Ellis - which gender?

I love the name Ellis for a boy.

My mum, who is a primary school teacher, says that it is a girls name and a boy called Ellis will be teased.

I know that Ellie is very popular for girls but is Ellis?

Thanks!

I only know one and he's a boy

iklboo · 09/04/2014 18:34

Boy.

cremolafoam · 09/04/2014 18:35

The one I know is a lady in her 50s

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/04/2014 17:25

It's a Welsh boys name as Essie said.

I do know of a girl Ellis, she'd be around 20 now. Everyone was apparently Hmm at the time (I don't remember I was 4ish at the time) and there was much muttering that it was "like calling a girl Stephen".

SirChenjin · 13/04/2014 17:27

It's a girls name here - I know of 2

NadiaWadia · 13/04/2014 17:45

My great uncle was called Ellis, so it will always be a boys' name to me. Don't really see the need to use it for girls, goodness knows there are enough girls' names starting with 'Ell' like Eleanor, Ella etc. Or there's Alice, which it may get mixed up for if using for a girl.

MrGeresHamster · 13/04/2014 18:02

Definitely a boys name! I know of several, they are all boys. I love it.

Moonshine1 · 15/04/2014 12:34

Boy.

Ekatea · 19/04/2014 00:44

My little girl is called Ellis, & I think it is a lovely classy name for a girl. I would say it was more of a girls name.

FatFrumpyFilly · 19/04/2014 01:00

I always thought of it as a boys name but it really suits DD's female friend.

Ludways · 19/04/2014 01:11

40 year old bloke next door is Ellis. Never heard of a girl one.

Breezy1985 · 19/04/2014 01:15

Boy.

Ellis would be the name if I ever have another DS. Not likely but I love the name Smile

privitandpetunias · 19/04/2014 08:18

A friend has a nephew called Ellis, he is about 4 I think.

mummy2pickle · 19/04/2014 18:25

I absolutely love the name Ellis for a boy but couldn't have it as it is my step daughters middle name! so it suits both sexes but I prefer it as a boys name

spanda · 19/04/2014 22:05

I didn't know it was a girls name! Always boys i have met been Ellis
But then my last name is Ellis!

jellybeans · 19/04/2014 22:22

I know a boy one but i would worry about Elli for short.

AreWeThereYeti · 19/04/2014 22:29

Either is ok but it Is more of a boys name to my ears.
I know a little Ellis. I think its a cool name. Smile

LoveVintage · 19/04/2014 22:37

DS2 is Ellis. The only time before that we had heard the name was an American man whom DH had worked with many years ago. Not long after ours was born we heard of a girl locally called Ellis who is about 4 years older than him. I was gutted as I had wanted to pick a relatively unusual name. I met the mum not long after who said that she knew it was a boys name but loved it enough to use it for a girl. I have since met a very young boy Ellis.

SpearmintLino · 19/04/2014 22:37

Only ever known of one Ellis; he was a male character in Brookside Smile

Wordsaremything · 20/04/2014 21:33

Can be either. Emily's nom de plume was Ellis and her sisters were Currer and Acton.

AuntieStella · 20/04/2014 21:41

The Brontes deliberately chose male names for their noms de plume.

Redmasseyinmydrive · 20/04/2014 21:45

I'm welsh and have never heard of a girl being called Elis. I know lots of Boy who are called Elis... 1 L though not 2.

Monkeymonstermum · 20/04/2014 22:17

I would assume as it's a name that's derived from a surname that it's a boy or if it were a girl I would presume American.

squoosh · 20/04/2014 22:45

The only Ellis I know is a girl of about 5 but I still think of it as a boy's name.

NCFTTB · 20/04/2014 22:48

Boy
