My friend is 31 weeeks with dd2 & has picked a name a lovely name but i said maybe she should re think the spelling as she might be forever telling people how to pronounce it. The name is Heaven spelt backwards Nevaeh it is to me looking at it it looks like Nevah but it is actually pronounced NEV A AH Would you look at the spelling & no how to pronounce it?

i have no idea ...

GoddessInTheKitchen · 07/03/2010 17:19

i do because i know about three kids named this! but how else would you spell it? half of the point is that it is 'heaven spelled backwards' in which case you actually need to do this!

tummytickler · 07/03/2010 17:20

nev-eye-ah.
We had one at work and this is how her parents pronounced it.
I really dislike the name though, and I think people would have trouble with it.

5DollarShake · 07/03/2010 17:25

Awful name. Way too gimmick-y.

I would definitely mispronounce it, but as Goddess says, you can't spell it another way, since the whole point is that it's heaven spelled backwards!

See, gimmicky-y...

God, another one. Poor kid.

I guess theoretically it'd be pn'd "Never".

Perhaps you could try and persuade your friend not to use it. It's awful.

littlemissm · 07/03/2010 17:28

Yes i think she might have probs thats why i said maybe to use another spelling i know what its like to have a name spelt differently to how it is pronounced so thats why i spell my name how it is said. Heaven pronounced backwards is Nevah maybe with the A sound make it AY so it could be spelt NEVAYAH that way it sounds the way it is spelt?

Wouldn't know where to start and would mak vague mumbling attempts - sorry thats always the problem with "unique" names - people can't spell or pronounce them and then you find they're not that unique after all

rubyslippers · 07/03/2010 17:33

keleece?

FairyTrucker · 07/03/2010 17:34

I knew one and it was pronounced NevAYuh.

I don't like it because I feel the idea of putting a word backwards is a bit creepy. What about Niamh Livia or Noelle Eve which have some of the same sounds.

said · 07/03/2010 17:35

Is that for Eceelek?

5DollarShake · 07/03/2010 17:36
Grin
Bucharest · 07/03/2010 17:37

Have you and your friend been at the scrabble bag OP?

PortBlacksand · 07/03/2010 17:37

Anyone else try to work out what Keleece was backwards?

PortBlacksand · 07/03/2010 17:38

Doh!

How about Gnilrad, Lrig or Knip?

grumpypants · 07/03/2010 17:39

does she mean Kelis? As in milkshake?

5DollarShake · 07/03/2010 17:39

The child's clearly damned to life with an awful name - might as well go with the one that sounds like a supermarket-brand face cream.

notsoteenagemum · 07/03/2010 17:41

I suppose I would say it Nevah, but I'd rather not say it at all sorry, and as others have said you can't change the spelling, or it would be Hayaven backwards which makes no sense.
How do you say Keleece? Key-leese.
I think you friend has bad taste in names sorry.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 07/03/2010 17:42

i actually think nevaeh's quite a nice name really, if i was to use it though, i would forget about spelling it 'backwards' and and just spell how it sounds tbh

CarGirl · 07/03/2010 17:43

I think I actually would prefer a child named "heaven" tbh

grumpypants · 07/03/2010 17:46

why not just call her Heaven? Or am I pissing the profound point to the backwards spelling?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/03/2010 17:48

Nevaeh - such a pants name IMHO.

Have come across 3 so far and the [arents proudly announce 'It's heaven spelt backwards!'....

Genius.

grumpypants · 07/03/2010 17:50

oops - missing. That will teach mt to type and cook at the same time.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 07/03/2010 17:52
