My friend is 31 weeeks with dd2 & has picked a name a lovely name but i said maybe she should re think the spelling as she might be forever telling people how to pronounce it. The name is Heaven spelt backwards Nevaeh it is to me looking at it it looks like Nevah but it is actually pronounced NEV A AH Would you look at the spelling & no how to pronounce it?

Never heard this before. But why would anyone want to spell heaven backwards?

grumpypants · 07/03/2010 18:02

How about nede? esidarap? legna? This is so much fun! A whole new world of baby names has just opened up for me [helpful emoticon] - evol?

tummytickler · 07/03/2010 18:04

Heaven backwards - Hell?

cookielove · 07/03/2010 18:12

How about Neva, a very pretty name pronounced Nee-vaa

catastrojb · 07/03/2010 18:23

How about Neve (like the actress?)? It's 'even spelled backwards, innit!

lifeas3plus1 · 07/03/2010 18:44

Why spell Heaven backwards?

Surely you might as well just name your child Hell

PortBlacksand · 07/03/2010 19:08

Niamh - Hmaih

It could work...

PortBlacksand · 07/03/2010 19:12

Sedah?

Muinomednap?

Onrefni?

Dlrowrednu?

FlumpetMum · 07/03/2010 19:32

Stupid name FFS! Call her heaven.

cookielove · 07/03/2010 19:33

hades

pandemonium

inferno

underworld

lufhgiled lla

LIZS · 07/03/2010 20:20

I'd think they didn't know how to spell Niamh properly. Poor child will be forever explaining (how sad her parents were !) and spelling out - hope they give her a sensible middle name as an option to use instead

onebatmother · 07/03/2010 20:30

Whatevah?

mathanxiety · 07/03/2010 20:45

Nev-AAA-ah.

This name should be banned.

venusonarockbun · 07/03/2010 20:49

Agree with banning this 'name' - it is ridiculous!

Donkeyswife · 07/03/2010 20:51

I have a fairly unusual name and one which is quite easy to mispronounce - my dad is from overseas and in his motherland this name is still fairly uncommon but still very pronouncable by all). Needless to say I have spent more effort than I would have liked in correcting people and explaining where my name comes from.

My kids have got straightforward names of which there is no chance for them to be mispronounced.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my name, but I would not put a child through having an even more unusual name than mine, namely Heaven backwards. Think of the child for goodness sake!

EVye · 07/03/2010 21:07

I first read this as Haven backwards

j0807bump · 07/03/2010 21:14

i would prob mis-pronounce as 'Never', never, ever...

PrincessBoo · 07/03/2010 21:39

Sounds like Nivea. Vile.

theyoungvisiter · 07/03/2010 21:47

Anyone else amused to note that this has made discussions of the day... only spelled wrong

Apparently MNHQ think that heaven spelled backwards is neaveh.

I think I can feel a song coming on...

[hums] Nevaeh, I'm in nevaeh, and my traeh beats so that I can hardly spell...
and I'd like to find some ssenippah as well...
but I can't work out whether neveah equals hell.

onebatmother · 07/03/2010 21:53

lolol tyv

mellifluouscauliflower · 07/03/2010 21:54

I think the message here is quite clear: Never Say Nevaeh Again..

ellesabe · 07/03/2010 21:58

I would pronouce it 'Nev-ay-ah'

theyoungvisiter · 07/03/2010 21:58

sadly I just spoiled my snobbery by spelling nevaeh wrong in my own song.

Oh well. I'll try to pretend I meant it like that and the whole thing is post-ironic. Or summat.

rachaelehardy · 07/03/2010 22:06

Working in a school, I would like to add ... Tell them, please don't!! Whats wrong with normal names? every foundation stage that arrives, we have one or two children that we haven't a clue how to say their names. The poor child will go through life constantly spelling it out for people. I can't understand the concept of spelling a word backwards for a name anyway?

duchesse · 07/03/2010 22:10

My daughter was once instructed by a teacher she didn't like to write a story about an evil fairy. She called the fairy Enilorac, made her wear far too much eye makeup and have an obsession with collecting shoes. It didn't take her teacher long to work out who Enilorac was (not very loosely) based on.

In fairness, my daughter was 8 at the time.

I agree with whoever said why on earth do people not just be brazen about it and call their child Heaven. It's not like people won't know or work it out the other way round, yet you condemn the person to a lifetime of spelling out her name and telling people how to pronounce it.
