Just come back from a weekend in Poland (at the wedding of a close friend) - everyone took ds's thumb out of his mouth! At which he grumped and turned his head to use the other thumb. I was told that he'd get long thin fingers if he kept sucking it. Nearly all their babies use dummies tho.
