What do you think of Jugurtha?

What do you think of Jugurtha as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

This isn't really what do you think, I just wanted to say how annoyed I am at someone putting comments on the name Jugurtha like they have. I can't believe someone put nick name as 'piss face'. Does anyone know how I can report this to MNHQ so they can remove this remark which I think is completely unacceptable!

PMSL. (But wasn't me)

ArseHolio · 20/05/2010 18:58

It is one of the ugliest names I have ever heard but doesn't make me think 'piss face'

well, it didn't before you mentioned it.

Lauriefairycake · 20/05/2010 18:59

It's truly the worst name I've ever heard.

It's basically large-breasted bertha for a boy.

Just cos you find it unacceptable doesn't mean it should be censored so I think you should re-think your position. Being offended is hardly the worst thing in the world.

Being called Jugurtha may be though.

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 18:59

There are alot of people called Jugurtha, I'm sure they wouldn't find it funny. What happens if someone in another country decided it was fine to write that about the name Jack? I find it very culturally disrespectful.

( just read the link )

Lauriefairycake · 20/05/2010 19:03

I don't care if they write anything about the name 'Jack' - I don't care if it means GIANT COCK FEATURES in Belgium.

It would be funny if I were Belgian.

Some things are funny in other languages. The town Wan King is particularly funny.

Unclench.

Thediaryofanobody · 20/05/2010 19:04

Gosh those remarks on the link are pathetic and very insulting I too agree that they should be removed.

AndieWalsh · 20/05/2010 19:04

pmsl@Laurie

'large breasted bertha for a boy'

I am actually crying with laughter

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 19:07

But it doesn't mean 'piss face' in English, it has no meaning, it is just someone being incredibly insulting and beyond childish.

Unfortunate Jugurthas: Anyone called Jugurtha

sorry, but I really can't argue with that.

skidoodly · 20/05/2010 19:20

someone being incredibly amusing more like

Unfortunate Jugurthas: Anyone called Jugurtha - genius

Lauriefairycake · 20/05/2010 19:21

I thought the mumsnet name finder occasionally put a random selection of letters together or names from round the world.

I am sure in at least one culture even though it won't be spelled like it there will be a kid who's name pronounces like piss face.

Or 'fuck face' or 'fanjo'. There just will be. And it will still be funny.

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 19:24

Laurie - But Jugurtha is not that name. It is not pronounced like that, nor is it spelt like that.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 19:25

No, asserting that it means P F is someone's idea of humour. A nickname doesn't necessarily have to be related to a name's meaning.

Yes, it's culturally disrespectful to make fun of a name you think has an unfortunate combination of sounds based on your own linguistic and cultural experiences and expectations, but that's life, and I'd be willing to bet there's no place in the world where this doesn't happen.

And without the fact of people having opinions on names, some positive, some negative, there would be no Baby Names Topic.

Are you a native English speaker?

WombFrootShoot · 20/05/2010 19:28

Oh man, I freaking love MN sometimes.

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 19:29

mathanxiety - yes I am a native English speaker, still don't find it funny.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 20/05/2010 19:31

Jugurtha

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 19:35

But a nickname could be anything. There are people whose nicknames are Pixie or Bunty and their original names are Mary and Alice.

I know someone who is over 6 foot tall who has always been called Lefty, because Shorty would be too obvious... Nicknames are complicated.

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 19:35

Dorothea - exactly, its a well known and fairly well used Berber name.

I am asking MN just to remove it to stop people vandalising it as it were.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 19:38

I don't like it, the posting has racist undertones...

DorotheaPlenticlew · 20/05/2010 19:39

People are very ignorant.

blijemuts · 20/05/2010 19:43

I actually know a living person in Holland called Willy de Kok!! Pretty common name over there but would love to see if customs in England could keep a straight face when confronted with Willy's passport ....
Jughurta is just cruel though me thinks

Bumbleconfusus · 20/05/2010 19:45

bli - its a traditional berber name, not 'cruel' as you put it. Plus you didn't even take the time to spell it correctly.

OP posts:
nighbynight · 20/05/2010 19:46

at those ignorant, racist comments.
I will add my voice to yours to ask MN to remove them.

Jugurthen/Jugurtha was a Berber leader who fought against the romans.

It's a very popular name in N Africa even today, as is Massinissa (the father of Jugurtha)

Incidentally, it's pronounced You-gur-ta.

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 19:48

By the way, some English names sound pretty stupid in N Africa.

"nick" means fuck, for example.
