All is well.
-Canon Henry Scott Holland
