What do you think of Jugurtha?

What do you think of Jugurtha as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

This isn't really what do you think, I just wanted to say how annoyed I am at someone putting comments on the name Jugurtha like they have. I can't believe someone put nick name as 'piss face'. Does anyone know how I can report this to MNHQ so they can remove this remark which I think is completely unacceptable!

Really sorry, did't mean to offend! Jugurtha would probably just raise a few eyebrows here is what I wanted to say. Tried to point out with my example that certain names are absolutely normal/well used in one country/culture but might be awkward for a person to have in this country.

What's a suitable nn for someone called

Eggbert?
AElfgifu?
Aldfrith?
Ecgfrith?
Eadwig?
Ethelfrith?
Eorcenwald?
Grimbald?
C nut?

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 19:51

It's the vile comments about the nickname that should be removed.
Insults about a traditional name - how funny, I don't think

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 19:54

Not all names are created equal.

All the names I mention are Saxon leaders who fought against each other, and possibly against the Normans. It's not racist, imo, to suggest they have a certain ridiculous quality to them, nor would it be racist for someone who is not English to find them funny.

Haliborange · 20/05/2010 19:56

How are those comments racist?
They aren't there because the name is foreign. They are there because it is perhaps not the nicest name in the world, regardless of its origin or history.

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 19:57

To take the piss out of something you don't know about or understand is the very basis of racism, mathanxiety. Labelling someone pissface does strike me as witty.

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 19:58

not

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 19:59

They are racist, because this is not a universal name. It's a name that belongs to, and is culturally very important to, a particular single ethnic group, the Berbers.

Jugurtha is not just any Berber name, it's a very significant one.

I liked the name Sylvie but someone said Pissy Pants, I didn't find it offensive (did make me waste my brew as it spat across the floor though).
Its not racist its someones opinion.

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 20:21

Making fun of something you know nothing about is ignorant, not racist. To be racist or xenophobic, you have to actually know that a name is important to a certain group and mock it accordingly. I don't condone calling anyone piss face or anything else insulting and calling it humour, and I haven't done so on this thread.

There are lots of names that are important to lots of people worldwide that have sound combinations that don't come across as particularly elegant or they don't flow well or they mean something completely different in another language. The Russian name Igor, or the Irish name Conchubar (which is translated to Conor, pronounced Cru-hore or Cru-hoor) spring to mind; they're perfectly fine in Russia or Ireland but to an English ear they're not necessarily great. And the same goes for Jugurtha, imo.

You can have an objection to Conchubar based on its sound and not be anti-Irish or a hater of all things Hibernian or a person with no respect for Irish history or legend. You might just think that saddling a boy with a name that incorporates the sound 'whore' is off-putting.

chesgirlNOTgriffins · 20/05/2010 20:29

Finally! A name Mumsnetters hate more than Jaidon

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 20:31

I think if I started taking the piss out of Conchubar or Moshe, or another "foreign" sounding name, there'd be load of angry people protesting about it.

The nasty comments do not just say "this name is inappropriate in the UK", they specifically say "ANYONE called Jugurtha"
They are rubbishing the name in all contexts, not just the context of Britain. That is racist.

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 20:32

Sorry mathsanxiety racist behaviour stems from just that, racism is about ignorance. You will never convince me that calling someone pissface because of a traditional African name is based on nothing but prejudice.

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 20:41

So, chancing my arm here, but how many people here would call a child Jugurtha if they had a chance to?

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 20:43

lol mathanxiety, your point?

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 20:48

Jugurtha was one of the names we considered. In the end, we went for regional names. Ex h didnt want to use Massinissa, Jugurtha or Afric (my personal favourite), because he said that those men were such great figures in Berber history, that he shied away from naming a son after them.

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 20:49

(obviously others do not have the same reservataions, because I know quite a few little Jugurthas and Massinissas)

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 20:50

I think my point was to ask whether anyone actually liked the name. Which is not exactly the point of the thread, I know.

I don't think anyone hearing the name Jugurtha in RL would call the bearer pissface because it's a traditional Berber name. I don't know what exactly goes on in the mind of someone who would use a term like that for someone else, but if someone was racist they would probably use the term pissface no matter what name the target of their abuse bore. There are probably plenty of other African names on Babynamefinder that have not been vandalised.

alfiemama · 20/05/2010 20:51

I think as well, isn't the point that someone put daft comments on a resource that probably cost a lot of time and effort, what is disrespectful. Had someone asked for peoples opinions on the name, then sorry fair game (obviously within reason and boundaries).

nighbynight · 20/05/2010 20:55

mathanxiety
but not Berber ones...
why are you so keen to defend such nastiness anyway?

scurryfunge · 20/05/2010 20:56

I think liking/not liking the name is a bit of a side issue.

I couldn't understand why anyone would choose to write the pissface comment on the site. They are clearly not thinking and that is the point I was making about racist behaviour. You are right in that they probably show themselves up in everyday language and behaviour as abusive. I feel we shouldn't condone and reinforce such behaviour by saying "yeah but it is a silly name" iyswim?

mathanxiety · 20/05/2010 21:04

I like Massinissa much better than Jugurtha.

Afric I would consider too close to the Irish girl's name Aifric.

I know a lot of Conchubars, but they have name-related problems in the UK (for reasons of both pronunciation and sound).

SpeedyGonzalez · 20/05/2010 21:16

Though I think the 'piss face' comment was rather base, I am really struggling to see how on earth it could be construed as racist. If Jugurtha were a European name the poster would still have written that comment; would that make it racist? How bizarre.

On a separate note, I once knew a French girl named (wait for it...wait for it...)

It'll be well worth the wait...

Fanny Ear.

I kid you not.

And another one whose nickname in her country was 'Poo'. I had to take her aside in class and explain why it was probably a good idea for her to stop asking her classmates to use her nickname, now that she was living in England. I said: 'You know when you go to the toilet, and you do something brown...'. She got the picture.

Hello.

It appears one of our least-loved troll friends has been getting "creative" with the Baby Name Finder.

We are going through and deleting his additions manually but it may take us a while.

Sorry for any offence that has been caused.
