My friend is 31 weeeks with dd2 & has picked a name a lovely name but i said maybe she should re think the spelling as she might be forever telling people how to pronounce it. The name is Heaven spelt backwards Nevaeh it is to me looking at it it looks like Nevah but it is actually pronounced NEV A AH Would you look at the spelling & no how to pronounce it?

It isn't a name. To me, that's the main point.

lilac21 · 07/03/2010 22:22

I know one of these, born last November. It is pronounced ne-vay in her case, but I don't honestly believe there is a 'right' way to say something so ludicrous!

Wordsmith · 07/03/2010 22:30

There are quite a few girls and biys at my DSs' school with Irish names spelled wrongly. Not that we live anywhere near Ireland or the children in question have any Irish blood in them. But why can't you just spell your kids' names Niamh, Niall or Siobhan if that's their name, fgs?

PoppityMoppityandCottontail · 07/03/2010 22:31

Is this he new thing then?

Have they run outof name to put the rong letterz in or hyphenate?

Will it reach it's natural conclusion of Nydak-Eelyaj before too long?

I'm off to Netmums for advice...

PoppityMoppityandCottontail · 07/03/2010 22:32

darn keyboard

TreeTrunkThighs · 07/03/2010 22:35

Neh-vay-a

I know one but having never seen it written down hadn't made the heaven connection.

hester · 07/03/2010 23:00

tyv - you didn't get nearly enough applause for your ditty

CarmenSanDiego · 07/03/2010 23:09

I'd just go with Heaven, personally. Why the backwards gimmick?

mollymawk · 07/03/2010 23:16

love your poem, tyv

generally though - wouldn't heaven backwards be a bad thing to think of? why not just Heaven?

i'd say Nev-ay

CheerfulYank · 08/03/2010 00:17

We have quite a few of these in the States and they're all pronounced "Nuh-VAY-uh".

theyoungvisiter · 08/03/2010 08:28

(sorry OP, not very helpful to your actual question I realise. In answer to your actual question, I would probably pronounce Nevaeh, "Oh hello Mrs X, how's little Nerv... Niv... your daughter today?"

Adair · 08/03/2010 08:34

WEll, I quite like it!
Ne-vay-ah. WHy not? All names are 'made up' at some point, no?

Keleece, not sure about. Kelis? Kelys? the eece just looks wrong to me.

Btw am also a teacher, but one who doesn't bat an eyelid at so-called unusual names. Maybe it's where I work but I never know where a name has come from. Lots of names seem strange but are perfectly acceptable in other countries. Takes all of 30 seconds to get used to Necati, Perver, Nali, Muse, Harry, Florian, Kayleigh, Deleisha, Ngan. Not that hard, really. I do get pissed off with judgemental teachers - if you judge a child based on their name, you are in the wrong profession IMVHO. Kacper- stupid parents huh? No, Polish. And for those who say 'ah, but if the parents are WHITE UK BRITISH they should only use WHITE UK BRITISH names', I say go and share your ridiculous narrow-minded views with the rest of the BNP.

Right, now should go and eat something

honeyapple · 08/03/2010 09:37

How about 'Hannah'... (that's my name) and it's great... you can spell it forwards or backwards and it is the same- so no bother there.

gagamama · 08/03/2010 09:43

I love the backwards spelling thing. My DCs are called Dog and Lived.

SheWillBeLoved · 08/03/2010 09:44

God, I instantly think of anti wrinkle cream whenever I hear this name. Heaven spelt backwards, honestly! What next? Legna? Susej? Susej like Sausage..! Stepping away now, had far too little sleep for silliness.

SheWillBeLoved · 08/03/2010 09:45

Gaga

nickelbabe · 08/03/2010 10:20

can only echo.

Heaven spelt backwards is Hell. no matter whether you "spell" it Nevaeh or not.
It has very negative connotations to anyone who has even an inkling of religious knowledge.

She could call her Helen, which sounds like hell, but means something nice.

or just call her Heaven fgs.

i would probably pronounce it "nev-eye-ah" which sounds too much like nirvana anyway.
but i guarantee most people would try to pronounce it Nivea or Never.

nickelbabe · 08/03/2010 10:22

oh, can you imagine the teasing "nevaeh, never, never, never,"

littlemissm · 08/03/2010 10:29

I know the names not everyones cup of tea & its a name that she likes the sound of just because the spelling is heaven spelt backwards has f all to do with it.Wot is a normal name? I'm glad not everyone likes the same names god how boring would that be. I like unuasalish names all my kids have them. I think my friend should go with it but maybe spell it differently maybe how it is pronounced. The other name is Kelis not spelt keleece that was my mistake she also has Elise for a name. But the actual question was how would you pronounce it.

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 08/03/2010 10:33

i would pronounce Kelis as kee-liss, but i think someone else said kill-leece was the correct way to say it.
or k'leese

Elise is nice: that's pronounced i'leesse

OtterInaSkoda · 08/03/2010 10:42

God it's awful. Sounds like the parents are into some kind of occult bollocks. I would assume that, tbh.

I love unusual names, and don't have a problem with ones that aren't obvious in their pronunciation. But Nevaeh? I'd pronounce it Nah-vay-ah btw.

Elise = El-eeze
Kelis = Kel-eese

AttilaTheMeerkat · 08/03/2010 11:12

Poor child won't thank the parents for being lumbered for life with a so called name like "nevaeh".

Its a jumble of letters and its not cute at all, its pure vanity on the parents' part.

Pronouncing it "Nayvayah" sounds way too much like "Nivea". Please tell this lady to have a complete rethink. Names are far more important than many people realise.

LevantineLass · 08/03/2010 11:14

We have one in our class, and it always makes me laugh. It's impossible to say unironically - like anyone over 30 trying to pronounce Dizzee Rascal. Why not just call her Heaven instead of The Reverse of Heaven, since you will spend your life saying "it's Heaven backwards". Or just call her Hell, why not!
