Ellis - which gender?

I love the name Ellis for a boy.

My mum, who is a primary school teacher, says that it is a girls name and a boy called Ellis will be teased.

I know that Ellie is very popular for girls but is Ellis?

Thanks!

Hi - my youngest's middle name is Ellice, which is a family surname; we love it.

NormaSknockers · 23/03/2010 09:40

I've always thought of it as a boys name. I do know someone with a DD called Ellis & it just never sounds right to me

Dominique123456 · 23/03/2010 10:25

I know a boy called Ellis - I think it's nice

dimell · 23/03/2010 10:52

The first thing I think of is Ellis Island in the USA. Isn't it where immigrants were processed for entry into the US?

CJJ005 · 23/03/2010 11:35

I have only ever heared of Ellis for a boy

Patsy99 · 23/03/2010 12:44

My ds is called Ellis, it was his Scottish grandfather's christian name. He was a burly captain in the navy and maybe because of that association it doesn't seem feminine to me at all! But I bumped into a girl called Ellis in the playground at the weekend and it seemed nice on her. Re the surname thing, lots of Scottish and Welsh first names were derived from surnames, I find it really irritating when MNers dismiss perfectly established names as surnames.

LC200 · 23/03/2010 13:07

Ellis is primarily a boy's name imo.

nomorewine · 23/03/2010 13:11

I have only known of a boy called Ellis

DoingOK · 23/03/2010 13:15

i knew a man called ellis, he must be 70 at least now. I like it as a boys name but DH not keen.

franch · 23/03/2010 13:38

I thought it was a boy's name

Ellislouise · 08/04/2014 20:50

MY NAME IS ELLIS. I'M A GIRL.

heymatilda · 09/04/2014 06:53

Ive never heard it for a boy. Have taught 2 (teenage) girls called Ellis. I love it for both but would think it was quite a girly boys name.

Incidentally, I've taught some pupils with very far out names (Happy, Swastika, Humbert, Ferrari, etc) and have never known children to be bullied because of their names (just teachers to snigger slightly at first!) really think it's a myth about children bullying because of names particularly in multicultural areas.

My daughter is called Ellis. She was named after Ellis Ward off uk tv. She is now 22 and you hear a lot more girls being called Ellis now days. I know at least 4 yet I don't know any boys. my son even went out with an Ellis (girl) if you like the name use it for girl or boy what does it matter.

TheKangaroo · 09/04/2014 09:17

I think it's a boy in my mind, althoigh I only know a girl called Ellis. Mind you, I know girls called Jaiden and Quinn, so I don't know how much it matters as those two are both definitely boy names in my mind too.

meditrina · 09/04/2014 09:33

Boy's name.

(Or a surname).

whiteblossom · 09/04/2014 10:36

Ellis is my grandfathers name but its also my middle name, but its the name my dh uses for me. (dh thinks my Christian name is too posh!)

I'd say its a boys names but who cares! Smile

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 09/04/2014 11:48

If you actually look at the statistics Ellis is much more commonly used for boys. The Ellis I know has Welsh parents and is a boy.

StackALee · 09/04/2014 11:51

Ellis is a boy's name.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 09/04/2014 11:55

Ellis was given to 627 boys and 25 girls in 2012 in England and Wales, so 25 times more boys than girls. HTH.

cheekyfunkymonkey · 09/04/2014 14:16

Boy. Never heard it used as a girls name.

cloggal · 09/04/2014 16:19

Only ever heard it used for girls, but can see how it works for both.

iseenodust · 09/04/2014 16:26

Boys name. There is one in DS's class and I've never heard it turned into anything funny/nicknamey.

Groovee · 09/04/2014 16:40

I've got friends with both genders called Ellis.

pilates · 09/04/2014 16:48

ToffeeJungle · 09/04/2014 18:10

I quite like it!
