Ellis - which gender?

I love the name Ellis for a boy.

My mum, who is a primary school teacher, says that it is a girls name and a boy called Ellis will be teased.

I know that Ellie is very popular for girls but is Ellis?

Thanks!

My nephew is Ellis. He is named after William Webb Ellis.

Boy. Had never heard of any female Ellises till I read this thread.

Loobyfly · 21/03/2010 20:29

My daughter's best friend is a girl called Ellis

EightiesChick · 21/03/2010 20:30

Ah, have just been reminded of Ellis as Emily Bronte's pen name, reading above - but as Clary says, they deliberaely chose ambiguous names and I'm sure I read somewhere that they aimed for ambiguous but male-leaning sounding names if that makes sense.

CheekyGirl · 21/03/2010 20:50

My dd's best friend (girl) is called Ellis. Before that, I'd only ever heard it as a boy's name.

PanicMode · 21/03/2010 21:14

My DD came home with an invitation to a party at Ellis' house - I immediately assumed it was a boy, but she's a girl.

IvanaPavlov · 21/03/2010 21:19

My DS2 is called Ellis. Here in Wales, it is mostly used as a boy's name. Saying that, I teach a girl in my class called Ellis and there was a woman on Lorraine's show called Ellis the other day.

EssieAmma · 21/03/2010 22:41

It's a Welsh name, and it's masculine. (Authentic Welsh spelling is Elis, with the surname form of it being made to look more English in Tudor times with the 2 l's. Sorry about the nerdiness but this is what I do...) It's not at all feminine if you speak Welsh - it's got a good solid masculine feel to it IYKWIM.

Mind you, other Welsh names have been switched, eg Meredith for a girl but don't get me started on that. Or Dylan for a girl . Shocking! So masculine!

EvilTwins · 21/03/2010 23:09

Edith Pargeter (Ellis Peters) chose Ellis because it was her brother's name. So def boy.

PavlovtheCat · 22/03/2010 07:44

Ellis is a boys name!

skinsl · 22/03/2010 07:58

It's a boys name. It's been in our family for generations. It's lovely.

overmydeadbody · 22/03/2010 07:59

It'a boy's name.

I don't like it.

DuelingFanjo · 22/03/2010 08:01

deffo a boy. is popular in Wales.

albinosquirrel · 22/03/2010 08:17

I know two adult ellis's - one male one female- woman is AMerican though- don't know if nationaloty makes a difference

Mamafey · 22/03/2010 08:45

I think Ellis sounds like a boy's name but whatever feels right for your baby feels right. I am pregnant with my second boy and we like name Indigo and everyone we tell snears and says its not a name or better for a girl - the trick is not to tell people - then they can't say anything once you've named your bundle of joy.

diddl · 22/03/2010 08:57

I think Ellis is female in US?
I think it sounds more male than female tbh.

Mamafey-love Indigo-again I think female in US?
But so close to Inigo I think sounds male.

We didn´t tell anyone the names we were thinking of.
Good job-mum hated what we called our son-until others commented "how lovely & unusual"
She would have spent the pregnancy trying to dissuade me!

Flowerface · 22/03/2010 10:06

In Black Book (WWII film set in Holland), the Ellis is a girl...

nappyaddict · 22/03/2010 10:45

Boy

Pasiphae · 22/03/2010 11:34

Ellis is for boys. Even if the sounds are quite soft and feminine.

I would use Elise for a girl.

dizzydixies · 22/03/2010 11:48

I've known 2 female Ellis' and one male Ellis and it suited them all

I also know a female Dylan and she is gorgeous, pretty and feminine - people make a name their own regardless of gender

Rockbird · 22/03/2010 11:57

I know one and it's a boy.

annasophia · 22/03/2010 12:01

In German Ellis is definately a girls' name.

There is a famous German childrens' author and she her name is Ellis Kaut.

RooTwo · 22/03/2010 12:14

It definitely sounds like a boys' name to me - there's a little boy Ellis in my daughter's nursery class.

CinderellaRach · 22/03/2010 12:26

My ds1 is Ellis.Doesn't sound right being a girls name to me.

IwantamotorbikeNOW · 22/03/2010 12:49

My DS1 is an Ellis and it definatly suits him. I only know of one other and that is also a boy although a freind of a freind has a DD called Ellis.

If I remember correctly when we were looking at boys name Ellis was a derivative of Elijah.
